🇲🇿 Moz-S. Africa Lebombo Border: Intercape Bus from Maputo, Ugly Joburg & Uganda Airlines to Nairobi

Four African countries in 27 hours. A full array of travel from Maputo, Mozambique to Nairobi, Kenya transiting through Johannesburg, South Africa and Entebbe, Uganda.
The Mozambique-South Africa border crossing is easy enough, particularly when taking the Intercape Bus between the countries' capital cities. And fortunately, when arriving in Johannesburg, there is no need to exit the bus station as a path directs travelers onto the Gautrain for O.R. Tambo International Airport.
Johannesburg's Central Business District is not safe! The city is dangerous and is also crowded and dirty. Avoid this area and Johannesburg in general!
An overnight flight on Uganda Airlines to Entebbe and then a sunrise shuttle were quiet rides before arriving in Nairobi.
Watch until the end to determine why Matt chose this circuitous route.

No South Africans are in Joburg, its been hijacked by illegal immigrants, Thank goodness we're voting for the immigration restoration...unfortunately you dont know joburg, you just know cbd

Hi Sifi. Thank you for your comment and insight. You are correct that my Jo'berg experience was limited to the dangerous CBD (10 days) and illegal immigration is indeed a significant factor to the exploding crime rate. Of note, while filming this video from the bus, I did catch on camera the tail end of a carjacking but I did not want to put that in the film. Ideally the May 29 election will result in change for South Africa, including police reform and migration controls. If I am highly critical of Jo'burg, my week in Soweto was pleasantly surprising. Please enjoy this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aNbNgPsNTS8.htmlsi=iEHZ1bBmefDz2217

I wonder if you have actually been around Joburg.. otherwise, you can't really comment on its safety. I'm from Durban South Africa. First, Johannesburg is a very big city that mostly cannot be avoided. Also, it's so varied that some parts are 100% unsafe while elsewhere, no one has ever been mugged. It's the largest city on the continent with rich culture, massive wealth and prosperity. Being anywhere on the continent by yourself is generally unsafe In defence of Jozi 💔

Hi Siphamandia. Thank you for this extensive comment. It is appreciated and worthy of a detailed response. I did spend two weeks in Jo'burg, at the hostel in the Maboneng District. While the two or three blocks on Fox Street are improving, steps away on Main Street, Commissioners and on the other side of a large intersection, the CBD is crowded, dirty and unfortunately, very dangerous. Even while filming from the bus, we witnessed a carjacking, a not-so-unfamiliar occurance in Johannesburg. While I did not like Jo'burg (but the bookstores are excellent!), Cape Town and the coast of South Africa are significantly different in its safety. Or, at the least, not as overtly violent. Regarding other African capitals to my experience, Addis Ababa and Nairobi are dirty and crowded but not dangerous. Maputo, Mozambique, on the other hand, is reasonably quiet and orderly. You are correct that most visitors will pass through Jo'burg, either via Tombo or en route to Kruger. If there are places of interest in the city, on a budget, I was hard pressed to find them. Finally, Soweto and specifically the Orlando West district, including the Apartheid Museum, is worth the time for a backpacker or intrepid traveller to explore. I am glad a viewer challenged my critique of Johannesburg. Assuredly, out of 240 videos, this is one of the very few times when I had a harsh and widesweeping criticism of a city/area. You are more than welcome to observe other BoB films, including those from Soweto and Maputo.

I wonder why flights on Ugandan Airways are so empty? Mostly flights to Kenya through Kenya Airways are normally full when I travel to Nairobi

Hey Rasta. Thanks for posting your comment on BoB. I was surprised too as I can't ever recall being on such a quiet flight. While I planned on filming the aircraft, the emptiness added to the mystique of the flight and was in contrast to the other segments of this journey. For your interest, here's another video from rural Mozambique. Enjoy! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-r-d7GEqPGyQ.htmlsi=Hny9gLz3d6FqJ1jY

Good job, thank you for posting the video, I'm planning on taking the bus from Maputo to JoBrug so this is helpful. My other plan was to take the train from Maputo to Eswatini and then on to Joburg. Is there a reason why you didn't go to Eswatini? Just wondering if you learned something about Eswatini that turned you off on the idea of going there. Keep up the good work.
@bordersonbudgets
@bordersonbudgets Год назад
Hi NLR. Thank you for this elaborate comment. I did think about Eswatini, particularly on the return from Maputo via train. However, the logistics and the time commitment were reasons for the bus back to Jo'burg. Plus I already purchased the airfare. Please continue to enjoy other BoB films.

@@bordersonbudgets I have one more question please, when you went to Maputo did you get visa on arrival? Did you fly into Maputo and if you did, which airlines did you use? I'm asking because I asked the embassy and they said you need to check with the airlines, I then asked the airlines and they said you need to check with the embassy so I'm getting bounced around, please help, since you already this. thanks again.
@bordersonbudgets
@bordersonbudgets Год назад
@@NeverLostRoamer Hi NLR. At the Ponto D'Ouro border with South Africa, I obtained a visa on arrival. The process should have been simple, as I had all my paperwork. However I, and two Brits, were held back for several hours because we didn't pay a bribe, a gesture that was not explicitly stated by the border guards. A visa on arrival is $50 US or 45 Euros. A prearranged visa, if flying into Maputo, is $150 US.

Why are you calling my Jo’burg ugly
@bordersonbudgets
@bordersonbudgets 5 месяцев назад
Hi Figer. Respectfully, Jo'burg and the CBD is both ugly AND dangerous and much more so than the other larger African cities I visited in 2023. (Cape Town, Maputo and Nairobi.) However, I enjoyed Soweto and specifically the Orlando neighbourhood. Please enjoy this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aNbNgPsNTS8.html
