@@Fatpie42 I deeply love murder mystery movies, and the Zodiac is by far my favorite simply because it's real, and when the real is as gripping and terrifying as the story of the Zodiac Killer, it enthrals in a way that fiction can’t. Not to mention its accuracy. I don't get scared easily, but that basement scene is one of the most unnerving experiences I've ever had watching a movie. I would also go as far as to say that Zodiac is the best portrayal of obsession that I have seen depicted on film. From a filmmaking standpoint, everything is perfect. I could go on and on, but I don't want to end up writing an essay in the RU-vid comment section. 😂
@@Wolfe-zl4ld Interesting. But murder mysteries set out a selection of possible suspects, don't they? I've never really thought of Zodiac as a murder mystery because it never really felt to me like we got any actual genuine understanding of the evidence.
I loved this format of covering Fincher’s films chronologically and then ranking them based on your favorites rather than just rank them first. I felt that I got a cool history lesson about Fincher and I now need to watch more of his films as I’ve only seen The Social Network. I would love you to explore more directors.
I love Fincher. I also did not love Zodiac. Too long and not as suspense and engaging as Se7en, which is not only my favourite Fincher film but one of my favourite movies ever. I should see Zodiac again some time though, maybe I'll get it better. I also can't fully feel the Fight Club after 2 times I watched it. Although I realise how cool it is, but something just doesn't click with me... Gone girl is probably my second favourite from Fincher.
@@ImpressionBlend we completely love it! As someone who is just starting in cinema, I'm learning so much with your videos! It's very fun and I'm very enjoying it. :)
Zodiac is Fincher’s finest film. Its long runtime makes you feel the decades roll by and how frustrating it must have been for the main character in his hunt for the truth. I also believe it’s the second greatest film about journalism ever made. The tedious day after day research was not overlooked here and the performances were stunning especially Mark Ruffalo. This slow burn of this film just washes over you especially on the second viewing. This film is strangely cerebral to watch which sounds really odd since it’s a manhunt of a serial killer but it’s true. Fincher could have edited out a good chunk of run time but it’s effect on the audience would have been reduced considerably. When the screen fades to black at the end you feel the frustration of every journalist and police officer who dedicated so much of their life to knowing the truth. My advice is give this movie a second watch during some downtime like a snowstorm perhaps. This movie grows on you and in my opinion is a masterpiece of filmmaking. Happy holidays🍾🍸🎄
I might be biased when it comes to The Game because it was one of my favourite thrillers to watch growing up. Sure it's not on the top half of my list either, and there's a lot of story elements that make absolutely zero sense but hey, a guilty pleasure is a guilty pleasure! xD I also think Zodiac is one of his best. In fact, I go back and forth between this and Social Network as number one. :) I'm loving this format btw. Great work as always!
Zodiac is a perfect movie, and it's not just technical craft, it's the acting, the script, the score, the suspence, the way the movie builds and keeps you in the edge all the time. I've watched 3 times, with all due respect calling this movie "too long" It's nonsense, it flies by. The basement scene it's the scary scene ever put to film in my humble opinion.
He is my fav! The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is my favorite by him. He nailed it. I read the book and he kept his film genuine. He designed the dragon tattoo for Lisbeth which I now have tattooed in my thigh 🖤🐉 se7en and Fight Club are my other favs too! I’m subscribed by the way girl! 💯✨
Marianna I am one of those people who consider Zodiac to be his best. I have seen it several times and as soon as it is over I want to watch it again. It could be that I grew up precisely at that moment and in that place and I can testify that he completely nails it. History is a big deal for me. I truthfully can't think of one film that has ever really captured the cauldron of San Fransisco during the hippie era. This moment is slightly past that here and the focus slightly different, but damn this is as close as we ever may see. So starting right there it's done what no film has ever done before. Next I think the acting and the story are incredible. I think by focusing on Graysmith (I had read his book long before the movie came out.) he allowed the mystery of the evil to leak out beyond the obvious details and reconstructions. And then there is the growing mood within the film. The obsession of Graysmith is encircled by a darkness which only grows more impenetrable as it film unspools. And the murders are particularly stark in the way I would imagine they might be in reality. (Although who can really say except the victims.) And odd moments like the visit to the basement or entering the hardware store, throwaway moments in a lesser film, are lodged deeply in my memory. And they remind me of real moments of unease. When I was young I was picked up hitchhiking exactly this area of California at night by a man with a pockmarked face in a small sports car who was playing the Doors "The End'. Still can't get that out of my head simply for dread. Fincher taps into that sense of unease effortlessly in this film. Now I know you have become a big Benjamin Button fan. But frankly apart from the reverse aging magic trick I can't even remember the point of the film. For me it's Zodiac. It's in my top 5 of the 21st Century, somewhere after Martyrs and Pan's Labyrinth. But isn't it great that we all see different things? Or that Fincher is such an artist that we can debate which are his best films? So YEAH! Heck yeah! I want part two! And I want more Marianna deep dives into worthy directors. (I can see Denis Villeneuve coming up.) You can make them an hour long each I'll stick with you. И мне нужен твой список Тарковского! (By the way I love the way you are doing the ranking in chronological order. Classy move.)
