I assumed that for a long time, especially since it wasn't rare in Europe to only get a few episodes of a successful series (like Final Fantasy) in addition to NES release being easily 2 to 3 years late (for example, you might have heard of that rather niche game, Super Mario Bros 3? Released in 1988 in Japan. In Europe? 1991) and it was then easy to assume that Nintendo decided to drop Megaman 7 to 9 to directly go on 10 on the SNES since they sped up the European release to squash Sega ; inceidentally, this is why Europe (thankfully! ;3 ) got the Super Famicom shell, since Nintendo could barely cope with the demand for US SNES, but had extra production available on the SuFami lines, so they used that extra capacity for European SNES.

"American's can't pronounce 'Laura'"??? My entire youth there was a girl in my neighborhood named Laura. We were the same age and attended the same school and church, so there were several opportunities for her name to be mentioned. I think there were a few other Lauras at school too. If that wasn't enough exposure to "how to pronounce Laura," Laura Ingalls was essentially the main character on "Little House on the Prairie" which ran from 1974 to 1983 then re-ran extensively throughout the '80s and maybe even into the early '90s. When Tomb Raider first came out, I at first thought it was "Laura Croft," then when I realized there was no U in her name, I somehow knew it didn't rhyme with Sarah and wondered where the hell "Lah-ruh" came from.

-1) If I was the executive, I would have done that. -3) If I was the executive, I would have done that. Larry forgets that these games were soldf in toy stores, and were often ordered out of catalogues without pictures or explanations for what they contained. If I owned a toy store in the US in the nineties, and I had to restock the shelves for video games, I would NOT have picked up these games with their original names. First of all, 1 I would not order because of the general "think of the children" attitude. You can argue that the whole attitude was stupid, but it WAS prevalent, and any store owner would have to keep it in mind. 3, it seems silly to assume it's based on the show...when you have box art to look at. But if you are picking it from a list in a catalogue, and it says "Another World - Platformer" and that is ALL, and it is released at a time when EVERYTHING gets a platforming game; you're damn right I'll be assuming it is a spin-off an avoiding it. In short, 1 and 3 were not stupid moves at all, but looks stupid because we have the wrong perspective.
@charlesalexander560
@charlesalexander560 4 года назад
Conversely it can be said just because something is done en masse doesn't make it the right move, and in fact the largest selling chains and franchises of video games have tended to be the ones thinking specifically outside of the frame of mind your argument presents. For instance Grand Theft Auto, Street Fighter, Dead or Alive, when you think about it even games that seem child friendly and have sold well have overt adult themes and undertones to them, and in a world where the most popular game type is based on shooting someone in the face, I think your argument here is sort of a fallacy in that it excuses poorly made decisions because "everyone was doing it" and that basic concept itself has been proven flawed already to the point that it is often used as a negative and not a positive. IE. "If all your friends were jumping off a bridge". You can't build a solid argument on flawed foundations.
@nidhoggstrike
@nidhoggstrike 4 года назад
Like I said, moral panic was a big thing when it came to video games. Even if you thought it was stupid, you had to account for it. You did not want Joe Lieberman to show your game to a shocked audience. Of course, in hindsight, you really DID want that. As Mortal Kombat and Night Trap can both testify, the moral panic really did them a lot of good. Buuuut...most economic actors will always do a version of "everyone was doing it". The guy who game up with Klash Ball probably got a good bonus that year. Just as much as you can't build a solid argument on flawed foundations, you can't assume that business men in the early nineties didn't follow the conventional wisdom of the time. Because you are looking at it from the hindsight of today. From our vantage point it sure looks like taking risks was a brilliant move, but there was no way they could have known.
@charlesalexander560
@charlesalexander560 4 года назад
@@nidhoggstrike except the ones who took risks did know, due to marketing, ad research, demographic studying, and most inportant understanding that innovation defines technology for its abilities not it's uses. By putting out games that set against those norms based on marketing and ad research they had done, they came to the conclusion that puahing the system to it's limits to make it do rhinga never before done was more marketable than a 50th cookie monster amiiga game. I was alive during the back end of these times so yes, i actually do know first hand and not just from speculation of how their perspective was, i actively watched what I am describing happen. So, I was the producer on Wipeout2097 (featured in video) ... most of the comments below show that "renaming for Americans" was/is a thing. At the time we were making this game the film "The Madness of King George" had just come out (being based on the play "The Madness of King George III" ... but it was renamed to avoid the confusion of it being the 3rd film in the series. With hindsight, I wish we'd called the European version Wipeout XL too ... it was a much better name than 2097 (for those who care, the reason it wasn't called Wipeout 2 was because it was intended to just be a "tracks disk" style update rather than a full sequel ... it was just we managed to squeeze in a shed load of other features too that most people consider it a sequel)
@Larry
@Larry 4 года назад
Hey Andy, How on Earth did you find this video? But it's great to see you Sir!!! I personally hate the concept of giving a non-annual releases a year in the title, as it immeaditly makes them irrelevant after twelve months. Look at all those Simulator games on steam. Can I ask was it always going to be a standalone release? it wasn't going to be an add-on disc like Grand Theft Auto London, where you need the original to play, even if it's just checking the game for ownership than using the code. But would love a chinwag sometime if you're ever up for it :)

