This was released in 1970 when I was 3yrs old so I've known this song all my life. Apart from a couple of questionable lines by todays standards (no kids, you shouldn't drink & drive and no you can't do as you please just because her dad is poor) it still sounds excellent. Lead singer Ray Dorset wrote this and you know when someone writes a song that is popular, it's been around for what feels like forever and it's paid the writer's mortgage? I'm pretty sure that this has paid Ray Dorset's mortgage! BTW, he's now 75 and still playing music ...

Mungojerrie is a character from a book by T.S. Elliot "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats". Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer are also characters in the Broadway musical "Cats" which is based on the aforementioned T.S. Elliot work. In the film, "Logan's Run" there's a character, called simply "Old Man", played by Peter Ustinov. He is found by the main characters in the ruins of the U.S. capitol building with dozens and dozens of cats. He quotes several passages from "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats".

The three of you together is cool to watch. Lex, your enthusiasm is infectious. It’s such a joy to see you enjoy yourself to music I listened to when I was very young, and still do. Brad, the way you analyze the music with the lyrics is a lot like how I always have. I think I’m a cross between you and Lex. I analyze it and lose myself in the music. Berto(hope I’m not butchering your name), your perspective is really interesting and I hope to see you reacting more with the Couch Gang. Thank you to the three of you!

A couple errors in the lyrics, first: "Speed along the lane, do a ton or a ton and twenty-five". A ton = 100mph. In the UK, the speed limit on country roads is typically 60mph, but since this is indicated by a "speed de-restriction" sign, we would take that to mean as fast as you like. But seriously, 100mph on the lanes where I grew up would put you in the morgue in short order. Another error: "when the sun goes down, you can make it, make it good in a layby". A layby is a pull-off at the side of the road, you figure out "making it good in a layby" for yourselves! Great 1970's ethos: "Have a drink , have a drive" As someone else points out, this was the summer anthem in the UK early 70's.

This was a British take on an American tradition. Check out the Memphis Jug band or Gus Cannon. This was from the 1920s and 30s and part of the blues scene. People made their own instruments to play the dances in rural communities. I bought this with my first girlfriend in 1970 and then in the 1990s played in a jug band in the UK. this was one of our staples and always went down well. Great fun to play!

Mungo Jerry was a jug band (someone actually blows into an empty jug producing the "wishing sound") which had several similar sounding songs but they eventually turned more traditional since the jug sound was too limiting. Great reaction to a great song. BTW, Ray Dorset, the singer, has the greatest mutton chops in history.

I have been literally listening to this song my entire life. It was a favorite of my fathers when it came out and I was just born. He used to sing it to himself when I was around all the time.

Wow. I am amazed you found this golden oldie. Big hit when I was a kid. Another great summer tune is Sunny Days by Lighthouse.

Other songs by Mungo Jerry are 'Lady Rose', 'Mighty man' and 'You don't have to be in the army to fight in the war' all pretty much in the same type of music called Jug Band. Another band in a similar flavour was McGuinness Flint, 'Malt and barley blues' and 'Happy birthday Ruthie Baby'

LYRIC CORRECTION: "SPEED ALONG THE LAKE, DO A TON OR A TON AND TWENTY FIVE" It means drive 100 or 125 mph. WHEN THE SUN GOES DOWN, YOU CAN MAKE IT, MAKE IT GOOD IN A LAY-BY It refers to having sex.