I think Zodiac is his best film, it’s actually one of my personal favourites. I do agree that it’s quite cold, but I think it’s that coldness that makes it so chilling and that might be intentional. I think it’s a masterpiece, as a true crime drama and as a detective procedural 10/10 :)
Alien 3 is my personal favorite film out of the entire alien series. I always hope that he will come back to it and fix the cgi and the story. There is many of us eho absolutely love this movie, especially the "director's" cut. Yes, it's flawed, but it's still brilliant
I agree I never watch Alien and Aliens w/out Alien 3. One of my favorites as well. Much grittier than the other 2. Its a badass horror scifi that doesnt need an expanded story arc.
@@Holy_Frakula I’m not as hard on it as others but I find it kinda redundant. I’d like it a lot more if Hicks and Newt were able to be in it. Would’ve been more tense.
I am digging the chronological yet non-sequential reviews. Personally, Se7en is my fave Fincher film. And around the time it was released, I learned that Fincher directed many of my favorite music videos (when that was a thing) in the late '80s and early '90s.
Se7en is one of my favorite films of all time. I NEED recommendations for books or films that are similar. I definitely consider it a horror film as it is one of TWO movies I can say actually scared me!!
Well, I've always felt that Saw was a poor imitation and arguably Silence of the Lambs is a similar sort of film. Not sure what else I could point to. What was the other film that scared you?
@@Fatpie42 okay it’s kind of embarrassing haha but honestly I watched this movie about three years ago and had nightmares and got up multiple times in the night to make sure my bedroom door was locked. For some reason it of all things I’ve watched just got to me. It’s The Cell!
@@thepedalbrake No shame there. While I'm not convinced Jennifer Lopez can carry a leading role (though I haven't seen Hustlers which had people demanding she be considered for an Oscar), the nightmare imagery in The Cell is creepy as hell. And Vincent D'onofrio is horrifyingly creepy as the disturbing serial killer.
@@thepedalbrake. If you want to see some good serial killer movies then check out these films from South Korea all brilliant. Memories of Murders, The Chasher, I Saw The Devil, Tell Me Something. And there are more 😊
I’m really loving your videos lately. Ranking a director’s filmography is absolutely a great idea! Behind our lord and saviour Denis Villeneuve, Fincher is another one of my favourite directors 😉 I think I shared a lot of the same sensibility with you, because I also felt the length of Zodiac. You’ve only talked about one of my favourite Fincher films (i.e. Seven) in Part 1, so I can’t wait for the rest of the list. Keep up the good work! Don’t get discouraged by the numbers. I hope the algorithm treats you better. ❤️
I'll admit that I haven't watched your videos in a while, but I swear I'll get back on that! Love your work! Also David Fincher is one of my favourite directors. Se7en is just... the greatest.
I like how you add some background context to each film, very interesting! I feel similarly about Zodiac, like you say its not as good as the sum of its parts for me. Can't wait for part 2!
Zodiac is pretty easily his best for me, i do think it's cold as you say but that's kind of the point of the movie, that the killer never got caught. That's what makes it so chilling
I agree with...everything! More thoughts later, but for now: YES to the AWESOME new format (it’s very you!), learned LOTS in this, wow did you nail your reviews here, and EVERYONE: SHE’S RIGHT!!!! SUBSCRIBE!!!! HER’S IS THE BEST CHANNEL!!! Again, more later. In the meantime, AWESOME video and discussions, as always
Love this format! I really liked Alien 3. My favourite Fincher films are Se7en and Gone Girl. Least favourite is Zodiac. That movie is so bloated and boring.