@@Larry Didn't spot the second two parts of your question then. It was always going to be a "standalone" release. (How I remember it is ...) the success of Wipeout 1 was a bit of a surprise to Psygnosis as such there was no immediate plan for a sequel. In addition, 90% of the Wipeout 1 development team left after the game released, meaning that Psygnosis didn't have a team ready and able to go to make a sequel even if they had it planned. As such, when it was apparent they needed one, they decided to keep it simple - just make new tracks, shove it in the old game, release it as an "extension" rather than a sequel. But as well as the artists, we had 3 programmers and 6 months ... you can do a lot with 3 programmers in 6 months (particularly when one of them is the unfeasibly talented Chris Roberts (not the Wing Commander guy, but ...) who went on to do amazing work on Colony Wars and others) . So by the time we had the 8 new tracks, we'd also added new weapons, upped the max number of vehicles from 8 to 15, added a new speed class and a bunch of other stuff. Hence it being regarded as a sequel ... it was an almost an accidental sequel if you like. Happy to have a chat ... hit me up on linked in (there aren't many with my name!)

That Wipeout 2097 anecdote reminded me that around the time Super Mario 64 was released (I was 9 at the time) I thought there were actually 64 Mario platformer games. However though, this was helpled by the fact that I live in a NES pirate releases country (Argentina) and there were multiple hacks featuring Mario, pretending to be sequels and I knew they got to at least the 14th sequel. I thought these sequels were real, even though in some cases I knew which games were they hacking. And after seeing Mario 64 I thought there were actually many more Mario games I didn't know of. In fact in that same year (1996) is when my mom brought me "Mario 14" (a hack of Japanese Famicom's "Kid Niki 3") from a trip to Poland (seems that country is a NES pirtate territory too). Up to that point that was the higher Mario number I knew on the NES. Later with the internet I learned it stopped at "Mario 16" (A Joe and Mack hack) Anyway, 64 games still seems more feasible than 2097, heh heh

The funniest part about the name change to me is I'm in the US and I've never heard anyone pronounce her name as Lara. Only as Laura. And I didn't even know it was supposed to be Lara until the first time Larry brought up that piece of trivia lol

Also a US TV Show from the 1960s The Dick Van Dyke Show had a character named Laura. I had a few classmates in Elementary School named Laura. The Name Laura is a very common name in the US unlike Lara.

Curiously, something I encounter a lot is people from the USA trying to reduce any kind of discussion into a simple choice between 2 options, even when it is blatantly obvious that is going to ignore multiple very valid alternatives, and much more so than people from many other countries. Simplifying to the point of stupidity, and consequently giving the impression of 'stupid' ? Yes absolutely.

The Lara-Laura story sounds like a big misunderstanding. I find it much more plausible if an American had said: "can't we call her Laura?", and that story got picked up incorrectly. That country is filled with Laura's!

The idea that they didn't want it confused with a TV show named "Another World" is exceptionally idiotic considering that they changed it to have the same name as another popular show, one that would be more recognized by their target demographic than "Another World." In fact, when I was a kid and first heard about "Out of This World" I genuinely first thought it was based off of the show of the same name. Of course, seeing any image of the game or its box art instantly told me that it wasn't tied in with the show, but still, it is rather absurd that they created the very same issue they thought they were avoiding.

Because Lara is such an uncommon named that people reflexively say Laura instead, that and her name has been Laura for 10 years. Hard to understand a established character is the exact same person but just a slightly different name.

@@OmniscientWarrior In most American accents they're going to sound fairly similar unless you're trying to differentiate them. "Laura" is somewhere between "lora" and "lara" I would say.

I never even realized that Lara and Laura are supposed to have dedicated different pronunciations until watching this video. At most I just vaguely chalked it up to different people sounding different, to the extent I consciously acknowledged the slight difference at all. With that being said, apparently, I've been calling her Laura all along now that I think about it.

I don't think I've ever met a Lara, but I've known plenty of Lauras. It's possible the studio behind the soap Another World thought (or at least claimed) that people would buy the game thinking it was tied to the soap, but they wouldn't get any of the money. As if anyone in America would buy a game tied to a soap opera. And there are actually Americans who think Trump is the bad guy. They think Trump is more racist than Biden, who actually spoke at the funeral of the leader of the clan. So, yeah, some of us over here are kind of stupid.
