I would love for you to dedicate a full video to native plants. I have been adding them into my garden everytime I come across them now. I just found Joe Pye Weed and was so excited! P.S. It is because of your videos teaching this new gardener how beautiful and important natives are. Thank you so much!
It’s so funny that I just bought Pye seeds on Wednesday and on Thursday my fiancé called me to check out these purple things in bloom at his auto body shop. It was Pye weed and I swear they had to be 12 foot high. He has narrow purple stalks too growing near them. He has sweet pea back there too! Many gardners including myself are jealous of his shop bc he has all types of fern, wild hydrangea, all kinds of bloomers. He said just you just need hoods & fenders. 😁
Yes, I love natives. I gravitated towards them because I prefer a more natural, wild look, and then I fell in love with them the more I learned. I absolutely adore finding new bugs and feeling like my yard is a real part of the ecosystem. I like to mix mostly native straight species with my favorite cultivated plants. Rambling roses mixed with a cultivar of bluestem and boneset and black eyed susans that I grew from seed. I’m so happy seeing the yard come to life! Thanks for featuring these beauties!!
Definitely do the "why" native plants video to get the word out - it's so frustrating because most garden centers promote cultivars so I order natives online. Good video too btw!
Yuliya, can't say this enough, LOVE your videos, thanks for another great one sharing your wealth of knowledge! I love clethras too, thanks for speaking about them and that they are slow to bud out - I was worried this year constantly checking on them! Also was researching agastache too but haven't added it yet to my garden, I have one spot that I was thinking to add it or Veronica. Would love if you could talk about plants that add beneficial insects to the garden that naturally control pests or best ones in your opinion.🙏🙏✌️💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
Yes please to the native plant video! You have (what I consider) the epitome of the perfect mix of a native/non-native garden. I’ve seen other native gardens that look like a mess, and yours looks kempt & glorious! You are inspiring so many of us to mindfully choose natives - thank you!
Great look at some of your native plants. I have 5 of these featured plants already with several more on my wish list. I find that interesting being we are on opposite sides of the continent and I’m in a colder growing zone. Part of what I love about your channel is your great knowledge and use of native plants.
I just added a Clethra to my landscape last week. It's small now but I'm hopeful I'll have flowers next summer. I put it under the bedroom window so I'm hoping the scent can waft in on nights when we can open the windows. Exciting to try new plants! 💮🌿🌼
I’d watch any video you make because you are such wealth of knowledge, your property is gorgeous and you have a beautiful personality, but all that aside - yes, please make a why to . . . native video!
You mentioned dividing rhizomes and giving them to your friend. Well we all can't be your friends but definitely would like to take part in the "sharing" process :-) maybe you can do a raffle at the time when you divide plants and we all can enter into a drawing! What an awesome gift would it be to receive a gift from your garden! Idk how that could be done, but just putting the idea out there ! Love your videos and info learned!
What a fantastic video! Your favorite natives are mine as well. Needless to say, I think you should create a video on why to plant natives. Thanks for all of your efforts! p.s. I learned a new term - devil strip. I turned our hell strip into a heaven strip and also use the the term "tree lawn" - apparently common in the midwest.
Thanks for this- and for your content in general. As an architect, I have worked with many landscape architects and garden designers. In that context I would say that your eye is very good indeed.
So enjoyed the video. I wish I had more sun! I’m working on a new large bed this fall and will have about 5 hrs of sun in the morning! No clue what to plant but do want pollinators. I have 2 plant that will definently going in, wine and roses wegelia and the trilogy wegilea. I hope that’s the right spelling🤪
I want more sun too! I have one very small spot in my garden that receives full sun. Most are 5 hours and under. You can grow plants but they are not going to be as prolific
I successfully winter sowed Agastache Foeniculum, Anise Hyssop, this year. I transplanted the seedlings in various parts of the yard. As you said, it likes the full sun the very best. I planted 2 in an old tree stump with compost. They are 3 feet tall and covered with bumble bees. If you do create a native plant video-can you please include which native plants that bloom spring, summer, and fall? I would love to have native blooms all the time. :-)
I love your garden.. the tall plants are fascinating!! Also many times you have spoken about removing the two large plants in front of your entrance planted by your Mom, pls don't ... I love them.. they make your garden unique... I cannot imagine your house without those plants...
