Their first two albums (this is from their debut in 2006), were MASSIVE in britain where they are from. Huge cultural significance here, the biggest since Oasis a decade before and nothing has come close since
@oceaux2392
@oceaux2392 2 года назад
Yeah, very similar to Oasis (not necessarily musically) in the sense that they defined an era for a generation in the UK. They were the undisputed champions of that 2000s indie rock scene, the same way that Oasis ruled the Britpop era a decade before. Everything about them, the clothes, the sound, the lyrics just defined what that moment in culture was all about. There's an interview with Noel Gallagher where he's talking about what made Oasis special, he's says something like (paraphrasing) "Yeah the music is good, but what was really special is how the people took to us, they were behind us all the way, and Arctic Monkeys are the only band since that galvanised a generation in this country the same way that we did". I think AM lost their way a bit (as Oasis did), but that's what being a band is all about, exploring different sounds and styles, and it doesn't take away from what they've done before.

@@oceaux2392 Strokes were definitely the overall rulers of the indie rock movement with their debut kicking it off, but AM was undisputed in the UK.
@oceaux2392
@oceaux2392 2 года назад
@@moonillusions832 Yeah, fair point, I overlooked them perhaps, I wouldn't argue that. Although, Is This It and Room on Fire were 2001 and 2003, AM's debut album wasn't until 2006. There wasn't really an overlap between their respective peaks. I'd say The Strokes ruled the first half of the 2000s and AM ruled the second half. At least in the UK The Strokes weren't nearly s big while AM where at their peak. But, yeah, if you're talking about overall biggest band of that 2000s indie scene you could argue for The Strokes definitely, perhaps more-so because they started it all off really.

They've never been rock. They're indie. Rock from the UK is stuff like Queen, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden etc etc. Arctic Monkeys are more in the bracket of Snow Patrol, Bombay Bicycle Club, Gorillaz etc etc That's not to put any negative connotation towards indie music. Indie music is just as valid as any other style of music, but it isn't rock.

@@EnglishLad “ Indie” used to mean “ independent label” . Many bands start off as “ indie” but then sign to a major label, as Arctic Monkeys did. @EnglishLad
@EnglishLad 2 года назад
@@raymo6795 Ok I'll level with you. They're obviously a band of signed professional musicians. What I was trying to get across was that Arctic Monkeys are not quite heavy enough to be considered a rock band, in the same way Abercrombie and Fitch clothing is a little too hipster to be considered "grungy". Maybe "alternative" would be a better word to describe their genre.
@raymo6795

@@EnglishLad …Agreed Callum.Since the late 80s.I always favored the more cutting edge bands. We called them “ indie” or “college”or “ alternative “. It really all just meant out of the main stream.Many of these bands caught on to the “ mainstream “, bands like REM and U2 and Live, were bands only heard on college radio stations, but they found a commercial following and signed with a big label. These bands were great, but I somehow lost respect for them. I guess there was a desire to enjoy something that was not popular, but when it became popular, I did not like it any more…weird. Okay, I a rambling, maybe there is a point , I am not sure what it is….The Arctic Monkeys are good… Cheers Callum✌️

The music video for "When the sun goes down" was filmed at park hill flats in Sheffield, just behind the train station. Arctic monkeys came from Parsons cross area that's a few miles away from the city centre. Words like "Mardy bum" is what a mother from Yorkshire would say to her sulking child.The closest "English" word to "Mardy" would be "Sulking", and "Owt" is "Anything" and "Summat" is "Something". Summat and Owt have old English roots while Mardy is of old Norse origin

It's difficult to define "garage" style music - other than with synonyms like 'raw' - but i'm happy that you all are comfortable using the term - because there is a lot of garage style music that you haven't yet reacted to - but that i hope you will someday - including - the Black Keys, Kings of Leon, the Raconteurs, & Royal Blood. Best group of the last 20 years imho. Their first two albums (the first especially) captured a moment in time perfectly. Their early music, written when they were 17-20, was about the nightlife and the life of a young man on the town. I was 18 when it came out and as you can imagine, it spoke to me and my friends like nothing else. Their later stuff is different but equally fun. I’d highly recommend “a certain romance” and “505”. But there are dozens more That will get mentioned too.

