How does Janteloven impact you at work, school, and in Danish society?

Derek and Annie are once again joined by comedian, Conrad Molden, to discuss Janteloven. The three practice ‘Jante Math’ (a spin on the online trend of ‘Girl Math’) by praising each other’s achievements and downplaying them in true Janteloven fashion. Why was it so uncomfortable for them? Discussion about the moment in history that the concept was named helps to unlock some cultural context around these societal rules.
The conversation continues around the ways that Janteloven can seep into your life. For foreigners living in Denmark, this is commonly concentrated in school and at work, but is often farther-reaching. Annie shares some Janteloven lessons that her oldest child experienced at school. Derek explains how even picking an apartment when arriving in Denmark was influenced by Janteloven, and Conrad has us cracking up while describing a hypothetical Danish version of MTV Cribs.

Janteloven for me was more know when I was a teen, but I didn't really care for it. I just went how I wanted to be and I didn't think about it differently, today stil only hear about janteloven when people want to talk about Denmark to people who haven't really learnt much about the history. I always speak my mind it not necessarily because of janteloven or my upbringing, its more what I have grown into. I feel like you shouldn't lie to other people but always tell the truth, help people. I cant be fake, it's impossible to me to lie and be fake. It feels so uncomfortable, so being honest,kind and respectful is what feels right inside. Never understood why being uncomfortable or saying something you don't mean. To me the most important behaviour is people being who they are, being honest and kind, respectful and want to learn but also just feel like they are who they wanna be and are happy. Its very important to me that people are happy with their life and find a way to get there to be happy, having the life they want. I know to well the bad problems and such, so I'm using my past both good and bad as much as possible to help people. I always feel so uncomfortable when people hurt because I know how it feels so I wanna help them to get back up and find themselves. So they can find a way to live have friends and find or have a family that are a well functional heartwarming family. Everybody deserves love and a close happy family. My family feels distant to me, i always feel misunderstood or not saying all I want to them, because of my past what happened to us, today I'm trying to get them closer together, but they also need to be ready for it not just me. Idk, I love seeing happy families it makes me so happy 🩵

Dane here: so interesting to hear your perspectives/experiences! But I cant help to emphesize that you are all in the capital/Copenhagen. The Danish experience in the provinces - and not that many kilometers from Copenhagen - is wildly different . It is lot more restrictive/jantelov-like there...
@RobeTrotting

Conrad has lived all over Jutland and has only lived in Copenhagen for 2 month of his 10+ years in Denmark. If it’s more intense outside of Copenhagen, that’s interesting - but I don’t think we ever described it as only a Copenhagen thing. What are you trying to say?
@sanktp01
@sanktp01 Месяц назад
@@RobeTrotting You have not said it is only a Copenhagen thing and I am not saying your experiences are invalid - just saying that Denmark, although very small, has a large rural population that are more conservative and - sorry to say - critical of immigration and more "jante"-like.

"Life sentence" in Denmark is 16 years, But there are prisons that inmates will never get out of.

Loved it ❤ even though I'm a fan of the Jantelov. It keeps our feet on the ground 😊. I do believe that shows of success are good thing, because if your successful, Then DK is doing well 👍. It's mostly "braggers" we don¨t like and that's where "Jante" comes in 😊 ! Tip! Don't bake your own bread, for the reasons mentioned here. Most Danes go to a Bakery. Yeah some people bake for special family occasions but rarely for there Child's Daycare or Kindergarten. The ones who do, are just showing off 😎

Getting rid of guests, and for guests to know when to leave, is a real problem. Danish culture has worked with it long enough to find the occasional solution. E.g., at the end of a party, one custom is to serve soup - 'skrubafsuppe' ('shove off soup' in BE, or 'get lost soup' in AE). When you've eaten that, you leave.

If you freeze the bread (slice it first), it will be like newly baked, when you defrost it, piece by piece.

Janteloven, is just a short term for saying "Do not think you are better than everyone else, because you're not" - It's not so much about devalue accomplishments or achievements - but more like, "Even though you just won a million bucks, you bought a new boat, is dining with the Queen AND you eat only organic and you're farts smell like roses - then you are still not a better person than me"... I guess it's a way to keep a steady, level head and grounded feet, maybe 🤷‍♀️ Danes are not big splashers, we do not need to be seen or heard all the time - which fit in well with the "Jantelov" mindset. I think thats the biggest difference between Americans and Danes actually, maybe even Europeans in general. Americans are brought up in a society where the individual is everything. YOU are important, full stop. In Denmark, noone is more important than the community as a whole. Here, everything is about fitting into the society - you as an individual has to bend to fit, the society will not bend for you because you feel you are speciel. Which again, might be why we think and act the way we do 🤷‍♀️😊 I think thats a big difference between Denmark and US (even UK) I'm Not saying it's good or bad - Just different 😊

I’m not showing how much money I have, still wear old ordinary clothes, the car gets washed every 5 years, not getting nails done, no vacations abroad. But in my quiet little cube I feel “safe”. 😉

Noone has respect for SKAT's work. Britta Nielsen and Sanjay Shah are just some cases to explore of why Danes might not have any respect for the authorities..

Janteloven has the impact you allow it to have.😉 Aksel Sandemose, (the author of 'A refugee crosses his track', in which 'The Jante Law' originates) has never believed that the 'Jante Law' is something special for Denmark or Danes, it was his opinion that the 'Jante Law' is universal. Read the book..'A refugee crosses his tracks'...😊It is not knowledge about Danish culture to have an opinion about Danish culture, regardless of how many followers you have on SoMe Mr.➡ cultural intelligence 😂

Note that Janteloven is never brought up as something positive in Denmark. For whatever reason, foreign media always makes it out to be some kind of cultural trait that "keeps us humble" or "makes society more equal," but in Danish society it's always recognized as something negative. For instance it's usually identified as a big cause of bullying, and people always bring it up when someone tries to rag on you and downplay your achievements etc. So no, Danes don't think of it as some core part of their culture that they're proud of.

Well, mostly people just leave when they want to, i haven't had a problem with someone not leaving. 😊 If ever a problem they know me enough, so they will not get hurt in any way if I say, Nå, nu er det vist på tide vi slutter for idag. Or Tak for idag, glad for at se jer men nu det hjemtid. Things like that, just never had that problem before 😊🩵
