I visited Gdansk in Poland, went to the beach, drank some beer, ate some food and did the Lechia Gdańsk stadium tour.
Could I get everything in this video for cheaper than a UK train ticket? Watch until the end to find out!

I worked in Poland teaching English in 2012. Totally luck that year they hosted Euro 2012. All the train stations and infrastructure was like new in anticipation but the prices were so cheap. A 3 course meal was like £4 and a pint was £1 too. I stayed in Gliwice where WW2 kicked off and I went to many Piast Gliwice games. Now, Gornik Zabrze the local Derby team also play in the top polish league. They hate each other like Celtic and Rangers, I'm from Glasgow BTW... Now, the Gornik Zabrze stadium, kid you not, used to be called the Adolf Hitler stadium. Very tense game which I attended between them and might be worth catching. Poland is a great place to visit for the price still and my favourite place is Krakow and south of there is Zakopane. A beautiful region to see like a mini Swiss Alps with lots to do.

Might be to short notice but at the end of May try Krakow. Cracovia are at home Saturday 27th and Wisla Krakow are at home Sunday 28th. You need something called a Polish PESIL number to buy tickets. Maybe a Polish subscriber can explain what this is and how you can get the tickets for the games.

Gdańsk wasn't Prussia, Gdańsk was occupied by German Teutonic order, and the architecture you see in Gdansk is Dutch. Dutch were protestant (mostly Frisians) refugees who found asylum in Poland during inquisition. Greengate for example was designed by Reiner van Amsterdam as a residence for Polish king. There were also others, like Abraham van den Blocke, Antoni van Obberghen, Izaak van den Blocke, Hans Vredeman de Vries, Willem van der Meer,. None of them was German, all of them were fathers to the most monumental landmark buildings in Town. Oh, and you might ask why Gdańsk. Well, because they are Dutch, and they know how to deal with water, so in fact they were present in whole Northern Poland, and after all assimilated being called "Olender".

You are absolutely right. Besides, the city was almost completely destroyed during World War II. So what we see now was rebuilt after the war.
@marekkwapisiewicz2675
@marekkwapisiewicz2675 Год назад
Basically Gdansk was founded by Poles. In middle ages it was controlled by Hanza. Architecture of Gdansk is hanzeatic. That's why Gdansk reminds Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Wroclaw, Lübeck or Riga. Hanza was an international medieval corporation, to which people of many countries belonged, mostly Dutch, Germans and Poles. After the fall of Hanza, Gdansk was developed by Poland until partitions, when Gdansk was controlled by Prussia, which turned to Germany. In interwar period Gdansk was an independent state. In World War II Germans defended in Gdansk during Soviet offence and city was almost completely destroyed. After World War II people decided to rebuild main part of Old Town.

Actually, Gdansk ..... a historical land called Pomerania, Prussia refers to the pagan lands of the Baltic Prussians, while Pomerania, the strip of land from Gdansk( Danzig) to Szczecin( Stettin), was inhabited by Christian Slavs.Prussia was the land where Crusades were organized under the leadership of the Teutonic Order, at this point Pomerania had already been Christian lands for several hundred years

As well as the WWII history, it also has an important part in more recent Polish history as the birthplace of the Solidarity movement, set up in the early 80s and an important step towards ending Communism in the country. It's just a pity that fabulous-looking stadium won't be hosting top-flight football next season.

I think it's fantastic that you had a segment on the war - it's so important, especially when there'll be plenty of people watching alongside us who are maybe 10 or 12, or teenagers even, and don't know much about what happened, but will be able to come away with a deeper appreciation of what these people had to go through. That of course has a knock-on effect because you feel so much more gratitude for the life you have now. 🙂

Poland has a tragic history; the country ceased to exist in the 19th century and didn't reemerge until after WW1. The present border is markedly different from the borders of the resurrected Poland. Poland's largely flat terrain made the country vulnerable to invasion. Surprised you didn't sample any Polish vodka, Sam. The club that won the Poland’s top league this season, Rakow Czestochowa, play in a stadium whose capacity is similar to Ross County’s Victoria Park. Here you visit the stadium of Lechia Gdansk, with a capacity of over 40,000, home to a club who are relegated. In addition, another team with a 40,000+ capacity stadium, Slask Wrocław, might get relegated too. Can’t imagine something similar happening in Scotland anytime soon with a smaller team winning the league and the Old Firm both getting relegated!
@_r4x4
@_r4x4 Год назад
Lechia Gdańsk and Śląsk Wrocław may have quite a big stadium as they are from big cities, but these clubs are mid table at best. Also their stadiums are too big for them, because they have often less than half of tickets bought and it's rare to have 90% or more of tickets sold. It would be probably the same if someone would build huge stadium in Edinburgh. In theory it would sound ok seeing size of the city, but without club that is good enough it would look quite sad.

In the Middle Century Gdańsk was very rich and it was kinda European Hong Kong. I don't know if you know it but between 15 and 18 century Gdańsk was popular among Scotish setlers, merchants etc. It 16 century it was estimated that one-third of the citizens were Scots. There is one train station called Nowa Szkocja (New Scotland). For instance an English word spruce is from that area. British around 17 century we're buying lots of timber from that area and they found new type of timber- a tree that they did not know. They asked locals what kind of wood it is and locals said in Polish 'Z Prus'. Which means from Prussia. They wrote what they heard and for them Z Prus sounded like Spruce. Just a story....

I've once stayed in Gdańsk near the big gate you've been to (the touristy place) in a shared hostel room for like 30zł (like 6 pounds), so yeah, you could probably get like 30 quid less just for the stay if you'd be fine with a shared room or just found something cheaper. 40 pounds is quite a lot I would say.

Nice stadium. I've been there in 2021. But the last time they had only Polish guides. It was still decorated that time from the Euro League final between Villarreal and Man Utd.

15:29 As a German, I'm quite amused about the fact that a huge signed Wolfsburg flag is hanging there right next to clubs such as Barcelona or Juventus. Wolfsburg definitely doesn't belong to the few German clubs that spread some kind of attraction when it comes to the history of European football.

In some period Wolfsburg recorded good results, he was on a visit to Gdansk and the flag is a souvenir from the match.

You cannot say “if I can go to Europe”, when you’re already in Europe. Great video. UK trains are insanely expensive. It’s a disgrace… the thing you refer to as a cathedral is in fact a town hall.