Just recently ranked mine on letterboxd. For me it was 1. Fight Club 2. Seven 3. Zodiac 4. The Social Network 5. Gone Girl 6. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 7. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button 8. Mank 9. The Game 10. Panic Room 11. Alien 3 I'm sooo curious to see your top 2 after this! 😁
Fincher has made so many of my all time favourites, so it's really tough for me to rank his movies. I still have yet to see Panic Room, Mank, Alien³ or Benjamin Button but my ranking of the ones I have seen would be 7. The Game 7.2/10 6. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 8.4/10 5. Gone Girl 9.4/10 4. Zodiac 9.7/10 3. Fight Club 9.9/10 2. The Social Network 9.9/10 1. Se7en 10/10
I loved the ending of The Game... it's fantastic! Seven is my numer two of his... sheer perfection in every aspect. Panic room is excellent and extremely suspensful. Fight Club is overrated, in my opinion... is the one from THIS LIST I've rewatched the least (Is a great movie, but not that much fun for me to re watch) and the extended cut of Zodiac is AMAZING. Can't wait for the next part of this.
I loved Panic Room when I was younger, enjoyed Alien 3 well enough and was utterly disturbed by Seven, but I actually haven’t seen Fight Club yet and haven’t been interested in it until now. I’ve never actually heard it described in detail before so now I’m REALLY interested~ 🧐🤔
I think they had real trouble working out how to market Fight Club. The trailers just seemed to show bunch of men fighting in basements, but it's about so much more than that. It's essentially about a guy losing all faith in his role as a citizen of society and joining a kind of counter-cultural chaotic extremist group, but there's so much more to it than that. And to think that around the same time there was so much buzz for American Beauty, where rebellion against society just equalled smoking weed and fantasising about a teenage girl.
@@Fatpie42 It sounds like Wanted with James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie is similar, which puts it way more down my lane then I’d thought. I absolutely thought it was all just dudes fighting for whatever reason and wrote it off! 😅 Yo... I love American Beauty tho, pretentious at it might be. It was both hilarious and beautiful to me~ 😆
Mank was boring as hell. I love The Game, I had the dvd and later bought the blu ray, it's very fun and entertaining and Michael Douglas is great. Honestly I find Seven quite disgusting, saw it once at the cinema and never again, it's no a movie to re-watch unless you don't have stomach problems. I found Zodiac good but way too long. To me Fincher's best are THE SOCIAL NETWORK & GONE GIRL. Sorry not sorry lol 😏
His earliest films are the best. I don't quite know what happened after that but his later films just seem to drag for me. Fight Club, Se7en and Alien 3 are great. (The Assembly Cut is unwatchable.) The Game is unfortunately let down by a lame ending. The rest of Fincher's movies? Eh, I couldn't care less....
Enjoyed Part 1. Looking forward to Part 2. Yes, I liked this video formate. I would like to see you cover more Directors. Maybe Terrence Malick or David Lynch. I’d really like to hear your thoughts on their films.
*To the 50% non-subscribers - HIT THE LITTLE RED BUTTON. Her videos are consistent in quality and depth. I used to be an anti-subscriber too, but her channel is certainly worth hitting the little red button... so do it. I really hope The Social Network isn't number one, haha. I would definitely be interested to see your Stanley Kubrick ranking - he had a relatively small amount of films like Fincher, but as you know, quality > quantity.
It still blows my mind that in the middle of his A River Runs Through It/Interview With The Vampire/Legends Of The Fall hot-guy superstardom, Brad Pitt took on Se7en. Props to him for challenging himself instead of just coasting.
Here's the thing Marianna: to every question you ask about video ideas that have crossed your mind the answer IS and will ALWAYS be HELL YEAH!!! Also, Zodiac is easily top 5 imo.
For me, David fincher filmography tend to vary in quality from film to film. Weirdly he always tend to make a somewhat bad film (alien 3, the game, panic room, Benjamin button, dragon tattoo) after a good one (se7en, fight club, zodiac, the social network, gone girl). Now after seeing mank. It confirmed my theory. Can't wait for his next film.
Giving Zodiac the same rating as Panic Room should be a criminal offence. Seriously tho, great ranking format! Doesn't spoil the rating when the movie comes up.
I really disagree on the Assembly Cut of Alien 3... Fair point, it's probably the less Fincher-esque film of his filmography, for all the reasons we know... But I don't think Panic Room and Benjamin Button are that great, and The Game as well as Mank, in my opinion, fall much more apart in their third act... Alien 3 is probably the worst Fincher film as far as directing is concerned, but as far as story and screenplay is concerned, I think it's a bit unfair to have it that low on the list. The autopsy scene, the incineration scene, all the scenes featuring Charles S. Dutton, the production design of the prison, the religious overtones of the story and how they are overall conveyed... Thematically, I think Panic Room is a way less interesting and rewatchable film than Alien 3 AC is.
Love the video. I haven't seen all his movies (I know them though), but I doubt any of them will surpass Fight Club. I am not going to talk about it for obvious reasons though :) (sorry for the cheap pun). I have soft spot for The Game. I read your review on Letterboxd, and while I agree with it, there are times when I am willing to forgive and forget :). I am probably in very small minority that didn't love 7 as much as everyone else.
