hmm. not to say that every food originates in Singapore (except Chicken Rice and Bak Kut Teh=) This is Teochew food that can be found in Singapore. (Teochew is a dialect grp in Southern China that migrates to SEA incl Thailand, Vietnam, etc) but when generations grew up in different places, those small dishes also adapt. In Singapore some dishes now come prepared with chilli and is popular, like the sambal sotong. I'm Teochew. during 80s when Singaporeans are generally not as rich, my family always have this for lunch, just the white porridge with some pickled lettuce, fermented bean curd, and viola, another meal settled. Anyways, i find your videos are sincere and well prepared, so that y i just clicked the subscribed button!

I hope people read through the comments for this video and can see you describe, as someone who is Teochew, how this dish is part of your background and history, as well how you would eat it. I was most impressed on eating the pickled vegetables with the porridge for the first time, and I’m glad to hear that this would be a traditional accompaniment. I always describe the dishes as being Singaporean because I’m eating them in Singapore, and as you mention the food does change slightly as it travels. I would love to try this in the Teochew homeland in Southern China! Thanks for sharing your experience and thanks for the subscribe!

I'm Singaporean Teochew Chinese and I'm so happy that you're introducing Teochew porridge to your viewers. Few foreigners know of it and even fewer have tried it. I love Teochew porridge. It's my comfort food. 🙂 There are no real rules on how to eat it. Just eat it anyway you like. I like to put a bit of the side dish in a spoon of porridge and eat it. Btw, the porridge water is valued by the Teochews cos we believe that it is nutritious. You can actually ask for extra porridge water for free at most stores.

The question is: do I ask for extra porridge water or do I ask for a bigger bowl of porridge? It does taste good! Are there any other side dishes you recommend? Thanks for watching!

@@MakkosMakanAdventure If you ask for a bigger bowl of porridge, you'll probably have to pay for it. But porridge water, without the grains of rice, is usually free. 🙂 I personally like to eat it with salted vegetables and spicy lala (clams). I often select the steam eggs too, if they have it. Sometimes I'll pick the crispy mei ren yu (which is a crispy fish but I don't know the name in English). Steam fish is in general one of the more expensive dishes so if you want to order it, just be aware of that. I like to eat it with steam fish too but will often only eat it if I'm sharing with someone. 🙂 Sometimes I'll order the cai poh egg omelette too. And then random other things that I feel like having on that day. 🙂

Thanks for the advice! The crispy fish sounds nice, and an egg would also be good!

I'm Cantonese and if we cook lunch at home, it's always Teochew porridge because it's suitable for our hot weather. We just need to cook the rice soup (糜) and served it with canned food such as braised peanuts, preserved vegetables (菜心), spicy pork cubes (五香肉丁), as well as salted eggs, steamed fish and stir-fry bean sprouts.

Yes, Teochew porridge is comfort food especially when it's been raining and the weather is cooler. You eat it the way I would have done, some dish with a spoonful of porridge. The plain porridge kind of balance it up with the more robust favors of the dishes.

But as a non native, I don’t notice it being cooler! Next time I am in Europe during the winter, I need to try and find a place selling porridge. Let’s see if it warms me up! I think it will! But you are right, so many other dishes which the porridge carries. I need to try some of the other ones!

Perhaps you should look into getting a wireless clip-on mic to better capture your audio... 😅😊 Thanks for introducing the various food in SG, the multi food culture here... Good food does not need to be expensive, they can be cheap too. Some of the food you had, most tourists to SG may not had them before 😊

I usually asked for gravy in the porridge
@MakkosMakanAdventure
@MakkosMakanAdventure Месяц назад
Do I just ask for gravy or is there a particular gravy I need to ask for?
@MakkosMakanAdventure
@MakkosMakanAdventure Месяц назад
And is that only gravy for Teochew Porridge or gravy for all types of porridge?
@NEAAFFAIRS
@NEAAFFAIRS Месяц назад
You asked for it when you order. It's a dark soy based gravy. Ask for the gravy to be poured into the porridge. I don't know the English word for it. But in Hokkien, it's "Lol zhap " or lor chap. Those found in braised pork

@MakkosMakanAdventure for all kind of porridge even the kind served at economic rice stall. The porridge is plain so that give it more flavor

I know that the sound is not the best. I have experimented with some microphones but they fail to capture the atmosphere in the hawker and coffee shop. I’m working on it!