The song is about prostitutes working the red light district of Sheffield in the UK (the city the Arctic Monkeys are from), and some of the less desirable 'clients' they have to deal with (the 'scummy' men) who'd threaten, abuse and rob them. I went to college in Sheffield a couple of years before the Arctic Monkeys broke through and one of my classes was in a building on the edge of the red light district and in the dark winter early evenings you'd see the 'girls of the night' on the street corners being approached and harrassed by questionable guys in cars who'd treat them as something less than human. It was tragic to witness and Alex Turner captures it brilliantly in this song.

You've started from the debut album so you kinda get to go on the journey and see how their art developed over the years. Next song also from the 1st album should be "i bet you look good on the dancefloor". That was the song that launched them all across the world.

Lived in Sheffield worked on the edge of the city centre in a call centre. Hes right it does change when the sun goes down. Hookers plied thier trade literally right outside our building all the guys working there got propositioned at one time or another. Thing is the red light district stretched from the police and law courts to the hospital. A nurse friend told me she look out of the window and see guys leaving the maternity ward get into their cars and pick up a girl. But yep it definitely changed when the sun went down. Around 4 in winter about 10 in summer. Might be more developed 22 years on.

The Arctic Monkeys rabbit hole is huge and totally worth going down! Since you guys are new to them I'd HIGHLY recommend listening to their song Do I Wanna Know. I can assure you guys you'll love it. And by the way yes, the Arctic Monkeys are always about the groove, I'm glad Brad enjoyed this song so much right off the bat.

A band you definitely need to go deep down the rabbit hole with. Best British band of the 21st Century. So, so many bangers. I'd recommend going through their stuff chronologically to fully appreciate how their sound developed over the years. First 2 albums are similar, 3rd album a darker sound and the 4th was another complete gear shift. But those 2 albums (Humbug & Suck It And See) meant they were basically free to do what they want. The 5th AM (the best in my opinion) is just perfect and then it's another monumental shift on Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. Also worth checking out Alex Turner's other band The Last Shadow Puppets

This is about Broomhall, Sheffield, where (in the 80's anyway) the ladies of the night were to be seen many street corners, scantily clad no matter what the air temperature was, and it was often fucking freezing. They were some of them nice looking girls and they would say 'are you looking for business love', but you could see the space between their eyes. The Yorkshire ripper was caught near there about that time.

England has had some very good, creative Indie and Alternative rock groups in the past decade or so. Lots of them out there. Interpol and Metric (Canada) too. Check out Bloc Party too! Great band and fun concert. Seen them here in Austin, TX at the SWSX festival years back. They always have groups like these and other underground and non mainstream stuff. Alternative hip hop groups too.

I love these guys. I bought this album while wasting time at a record store when it came out while waiting on my gf to get out of work. It stayed in my cd player for almost 3 years. That album turned both of us into huge AM fans. 1st band we have ever traveled to go see. When I need comfort music I turn to this album.

Yes, do more Arctic Monkeys! Any of these: I Bet You Look Good on the Dance Floor, Still Take You Home, From the Ritz to the Rubble, The View From the Afternoon, A Certain Romance, Brianstorm, 505, Do Me a Favour, Teddy Picker, This House is a Circus. The stuff from the AM album is good too, but figured most people would be recommending from that one. I'm personally more of a fan of their earlier stuff since it's a little more raw.

I looove the Arctic Monkeys., especially their early stuff which includes an EP "Who The Fuck are Arctic Monkeys", two albums "Whatever People Say I Am, That's what I'm Not" and "Favourite Worst Nightmare" and so many stray B-sides from that era there is another good album there. That early stuff is all gloriously raw, so if your game for more of that look there. I'd recommend "From The Ritz To The Rubble" "The View from the Afternoon". "Vampire is a bit Strong, but". and maybe for something more tame "A Certain Romance" or Mardy Bum". With the HUMBUG album they get more experimental. I guess "Dance Little Liar" is my favourite there. Skip to the AM album which is very good but more stylized. Also, acoustic Arctic Monkeys is very nice and easy to find on YT.