Great video. David Fincher is one of my favorite director too. I have watched all of his films. I sort of agree with your ranking so far. The ending of "The Game" seemed not fitting or something lacking. I originally did not like the Fight Club, probably because I was very young when I first watched the film. Well, my interpretation of the film changed entirely on the second viewing. I like this new kind of video idea of ranking films of a director. I would like to see more of these videos with Quentin Tarantino, Chris Nolan, Martin Scorsese etc
I really like seeing the films discussed chronologically and then rated. It’s a great way to revise these kinds of lists. I’m sadly behind in watching all of Fischer’s work, but I do agree - so far - with these rankings, except for ‘Fight Club’, which I just didn’t like at all on first viewing. Maybe I was too old to “get it” and I’m also not really a fan of the ‘unreliable narrator’ genre, but it would definitely be towards the bottom of my list, technical and acting achievements aside.
Alien 3 was maybe his least good but I enjoy the hell out of it. im a 90s kid, nihilism and grittiness are my jam. Aliens was too "Disney" for me with that happy ending. Alien 3 jolted the series back to dark horror. not a perfect movie, some terrible cgi, but a very 90s horror movie. the vibe is so nostalgic for me.
Wow I don't know why I never watched that video it's rigth up my alley but hey better late than never. Pretty spot on list so far except for Zodiac, not going to lie it's my personal favorite I know I'm a bit weird for this but still I love everything about it plus the way they so accurately recreated some real life crimes is really chilling for me. Anyway I could go on all day with that movie so I'll just shut up now still great stuff and go watch part 2
The game is brilliant, they did a psychological profile in the beginning of Michael Douglas. They predicted he would jump to his death based upon that analysis, simply brilliant
I think you need to give the game more credit and just dont think about it logically in terms of plot, there are tonnes of "well what if xxx happened here?" moments alright. But its more about the overall themes of loneliness, isolation, grief, apathy etc. What is a person once you strip away their posessions, power and status?
Zodiac is more than just style, the movie expertly gets into what happened during the Zodiac murders, as Fincher made the film as close to accurate as possible, and the script was fantastic as it was insightful, mysterious and character driven. When I fist watched the film, I also found it to be boring and inconsistent, and when I started rewatching it, the movie somehow got more engaging and compelling. As for the lack of closure, that is exactly what happened by the end of the Zodiac murder investigation, as the killer was never caught.
I actually did like the setting and look of Alien 3 a lot, as well as some other things about it. It’s inferior to the first two films but I still think it’s decent and way better than Resurrection or any film to follow that had xenomorphs in it. I agree completely about Panic Room. Fight Club is actually something I must rewatch, as I’m now in my thirties and feel like a coming of age story could do me good. I think I was in my early 20s when I last watched it. I wasn’t as big a fan of Zodiac as most people. It just seemed a bit too slow for me.
Funny, of all his films - and they are good films - Alien 3 is my favourite. It is more bleak and unique and raw and honest than the rest, which were so ... scripted, so tightly written, cast, filmed and directed.... this one feels like an original, like a haunting vision of how one feels 'out there'. Even though I am a lifelong fan of 1 and 2, 3 resonates with me better than 1 ever did - the loneliness, the sense of being trapped, the iron, the rust, the shitty people no better or worse than most any people, and the sense of being nothing no matter how hard you fight, unless someone can make money off you - as sci fi horror goes, this one nailed all of the marks. The 1 and 2 are excellent, by any standard, but I find myself at home with 3 the most.
I will never understand why a big studio would give a once noobie young director a chance to direct a big franchise as Alien? It still baffles me. At least now Fincher is 1 hell of a director.
I can see i am late for that one. Is it RU-vid fault or Impression Blend, not sure yet. First, i wanted to say that i love that ranking based on release time instead on a 10 to 1 format. Second, can't wait to get the other films ranking, unless it is another youtube trick and it's already out ? sidenote : that RU-vid recommendations is very, but very broken.
This is a great format that takes a lot of work. It shows even at first glance with the timestamps, chapters etc. You are spoiling us. As for the films I have a feeling we'll end up talking about something very curious ;)
Wow... She saddled Zodiac with a 7/10... relegated it to the “meh” tier where The Game, Panic Room, and Alien 3 are huddled in a dark corner fighting for loose crumbs. I would have thought at least an 8/10... or 8.5. But hey, you gotta love her sweet honesty. Yes, indeedy.
I like how you went through his filmography in order and then ranked it instead of just doing it in order from last to first. I’m also excited for part two to see where The Social Network ends up on the list considering it’s one of my favorite movies of all time!
