There’s an extra verse when he sings it live: She runs back down the hallway and through the bedroom door She reaches for the pistol kept in the dresser drawer Tells the lady in the mirror, "He won't do this again 'Cause tonight will be the last time, she'll wonder where he's been"
Just be careful if you're getting these songs on RU-vid. I've seen numerous reactions to "The Dance" where it wasn't actually Garth singing, but some other guy covering it (but these reactors, not familiar with Garth's voice, didn't know any better).
Last verse She runs back down the hallway And through the bedroom door She reaches for the pistol Kept in the dresser drawer Tells the lady in mirror He won't do this again 'Cause tonight will be the last time She'll wonder where he's been.
Garth was and is something special. Once in a lifetime kinda thing. Essentially was the 90s version of Elvis, or the Beatles. He was the biggest star on the planet, regardless of genre. Outselling Madonna, MJ, etc combined. Even people who never liked country, or listened to it at all loved Garth.
Did you just compare Garth Brooks to the Beatles? Really? I mean... yeah, he was a superstar as far as country goes, but I'm pretty sure he didn't change the landscape of all the way the Beatles or Elvis did. Come on now.
@@bearhall4919 You must not have been around in the 90s to see it. Yeah, he was as super as a superstar could be. And for the record, i didn't imply that he was revolutionary, or changed the landscape of music (although you could argue that he did that for country music), just that he was an absolutely insanely massive superstar the likes of which we hadnt seen since the Beatles or Elvis.
Yeah,... I get that. At the time - being a Black guy in Southern California - I listened just about everything EXCEPT for County. My roommate was a dude from Minnesota and he and his girlfriend were huge Country fans. Besides for a few earlier crossover songs this was the first Country music I'd listen to.
@@dbsagacious I was there and what you say may go for the US (I wouldn't know) but not for Europe and probably not worldwide, unlike all the big names you mentioned. Around here he was just a really tiny 'star' with one modest Mtv hit, this one, even at the time most people here wouldn't have heard his name.
Missing the last verse: She runs back down the hallway To the bedroom door She reaches for the pistol Kept in the dresser drawer Tells the lady in the mirror He won't do this again Cause tonight will be the last time She'll wonder where he's been
Oh yeah, here's another one I have to watch out-of-sequence. Garth Brooks was, as far as I'm concerned, a Certified Rock Star back in the 90's. So many great tunes and such an explosive live performer. 👍🤘😃
@@laudanum669 Both are very talented. Only about a 4th of singers sound as good live as they do on the radio or even less both of them can just sing very well period
A buddy of mine(both of us are metalheads) went to a Garth Brooks concert years ago. With this girl he liked. He told me: "I do NOT like country music. But GODDAMN if Garth Brooks isn't one of the BEST concerts I have EVER seen!" Matter of fact, he went to see him again, when he returned to town. Alone that time. LOL. 🤘
One of the nicest performers I've ever had the chance of meeting. Back in 08 or 09 i was working at Staples Center and he played 5 shows in two nights and all the proceeds went to the Los Angeles County Firefighters
Y'all should listen to Friends In Low Places. It's another great and well-known Garth Brooks song! It's got a lighter vibe than the drama of Thunder Rolls
I spent the fall and winter of '90-'91 in a tent listening to Country in the Persian Gulf and got well acquainted with some Garth Brooks and other country artists that I wouldn't voluntarily have listed to. Admittedly, some of it was quite good and Garth Brooks had a lot to do with my acceptance of the genre. Back stateside in '91, he released another album that had the 'funny' song "Papa Loved Mama" which dealt with cheating in a very different matter. That one is worth a listen. No one could make that same song today without being cancelled.
Garth is very charismatic. He does admit that Kiss is one of his inspirations. He knows how to get a crowd behind him. Try listening to Friends in Low Places!
BEST music reaction team out there, they actually listen to the song instead of breaking in every few seconds to listen to themselves talk! I've been listening for awhile, I just subscribed.
I actually considered this a country crossover song when I first heard it. I mean, hard to see it in 2022, but back then the heavier guitar and the licks kind of gave it that rock feel.
Gotta hear “the dance” they played it at my grandmothers wake. Then 2 years ago again at my cousins wake. It’s such a powerful song!!! You both will love it!!
