Wow, Ken! You've made my decison EASY!! As one who owns the stellar Fujinon XF90 f/2, you've answered my question on Sharpness, and I too, was surprised, not so much that it's sharper than the 90 (which was the sharpest lens I've ever used in 35 years in photography), but by how much! Also, that the 80 is twice as fast AF surprises me, since the Quad motors of the 90 make it quite fast as well...though AF speed isn't as critical a factor for my style of photography. I think I need to sell my 90 and the 60 Macro! Thanks for this great review, Ken!
Hey Ken, no surprise, but you're right yet again...this Fujinon XF80mm Macro is absolutely "3-Dimensional" crazy Sharp! I realize that some folks say that sharpness isn't everything, and I agree...Except for Macro lenses of course! And BTW, I sold my also stellar XF90 to help fund this lens, and I don't know how you were testing it, but my copy (the 90) was pretty darn fast to AF, with those Quad Linear motors like the XF80. Plus, before acquiring the XF80, I thought that the 90 was the sharpest lens I've ever used in 35+ years in photography, but man, I'm glad you also concur with me that this XF80 beats even that lens. Simply amazing, and it reinforces why I went with the Fujifilm X-System. Now, I can't wait for the pending XT-3, with an updated sensor and engine...Can't wait to see the magic created with that sensor plus this awesome XF80! And when you mentioned "nothing short of a $12K Contax Macro", I bet many folks would love to see that comparison!
I just got this lens and was freaked out by that clunking as you turn the lens. My question: will this affect the durability over time? It seems like with the parts inside banging around loose, it will eventually break down.
The sound it makes is beutiful. I have got some great shots of my dog using this lens. The OIS makes it so versitial, I am more of a handheld shooter so the OIS is so handy. It pretty much lives on my X-T1.
Like your Fuji reviews, even when WAY out of my price range. I settled for the 60mm 2.4 - but for Christmas which means I haven't had a crack at it yet. My go-to Fuji lens, oddly (and unexpected) is the 55-200. Can be a tad slow on focusing but stabilization is awesome.
However, I think 80mm F2.8 is a more versatile lens since it could handle portrait, macro and also sometimes landscape with OIS and new focus technique built in. What do you think? Thanks!
Hi Ken, thanks for your video. I just purchased the 80 mm Fujifilm lens, F2.8 and I have that mounted on my Fujifilm XT-20. I am new to macro photography and I have a question. It seems like whenever I am shooting in auto mode the aperture is always at F2.8. There is a very shallow depth of field, hence things were out of focus, foreground -background. Do you recommend using a tripod almost exclusively to gain an approximate three stops? I can go to manual focus and a slower shutter speed, hence maybe going to F8 or F 11 to pick up an additional depth of field? thank you very much, Dennis
I really want to try this lens now. How well would it work with some additional extension tubes? Would it retain it's sharpness or would I start getting aberrations?
Hi Ken! Huge fan of your videos and I have to say that I bought the 16mm f/1.4 based on your recommendation :) Couldn’t be happier, so thank you! Odd question: If I were to choose between the 80mm or the 50-140mm as my next lens, which would you recommend I get first?
Theoria Apophasis Thank you! For the time being, I’m doing wedding photography, portraits, street and some video work here and there. I’m a sucker for primes (got the 16, 23 and 35 f/2, and the 56), so the 80 caught my eye, but as you’ve said, the 50-140 is key for versatility. Thanks again! :)
Ken, thanks for the review, awesome!!! Question though: It looks to be rather big, even on X-T2 with grip, so how do YOU like it? Is it too big for the camera or not?
have not seen any good reviewes on the 80mm macro lens combined with the 1.4x converter for macro photography. How is it? Is it worth it, or can you do without it?
I do have a question. I bought this lens along with the teleconverter. You keep mentioning using a halfway press of the shutter release. What would be the difference if you use "back button focus"?
Hi Ken and all. Can any of the owners of this lens share their experience with its tracking auto focus performance (paired with a XT2)? I thought buying the 90mm for shooting my 3 year old (the 56mm is too slow to track her), but think that this one is a "better package"... Just want to make sure the continuous focus (especially for little kids) will not be disappointing.. Thanks!
I purchased this lens used, the clicks on the aperture ring do not feel as pronounce or with the same resistance as on my other Fuji lenses, is that the way it’s supposed to be or is the ring just worn out.
Hi Ken! Is there any macro lighting solution to use along with this lens and the X-T2? I bought this lens and want some ring light or macro flash to use with it. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with us!
Would love to know the answer for this I can focus at 10cm (3.9 inch) instead of 25cm (9.8 inch)?? Is this bad or a bonus? :) It's bad if you just achieve 1:1 magnification at 10cm (3.9 inch) It's good if you achieve 1:1 magnification at 25cm (9.8 inch) and at 10cm (3.9 inch) you're increasing that magnification
hey man love your video! just got this lens, and using it on my XT-2, but i can't seem to manual focus despite switching the front knob to 'M'. do you happen to know what im doing wrong?
Hi Ken! I LOVE your channel! I’m searching to have a particular question answered but I keep coming up short wherever I look. I own both Sony A7RIV and just picked up a Fuji XT4. I’ve heard amazing things from both you and community on the Fuji 80mm macro and I’m wondering how it would compare to the Sony 90mm 2.8 macro. I’ve been using the Sony for years but now that I’m dipping my toes in the Fuji water I’m wondering how it would compare to the Sony 90mm. Thank you in advance!
