Santiago de los Caballeros de León or simply León, is a municipality and a city of the Republic of Nicaragua , head of the department of León , and is located approximately 90 kilometers northwest of Managua . It sits on the shores of the Pacific , with the two closest beaches 18 kilometers away: Poneloya and Las Peñitas. It was founded in 1524, by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba . The Las Peñitas spa was founded in 1959 by Dr. José Venancio Berríos Obregón, political leader of León.
León has been the intellectual headquarters of the nation, with a university founded in 1812, which is why it is known as " University City " or " Metropolitan City ." It is also an important agricultural and trade center of Nicaragua. Until the appointment of Managua as the capital of Nicaragua, León competed with Granada for said representativeness.
Geography
The city of León is located in the west of the country, it has an area of 820.2 km², it is located between the coordinates 12° 26′ 8″ north latitude and 86° 52′ 46″ west longitude, at an altitude of 86 m asl, Its limits are to the north with the municipalities of Quezalguaque and Telica , to the south with the Pacific Ocean , to the east with the municipalities of Larreynaga and La Paz Centro and to the west with the municipalities of Chichigalpa and Corinto .