Per Songfacts There's a line about thunder rolling in the song. Garth had been listening to that song - he'd been listening to stuff that (producer) Allen Reynolds had given him. He came in and said, 'What if we write a song about somebody who's cheating on his wife, and every time he does it, the thunder rolls.' And I kind of laughed. Similar to "Friends In Low Places," this song has an extra verse that Brooks would include in live performances. Unlike "Friends...," the extra verse in this case adds a darker tone to the song - the wronged woman goes to get a gun to kill her cheating husband. To make the song commercially viable, that verse was left out.
This was my favorite song as a kid! When it came on on the radio whilst it was raining it was epic. Garth lived near where I grew up. I'm not sure if he still does or not. My mom and me were shopping for furniture at a furniture store in Tulsa, OK one time and he walked in with his kids. He was also shopping for bedroom furniture for them. The employees were losing their minds. We walked past him sheepishly but didn't talk to him because we didn't want to bother him. He has a great catalog of music.
Garth is a country western super star but he was a fairly big crossover star into pop and rock charts. There’s a definite rock n roll vibe in Brooks’ music, though.
It's true that it's his voice that makes it "country". All that stuff about thunders and so forth was talking about the relationship can have clashes and so forth. Esp. the girl knowing he was cheating.
Love that you guys did this. Btw congrats on the pregnancy 💞 you guys should do the songs papa loved mama and rodeo from garth brooks too. P.S. you need to hear this song with the 3rd verse where she has enough of the cheating, So much better haha 😆💙
This song always reminds me of high school. There was a hip-hop/R&B radio station that all of a sudden started playing this song, and only this song, for about a week straight. The thunder would roll out at the end and roll right into the beginning of the song again. Turns out the station was transitioning into a country station so they played this instead of having dead air.
After Grunge took over, I discovered Garth Brooks, I now own every CD he ever put out, And he will forever be the BEST concert I have ever seen, and I seen all the 80's rock, metal, pop. Garth knows how to put on a concert.
Ah, my top favorite country song of all time! I definitely recommend listening to one of the live versions that has the third verse. It's very powerful and tells more of the story.
This song reminds me of my young childhood. My mom's best friend was a stay at home mom, so my mom paid her to watch me during the day and she loved two music artists... Elvis Pressley and Garth Brooks.
There was a time that this song and/or video were banned from Country Music radio stations and TV because of its content. Also, there is a whole section missing from this version of the song where the wife gets a pistol and ends the relationship - thus the "banning" or being only played at certain hours of the day/night. Also, Martina McBride's "Independence Day" was also banned and/or played at certain times of the day because of its "controversial" content of the time it was released.
Great song and yes about him cheating on her, Garth was a hit with everyone and his music was selling like hotcakes . He just talented and showmanship to in concerts
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this.... but there is a 3rd verse that was banned. this song is actually about domestic violence. "She runs back down the hallway and through the bedroom door She reaches for the pistol kept in the dresser drawer Tells the lady in the mirror he won’t do this again ‘Cause tonight will be the last time, she’ll wonder where he’s been" In the video her eyes are all blacked up.
Garth has a lot of good music. He's one of the less RU-vid-friendly artists though (or at least his label is. No idea who makes those decisions). Don't be surprised if this one gets taken down.
Walmart owned the rights to all of his distribution deals, which he said is why he fell off of making new albums and focused more on live performances and adding to them. Also why he's not on any streaming
Definitely a heaviness. I always thought it would be cool if Metallica did a cover of this. Also, there's a 3rd verse that was taken out for radio play because the wife kills her husband.
Man anytime I see a reaction to Garth Brooks I am so dubious about even giving it a shot. It is next to impossible to find original Garth Brooks songs on RU-vid EVERYTHING is a cover. Kudos for finding an actual original Garth Brooks song and this is one of his absolute BEST.
My favorite Country singer (yes with a bit Rock) from that time. Need to listen to the long version of this song done sometime later. An extra verse that makes it a bit darker.
Garth's songs are so well written and the chord progressions/melodies are always so interesting and complex, from Rodeo to Standing Outside the Fire, to The Thunder Rolls, they all have a unique vibe. One of the complaints of today's music is that they use the same simple chords/melodies over and over. Garth is arguably the greatest musician of the last century.
Garth Brooks is a country singer. This is a country song. The video to “ The Thunder Rolls” has been banned from country video channels in the 90’s, because of graphic nature of domestic abuse against the wife by the husband and their child witnesses this. It was highly controversial in the time.
