Derek and Mike are joined in the What Are You Doing in Denmark studio by comedian, Ira Sylvester. As a Brit living in Denmark since 2020, Ira has a some hilarious stories, comparisons, and outlooks to share - and he's not shy about giving us all of them.
We had a lot of laughs over Ira's explanation for why Danes don’t laugh. You’ll love hearing about how Ira’s former bank made “hygge racist” bank errors in his annual spending profile, and why he would like Danes to standardize how they use middle names.
We also discuss all the things about living in Denmark that just make sense for internationals and Danes including how much Marilyn Monroe autographs are selling for in this economy.
Keep watching for even more laughs, discussion about life in Denmark, and some theories on the death of Princess Diana. The trio discuss what Ira misses most about the United Kingdom and what British, American, and Danish things are overrated or underrated. Don’t miss their hot takes on Stonehenge and the Spice Girls!
Mike predicts what American slang words Ira will know in order to see if he can retain him as a BFF, and Ira reveals what Danish activity is the perfect set up for murder.
What Are You Doing in Denmark? The Robe Trotting Podcast is now streaming on all platforms and right here where it all began on RU-vid.

Yeah, Jeff is hilarious! We've seen him perform and Derek's met him a couple of times so hopefully we can make it happen 😀

In regards to naming, you can have two or more first names in DK. You can also have several middle names and last names. I wanted to give my first born the first name Oliver, the middle names Valentin Sundby and then my wife at the time last name. I couldn't give him the middle name Valentin as it was registered as a first name for me, because when I was named there where no middle names, only first and last. I therefore had to change my name from first name Thomas Valentin and middle name Sundby to first name Thomas and middle name Valentin Sundby. It is a ridiculous system, but it is there afterall. So Liv Jasmin is most likely her first name.

The silence, I think it's part of Jante Loven, why is my opinion so valuable I will need to interrupt the show for one comedian to reply too.

For the Taco Day part. Guys! You definitely need to try an Italian pizza at Aalborg Street Food. There is a pizza truck with 'real' pizza oven and the shef is a real Italian guy who does not speak a work in Danish and bearly speak English too. But those pizzas are real. ;)

(EDITED BELOW) 1) Frank Opinion -- Careful about needing to be thought of as being cool. Doing so is a bit adolescent, methinks. If what you do is spot-on, your prowess will rise above others' having perhaps mis- perceived you, and/or staying comatose throughout your set. 2) Brit comedy tends to take the piss out of anyone. I love it! Brits excel at satire, i.e, bringing powerful people down a peg. The Pythons and Spitting Image did that fairly well, as I recall. I loved Dad's Army, The Two Ronnies and The Big Breakfast. Paula Yates was brilliant. 3) Speaking of brilliant Brit comedy, Rick Mayall and Ade Edmondson were one-offs rude-boys in "The Young Ones" which none other than Micky Dolenz (ex of The Monkees) tried valiantly to transport to American telly but, simply could not do to the prudishness of our media, here. I'm American by the way. NO ONE does satire better than the British. And, I reckon no one will. And, no one does self effacing humour better than the Aussies, as well. Right, so ....

Unlike our dear British / English cousins we are brought up with the idea that it's very rude to interrupt people or shouting very loud "funny" comments constantly 😂, so we don't always understand, when we are suddenly supposed to do so anyway - and then we don't really have your heckling traditions either, so we probably lack the skills of an experienced British audience in that field 😂 So basically these "weird" Danes are just showing respect for you and the other performers - it's a cultural thing, I suppose. Also English is not our first language, so even though most of us Danes may be fairly good or better at speaking and understanding English in general - also because of the many deep similarities in basic vocabulary and grammatical features between Danish & English - , we may actually require a bit more focus than you guys to understand everything in English, especially when it's spoken very quickly and with a thick London accent with lots of glottal stops like yours, which is a bit far from the "usual" BBC RP English to put it mildly. 🙄😂

Instead of blaming the audience for not reacting as expected, maybe it's the comedian who needs to understand the audience and adapt to the culture of the country

That’s a little defensive, I don’t think he was blaming anyone, just explaining the facts and how the audiences are different.

@@RobeTrotting That's not what I heard. I heard a disappointed comedian blaming the audience for not being like he wanted them to be