Well I’m not Ken but obviously the 80mm is more of a 120mm on full frame. I own the 80mm and to me it’s really sharp. I suggest you go to Flickr and you can do a search for picture taken by each lens and compare.
Would you recommend the 80mm over an adapted Tokina 100mm 2.8, given the drastic price difference? I'm in Canada, and after taxes the Fuji comes in at > 3X the cost of the adapted Tokina ($1800 vs $550). I was looking forward to the Fuji macro and it sounds like a great lens ... but that price point is a hard pill to swallow.
@@KenTheoriaApophasis How can you pick the two lenses as one over the other when they're totally different types of lenses for different applications But... I will say; I'm wanting them both now. Thanks a lot... I found the 80MM for $850 used. Should I...?
Hi, I have been following you and take every word of yours as a sincere friend would advice me .got the 80 mm and have been trying it for last few days but only a particular part of the subject comes out sharp and rest is hazy or bokeh as you call it .what settings do I need for the whole subject to be sharp and the background should be bokeh.please suggest . I tried to keep auto for all like focus ,shutter speed ,iso but only small portion is sharp while the rest of butterfly is hazy even when I try manual focus
This is called having a shallow depth of field. This is normal for macro lenses the trick is to get your subject into that small area that is in focus and take the shot. You can also increase the aperture to increase the amount of what you shoot will appear in that space. So if you shoot at 2.8 the area will be very small, if you shoot at F5.6 more of the area will be in focus and visible. You can also use focus stacking to take lots of shots with different parts of the subject are in focus and then merge all the pictures together. Hope that helps
no man, It's a close up filter and it's made in Japan :) works really well with zoom/teles I experimented when I had a panasonic 100-300mm and it was really good and great magnification. So, as I don't have any zoom from Fuji I was curious with that combination, I thought you have those filters. flic.kr/p/Garruy flic.kr/p/AfwvyS
Got a question for you Mr. "God of Macro", what is the best lighting option for Macro photography in the Fuji world? Ring Flash, Ring LED, 3 Flash setup like the nikon R1C1 or your great invention. Let me know! p.s. Donation on it's way :)
which one of my inventions? HOW SMALL macro, tiny macro my fiber optic is best..... otherwise ring flash is generally best. however lighting is also subjective to the comp you wanna make
Easy, THIS is an 80mm lens and the 16mm is only 16mm. What kind of a stupid fucking question is this? How do you even THINK to compare or ask to compare a 16mm to an 80mm? Why?
throughsoul have you ever shot the 16 up close? It’s not 1:1 but it has magnificent fov. I have both lenses. They are both incredible. The 16 has glued itself to the body. That being said I don’t consider the question by when Imfree unreasonable, especially if you aren’t focused in as close as you can with the 80
I don't know how many times I read a review where the buyer said they returned the lens because it makes a clunking noise. IDIOTS!!! Thanks for the review. This will be my next lens.
Ken I've been craving for this lens for some time but price over here is about 25% higher so what I've been doing is using the 50mm f2 followed by a MCEX 11 extension tube and finally the XF 1.4 teleconverter. This rig as been working great and since th 50mm is very sharp my images have been great... have you ever tried this? It's a 70mm 2.8... flic.kr/p/23N3Dfp
Sadly my mcex, both of them are the cheapests I could find and sometimes they make bad contact with other lenses .. but with this combo is even worse I can not turn on the camera in conditions ..I will buy one from JJC maybe .. AHAHHAHA
I send for the JJC extensions, very cool in a nice package. I prefer to use my 16-55@55 and with the 1.4x + mcex11 I can take a photo of 40mm in a metric scale. I belive the 80 mm macro can photograf the intery size of the sensor, maybe 20mm so I think with this combo I can get 1:2 magnification....? not bad...
Finally I have some decent tubes and I use them both need to make more experiences. You have Facebook. Let's talk better. Thanks. facebook.com/armeniobaraopassos.cavaco
hey ken! do you ever wear a watch? or do you watch horology channels on youtube? i always thought you were a crazy youtuber but then i came across archieluxury (aka paul pluta) and compared to this guy you are definitly not the angriest person on youtube :D you should check his channel out if u havent already ;)
With all due respect, with having your channel for so many years, I am baffled how have you not yet noticed that everything that you show on your iMac (including the picture samples) WE CAN NOT SEE! what’s even more baffling is that no one says anything. As many cameras as you have, you should have one of them pointed directly to the monitor and any time you want to show us something, you can use the footage of the dedicated monitor camera so we can see all the beautiful images or whatever it is your showing on that monitor. Don’t be lazy! You wanna be professional? Be one. Thank you
I am a x-t2 user, mostly do insect photography and so far I used laowa 60mm. I am thinking of investing into a new lens. Is Fujifilm 80mm best lens for insect macro photography or are there some alternatives? stuff that I do- and would like to bring a step further: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UulI6p2i7pM.html
oh.. i figured out all the answers during this video. :) thanks. amazing video and super useful images on flickr. i had no idea it also makes such good looking portrait and landscape photos
