Not every trip is going to be the trip of a lifetime. On our excursion to Las Coloradas, we weren’t prepared for any of it. So watch this video so you can see what we learned along the way. In addition to watching the video, we’re going to tell you a little more about it here. For the most part, we can easily find something to love about a new destination. This trip showed us that not every trip is worth taking. There’s a couple reasons why.
As beautiful as a pink lake is, there’s no direction on how to gain access to the lake, like a sign at the entrance, so when the “patrol” tells you to get off the sand hill next to the lake where you’re taking your pictures, and you don’t know where to go to get to the entry point, you’re left wandering around wondering what to do next. Of course, you can just stand next to the moat that surrounds the lake and take your pictures, but of course that same self-appointed “patrol'' is going to tell you not to.
If you happen to find the entrance, they’re charging an exorbitant fee of $300 pesos or $15 dollars per person to get in. This doesn’t include a “tour guide” which will cost extra or a bicycle to ride around it which costs a lot extra. And since you can’t do anything at the lake except walk around it taking pictures, it’s not like that money is paying for anything except for people to stand around collecting your money.
Well, what about grabbing some food after your costly visit? The few restaurants that surround the lake are way overpriced. We were lucky to find a family run place with delicious food and reasonable prices. Plus, they were the first people who talked to us in a friendly, welcoming way, as if they appreciated the few tourists that come to this out of the way town.
Overall, we won’t plan a return and can’t recommend anyone going before they know what they’re getting into. If you absolutely MUST have a picture of naturally pink water, make sure you’re carrying enough money to pay for it and know exactly where the entrance is. Might we suggest that your time could be best spent in any of the many other tourist locations on the Yucatan peninsula. And if you need pink water, most bars know how to make the Pink Flamingo cocktail.

Our first trips were local to our area, Bucks County, and limited to days we weren’t working full time jobs or being restricted by lock-downs. In November of 2020, an opportunity presented itself and we decided to take our travel trailer out of storage and travel full time across America.
