🇺🇸 Cobra Attempt by F-18 Super Hornet " Comment what you think? "

0:52 for the cobra attempt. The F-18 Super Hornet can pull off some mind blowing manoeuvres now with the new computer flight control updates. The pilot almost pulled off the famous cobra manoeuvre, where the pilot pulls the aircraft right back over on itself and then levels it back out again.

You can see by the exhaust that he was sliding there. And the nose appeared to hit 90° so that counts as a cobra as far as I'm concerned.

It hit 90 degrees, but he was flying upwards at this moment. Also that was very slow, cobra should be a fast maneuver, like in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4yXP6uETPs4.html

No, look at the exhaust. Every Cobra has some upward movement but it's mostly a tail slide, which this Hornet accomplished. Also, something people don't often realize is that American pilots perform maneuvers like this as slowly as possible. The longer you maintain the maneuver, the more difficult it is to control the aircraft. The fact that the Raptor can stay in this particular maneuver for nearly five seconds at a time and then carry on like it was nothing is impressive, where as the Russian pilots tend to complete the maneuver as fast as possible to avoid losing control.

@@crevis12 F-35 is perfectly fast for it's class, it can supercruise, according to pilots it's one of the best dogfighters rivaling the F-16 (which doesn't even matter since this plane would kill them in BVR combat before then), and $85 million is pretty cheap considering you need less airframes and that it's a stealth aircraft. It's cost per hour is pretty impressive for a stealth aircraft as well. If you want your country to have worse A2A air craft, have to buy more air frames and ultimately end up with outdated aircraft that's up to you lol. @F A L K E N he was still climbing tho. There shouldn't be altitude gain while doing cobra.
@83zillafan
@83zillafan Год назад
@@vysakhvalsaraj882 There will always be an increase in altitude no matter how minute or significant when performing the "cobra". Even the Russians and Swedes demonstrate this. Yes, the intention in a cobra is to decelerate with minimal altitude compromise but gaining altitude will always be an inevitable byproduct of the physics involved performing that maneuver. During the manuever; the airframe itself not only turns into a giant speedbrake, but also a giant lifting surface like an aircraft's trailing edge flaps. It will only be after a certain angle does this effect cease and the airflow seperates. So somewhere early in performing the maneuver you will always gain some altitude. If you watch the exhaust trail behind this f/a-18 during the maneuver you can see theres sufficient forward momentum while at a 90+ degree angle to count this as a true cobra however, yes, perhaps not as dramatic as a Suhkoi SU-27 / 35 Flanker's cobra, nonetheless this does not discount this as a true cobra maneuver as it follows all definition.

A decent effort but if you look at the manouver being performed in an Su-27 it is not about making a nose-lift but about swinging the rear down. The Su-27 pilot can swing the plane past the vertical, to a 120 degree angle (nose pointing slightly backwards) while keeping a symmetrical airflow and not losing directional control. Thus the pilot rapidly bleeds off an awful lot of airspeed while not gaining significantly in altitude. The F-18 rotates around the forward part of the fuselage to an angle of, at best 50 degrees by my estimate, resulting in a fast climb rather than bleeding off speed. Credit to the pilot for a good effort in a plane definitely not designed to be able to do the cobra.

that was pretty close to the cobra, however it did not result in the desired effect. the F/A-18 didn't lose that much speed, and was unable to drop the nose fast enough for a kill. this "Half-Cobra" maneuver could be used to get an enemy aircraft off your tail, but judging by how slowly the nose came down afterward (not to mention the altitude gained during the maneuver), a following kill would be unlikely. the cobra maneuver can be replicated to close effect on the Hornet, however other aircraft that were designed for supermaneuvrability are of course more capable in this position. If you are here from the newly released Top Gun trailer, it is likely that the maneuver that is seen is exaggerated, however the Hornet is otherwise an excellent aircraft.
@SupernovaSpence

The cobra maneuver is just plain deadly to try and "get someone off your tail." It causes loss of energy maneuverability as well as reduces pitch rates. The cobra is an aggressive maneuver intended to take a "pop shot." Ie, to fire a missile at a target that is not on the flight path of the aircraft performing the maneuver. Very similar to launching a missile with a high off boresight system. Edit: spelling

Not at all a Cobra. Nose pitch has to attain 90+ from direction of travel, that's just a hard pull that any aircraft can do to dump speed, but I guarantee trying to pull that shit at low speed would drop that Tomcat out of the sky. This is before we even get into how touchy the TF-30 powerplant was, especially concerning intake air flow changes. A whole lot of NATOPS restrictions across all variants of the platform were born from that. Some lifted with the F110s. Tbf the Super here doesn't really do a cobra either, but he's initiating at a way slower speed than Grumman's test pilot (I think he was their Chief TP at the time).

Extremely close but for it to be the true Pukachev the tail of the plane has to slip beneath and in front of the tip of the nose, then the pilot pours on the afterburners, kicks the elevators down to drop the nose to level the aircraft and continue straight. I'm not quite seeing that, here..very close, though. I didn't know the F-18 had that capability - impressive.
@vladimirnesic6778
@vladimirnesic6778 Год назад
You can see that every time he gets to 30 degrees he immediately starts to recover from the maneuver. Or it continues in a full loop. If he tried to do what the actual cobra maneuver requires, which is to reach 120 degrees, he would lose control long before that, and it is a big question whether he would be able to recover from the maneuver and regain control. This is simply a matter of aerodynamics. Classic wing construction simply doesn't allow something like this.

Ahhh yes, and that maneuver (high AoA Pitchup/Deceleration) was performed by test pilots in the early F-14A Tomcat nearly a decade before the SU-27 existed. Before the F-14, this was done with the SAAB Draken. The reason the F-14 NATOPS generally limited the AoA on the F-14 is because the PW TF30-P412/414 engines were very sensitive to compressor stalls at significant AoA and Yaw angles. With the F- 14B/D GE F110 engines, the limitation was more or less removed.

Was AE in the Navy 75-79 Lemoore CA. The A/F-18 was just coming out as i was getting out, they had a demonstration on operations side that was impressive, but he had slick wings. Another comment i saw mentioned they had never seen one do acrobatics while loaded with missles, me either. That had to play hell with his airflow over the surfaces of the bird, but it seemed that he greased each manuever with ease. Ive got to think a lot of it was that (Aviator), nut you got to have a agile bird to work with. The old A-7's i worked on couldn't do that kind of flying. It could bring a butt load of bombs to the target at sub-sonic speed, but not that. The A/F-18 has been in service now for about 40 years. Never heard a lot of bragging about it, but never heard complaints about it which sometimes is the best compliment one can get. Beautiful bird and to make those moves with armament loaded on it the way was, ok 2 thumbs up and a heck yes.. Go Navy.....