Hi Yuliya 😊 I can definitely relate to many you've posted here! Thanks for update. I moved my Baptisia today. Thinking I needed to get out of hot afternoon sun. I'm sure she'll be happier! Question. I need to divide my large lambs ear. They are huge. Is there any trick I need to know, otherthan being careful to spead the leaves apart and gently divide the bulk of plants stems? I know we learn by doing and I'm not afraid to prune plants, but I care that my girls survive. I'm giving a friend some, and perhaps best to do late fall or early spring? Please give my your thoughts if you see me here. Thanks dear! 💜
in my experience lamb's ear are very tough. I divided any time except during heat wave. Lots of water at first then pretty drought tolerant. also this maybe helpful ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UxQ_rvpPHww.html
Hello. I fell in love with the elephant plant this summer. I also live in NJ. Where would you recommend purchasing some bulbs. Every where I ve gone so far do not have them.
I've wanted to grow clethra for decades, but was afraid it wouldn't like my sandy soil. It's okay with some shade, right? I'm removing a very mature 'Emerald Queen' maple tree (very beautiful fall color) so will miss the shade it has provided me the 30 years I've lived here. It has two leaders and after a mild tornado came through the area last year I am nervous of it falling. Yikes! $1000 was the best price I found. What I could do with that money. I'm leaving the trunk table height and will get a swing or bench. I think I'll plant hydrangeas around there and maybe some clethra, goats beard.
I’m leaving all my native plants go to seed rather than deadheading particularly this year bc the birds need our help desperately since here in nj, we are not supposed to have feeders out. I love the smell of Joe Pye.
Очень рада вашему новому видосу, наконец то :)) но в предверии осени вопрос про астры и однолетние и многолетние, не получается из семян вырастить, многолетние поделились легко и выжили в жару чудесным образом, хочется другие, а никак :)
I am very interested in anything you have to say about native plants. I loved this video! I was thinking of planting clethra on a slope under a maple tree and thought it would be too dry. Now I think maybe it would be ok. I live in North Alabama, zone 7B.
Clethra (“summersweet”) - you would not believe its fragrance…it rivals ANY OTHER native plant in NJ for its fragrance. A MUST to have in the garden. 🌸
Highly recommend also adding Aesculus parviflora 'Rogers' to your list if you have the space. I spotted a black swallowtail butterfly on one of their inflorescences yesterday!
@@greatgardensforall We chose this plant for our prairie border, on a high water table, because it can tolerate occasional wet conditions. But I see them frequently on conservation land and in parks, which suggests to me that once established, they can be tolerant of drier conditions. I would like to note that in all places that I can think of seeing them, there is a creek or stream or something within walkable distance..
Hello, Thank you for sharing and inspiring us with your garden! I bought some liatris bulbs for the first time and they are doing okay so far. You mentioned that you start them early in the spring and I am wondering if you lift them up in the fall even though they are a perennial for you. Best wishes, Dorothy
When and how can you prune clethra alnifolia 'Ruby Spice'? The builder's landscaper planted 3 of them around our AC unit and we do need to prune them to keep the AC unit clear. The shrubs just finished blooming.
Hi, I live in England and want to buy a Clethra for the garden, my soil is quite heavy clay that tends to become waterlogged in January, you mentioned they grow on riverbanks etc, will they tolerate temporary winter flooding?
Why is my phlox dying? I have some in my woodland garden and water it at the same time as my hydrangeas and other plants. The leaves wilt first and soon I can easily pluck the stems up from the ground. It’s on a slope and it doesn’t seem wet, but is phlox sensitive to overwatering? Only gets dappled sun. Volcano phlox bought potted last year.
Y Garden Hi Yuliya. Thanks for your help. I sent a box of sweet variegated iris to your P.O. Box last week. I thought you’d like their lavender blooms, but feel free to give them away otherwise. Have a good day!
Hi Yuliya! Do you know of a native grass (or other plants) that would do well in dry, partial shade? I have a steep slope in my garden that I would love to plant with native plants for pollinators and erosion control. This spot gets dapple shade during the morning and afternoon sun for about 4 hrs. I’m in zone 7a northern VA, Any plant suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I highly recommend Hoffman nursery. They don't sell to general public but have incredibly helpful search site for your grass needs. hoffmannursery.com/plants?features[]=Erosion%20control&
