Just recently discovered this channel about a month ago. And i instantly subscribed. I have loved gardening for yrs now. But i think you have inspired me even more so. I've expanded a new flower bed i created last year. I'm almost finished, just in time to maybe enjoy all of my hard work. I'm in middle Tn and the month of July here was extremely hot. Almost 2 months with no rain. Luckily since the end of July, we've been getting regular rain. I've been watching alot of your older yt videos and i really love your style and passion for gardening. Oh and the music you add is always so relaxing. 😊 💚🌱🌷🌱🦋💚

As much as I HATE the cold, this time of yr has me looking forward to autumn. Less mowing, dahlias and other late bloomers putting on a show. And I can rethink the garden for next yr. I really like little Joe, it's a beautiful thing.

Your hell strip is so pretty. I need to start planting more drought tolerant. This summer in Texas has been a real wake up call.

I really enjoy your channel and Jim Putnam. Other channels like Garden Answer and Gardening With Creekside are more commercial with a strong focus on Proven Winners promotion rather than home gardening.

Totally agree about the overabundance of marketing on a lot of these yt gardening channels.

You’re right! And it’s not easy to find those same Proven Winners varieties. Also check out Northlawn Flower Farms and Cranery Gardens.

I appreciate your tips on which plants are drought tolerant. As I get older (!) I need to concentrate on plants that need less intervention from me.

I recommend starting with an insecticidal soap first. Need oil by Bonide is pretty good if you start using it before insect larvae get a start or egg layers start depositing. It won’t work for everything but it is safe. I usually have trouble with sawfly on columbine and if I start early spraying they will typically not do as much damage. Of course there is no real method like just being out there and picking them off by hand.

I enjoy the everyday garden jobs, I reassures me that you lovely youtube gardeners are no different than us,thereforw I can also attempt to bring to life the magical gardens you have. Sidenote: I think you would be very good friends with Danielle from North Lawn Flowerfarm. She is also a garden enthusiast.

Thanks for the information about the euphorbia. I didn't realize it was drought tolerant. I think I'm going to try it in my hell strip next year because I like the idea that it will self seed. I also have verbena bonariensis in my hell strip so I think it will really look great after seeing your border. Thanks again!

Love the tour, even if it is cleanup. Always like knowing how to save seeds. Yes you are right the Euphorbia is beautiful and like to hear about what it looks good next to. Wondering if you grew from seed or if it easily found in nurserys? I did grow China Aster from seed this year (after hearing you talk about it) and it's great to see it blooming now!

Your hellstrip garden in beautiful!!! I am so frustrated that after working on my all year (and last year), mine is a wasteland. People walk on it, and let their dogs do their business and dig in it. Today, a women was harvesting plants from it to feed her rabbit. I was standing less than 10 feet away when she did this, without asking for permission. WTF? How do I get people to respect my efforts to create a hellstrip garden?
@kareharpies
@kareharpies 2 года назад
If Yulia never responds it'll be because she's been lucky to have good neighbors. I have crappy ones so i can tell you that I had to put a low teir wooden fence around mine (4 vertical 18 in. posts for each corner, 2 horizontal slats across with space between them). I painted it as well to make it obvious that it was a cared for plot. I added an electronic dog repeller so they wont be stopping to pee where their hearing is so aggravated. My last tip is that, unless you have no other land, a hellstrip is no place for expirimenting. People abuse what looks like raw dirt and so does the sanitation department and the deliveryman too. Save your seeds, seedlings, half dead clearance plants for another place they can be nurtured. Gather all the mature plants you need for your strip - and all the compost and mulch too! - and plant the hellstrip all at once. If its beautiful and they frequently see you out there maintaining it they'll leave it alone. I'd put up a very specific sign about 'stealing plants for pet rabbits' so your one neighbor knows you've seen her. It sucks that we have to shame people but they started it by acting shamefully. I have 'certified pollinator garden' and 'bee haven' signs that's been brilliantly doing the trick since last year! Neighbor's and passerbys have stopped to admire and take pics but its brought respect to my tiny strip so FINALLY it is left alone. Lastly, keep on trying, dont let nasty people steal your joy of gardening every spec of earth you have.

@@kareharpies Thank you!!! I really appreciate your full response. Armed with your advice, I will insist on enjoying a garden on every spec of earth that I have.

Will zinnia respond well to a prunning this time of year? I have a patch of them that looked so pretty the first part of the season but the lack of rain and high heat we’ve had recently has really beat them up! I’m zone 8a, coastal NC. Love your videos!!

How dare weeds take up residence in YOUR garden 🤨 I feel all I've done this season is weed my beds and they still look weedy. Trimming back the hell strip plants really show off the elephant ears. I planted a couple in the ground, late, and they're about half the size as yours. I'll have to watch your video on storing the corms(?) because I really like that look and will definitely repeat it, albeit earlier planting. Here in Minneapolis it's been delightful weather the past week or two and even got some rain. It should be headed your way. I see signs that we'll have an early fall this year. I'm not ready! I love these 70 degree days. My kind of weather. I like your idea to simplify the plantings for next year. White and purple have become my go-to scheme with dots of pink.

Do you think it’s ok to keep plants that are considered invasive, but are controllable in your garden? I have a large swath of Gooseneck Loosestrife that doesn’t spread unless we have a rare wet summer. The pollinators love it.

Maybe that's why I'm having a flea hopper problem so bad this year. I've been too busy with other things to weed. 😅 How many applications did you need to get rid of them?
@Edu_Kate
@Edu_Kate 2 года назад
Since we're talking bugs. This year, I noticed round holes in leaves, about the size of a pencil eraser. Maybe a bit larger. When I cultivated the soil nearby I found a cluster of the removed leaf circles stashed in the soil. What do suppose that bug is? Why stash the part they cut out? Very odd.

Could it be leaf miner bees? I think they chew pieces of leaf off and use it to build a nest? I could be wrong but worth checking out…
@Edu_Kate
@Edu_Kate 2 года назад
@@heatherw.2751 I think you're right, based on a quick search the holes look just like what I saw. Gosh! I better check on that spot again. They may have built a nest in the several weeks since I weeded that area. Thank you so much.
