Mask Service Unit 1 is one of 3 staffed units. Each MSU is staffed by 1 Full time Firefighter. Daily each MSU Truck splits the city up to drop of cylinders to about 70 Depot Stations. The FDNY uses Scott 4.5 positive pressure masks in 60, 45, 30 and 15 minute versions... Each Depot holds about 40 bottles. Daily from 0830 to 1400 they are exchanging used cylinders and replacing them at the Depots. MSUs are assigned on 3rd Alarms, 2nd Alarm 10-77s, 10-76 Commercial High Rise Fires and may be special called citywide and may be special called to fill a depot as some areas of the city can have 3 fires in one day. Depot Stations are so if a Company is out of bottles they go to Depot to get new bottles. Mask Service Division is in charge by a Battalion Chief also known as Car 12M. Each Tour gets assigned a Officer & 3 Firefighters. The 3 Firefighters will be on the Trucks and the officer is at the desk to answer phone and to see who needs bottles and masks. During the day shift anywhere from 6-10 light duty firefighters work in the Mask Service Division to help fill bottles. Not just the bottles that are coming back from the trucks but they also have to fill bottles that are used at The Rock which is the FDNY Training Academy. They have the probies, rescue, hazmat schools. They have companies that train at the academy daily. In the same building they have 7 employees that work for Scott that work on issues with Masks and Cylinders. Cylinders are only good for 15 years and they have to be inspected every 3-5 years
The Mask Service Division utilizes 3 Sprinter Vans 2 of them have the capability to hold air cylinders. The white sprinter van can hold up to 130 bottles. The red one under 80. The 3rd one is empty so if they have to pick up masks and packs or drop them off. Each Battalion and Division have extra Masks and Packs. The White Sprinter Van is usually used for Manhattan as it’s easier then using a Big Truck.
Basically after a Fire companies in the battalion go to the Depot to exchange cylinders.
For Response to scenes basically if MSU 1 was doing depots in Queens then he would take any fires or incidents in queens.
Basically 1 Depot for Each Battalion a couple have (2)

I know that and the special ops equipment always fascinate me. The two skid loaders or the loader back hoe or fuel truck… how are they transported to a scene and whom man’s them. Just amazing
@SkylerFire

They can be transported via trailers. Members of SOC man them.

The local VFDs put their bottle filling systems to work this afternoon when our neighbors house burnt to the ground. I can honestly say that as much as I find it interesting to watch the VFDs in action, this is one time I could have gone without seeing it.

Skyler, Life needs food, water & air! The public may know that firefighters need air to breath in a burning building. But as you said Hazmat, training of all types, non breathable air for tools & O2 for EMS! It's all air!!! Did FDNY ever have a mobile cascade for filling bottles on scene? Why is the Sprinter & some support rigs White? Save money? Thanks for the great start to the Labor Day Weekend! 👍👍👍
@SkylerFire
@SkylerFire 11 месяцев назад
I don’t recall a mobile cascade unit. Usually when they are white they where a quick buy or a lease. Thanks same to you!

Very interesting. Back in the early 80s when I was a volunteer in Baltimore County the paid department had a refill truck come to the major fires and refill bottles on site. But I can see why the mask services unit is much better for the FDNY. No time to fill on site just swap and go. Great video Skyler. I’m getting to look forward to Fleet Friday.

I assumed every fire house had a refill station. Is there a reason they mainly use 45 minute bottles and not 60 minute ones? How much does each bottle weigh when fully filled with air?
@SkylerFire
@SkylerFire 11 месяцев назад
As every firefighter breaths different a 45min bottle on a average firefighter probably lasts 27-30mins. Which they wouldn’t want a firefighter operating closer to a hour. That’s what relief is for. 60min bottles are for Hazmat mainly as you would want as much air as possible not not breath in Hazmat related. 45min bottle around 15 60min bottle around 18