He had one more verse that he plays live that tells the rest of the story. "She runs back down the hallway through the bedroom door, she reaches for the pistol kept in her dresser drawer, tells the lady in the mirror 'He won't do this again cause tonight will be the last time she'll wonder where he's been" The music video doesn't include that verse either but it does show the verse in action.
Ya'll need to see the ACTUAL MUSIC VIDEO starring Garth Brooks as the Husband. The video was banned from TNN RU-vid and a few other sources, it's hard to find but it's out there (I have it on Laser disk, that's how old I am). The video is so powerful, Garth Brooks himself wants it removed... odd, since he is the husband in the video. The video starts with the husband in bed with the Mistress... and she wants him to stay but he says "get real, I'm a family man" As he's driving home in the storm it shows his wife and little daughter (maybe 6 or 7yo) waiting up for him... the wife has a huge shiner (black eye)... and as the video goes on, the mistress calls the wife and tells her of the affair. When he gets home, there's a confrontation and he backhands her sending her flying, the daughter sees all this and he turns towards his daughter and that's when the wife pulls out a gun and shoots him. This is all in the video, and none of this was in the shortened cleaned up version of the song you reacted to. I highly suggest finding and watching the video... Garth Brooks himself starred in it and wanted it taken down. Shows how old I am, this video used to play all the time but in today's world, we have to protect everyone from seeing it.
What was funny is that when I was growing up and this song came out, they couldn't play the video on tv until after after midnight because of the extra verse or how dark it got at the end of the song. Still an amazing hit, and many others to follow. To me, Garth Brooks is like the Billy Joel of country music.
You actually got the real Garth!.. most utube garth stuff are fake. On utube it's best to watch a live stage performance.. I love the live with 3rd verse... audience goes crazy.
I seen Garth in concert very time he came in my area where I live. You need to listen to his whole catolog of his music 🎶. This man was and is still a great performer watch him live you will see where I am coming from. You definitely get your money's worth with Garth Brooks. ☮️ Out and God Bless.
@@TubetakerBHV Since Europe is a big place, it's hard to make that big of a statement, but Garth was pretty damn popular in England, and HUGE in Ireland
@@dbsagacious Did he ever played a single show in europe? I cant remember one. Im pretty sure he is realtivly unknown in Germany. No concerts, no airtime in the radio and Im not sure I ever saw him in german television. Same for France, Spain and Italy. But hey.. if the irish loved him he must have something. ;)
That is absolutely untrue. Wow like wildly untrue. It is funny how all of the biggest records are held by country artists though. Garth Brooks has sold more live concert ticket than any performer of any genre in all of history. That's because his concerts were generally dirt cheap, And even when he had front row seating available he would purposely not fill the very 1st row and then when the concert would start he would instruct everybody in the farthest row back to come up and take the front row, because that's just the kind of guy he is. But he does hold that record for sure. Toby Keith makes more money from merchandise sales than any performer in any genre. at any time in history. That is almost exclusively due To his chain of bars that he opened worldwide. Jimmy Buffett is an insanely close 2nd place to him. And George Strait has more number one hit songs than any artist, of any genre, at any point in history. He's pushing 80 chart toppers at this point and the man is still performing.
Garth Brooks comes in second to me to Johnny Cash as the best storyteller in music history. My favorite of his story songs is Beaches of Cheyenne. I'm also going to throw out some songs a lot of people will skip over mentioning. Much Too Young (to Feel This Damn Old), That Summer, Standing Outside the Fire.
When Garth was younger he used to listen to some rock bands like KISS besides country bands. Garth co-written the thunder rolls. That's where the heavy sounding comes from. Take care
The music video for this was pretty epic. Like watching a mini movie. He started the crossover thing and then it went to far. Very few did it as well as he did.
Well if you want to check out more country I have a couple of suggestions. It's newer stuff and probably covering a few other genres as well. Turnpike Troubadours - Good Lord Lorie, and every other song they sing, huge energy and a bunch of strings!! Hayes Carll - Drunken Poets Dream, and I really like most of his stuff as well. And last but by no means least The Corb Lund Band - Rye Whiskey, Gettin' Down on the Mountain, they're Canadian but I love them!! And I lied when I typed Canadian I thought of another one, Fred J Eaglesmith - Water in the Fuel, Wilder than her, Alcohol and Pills. I hope you enjoy these, they're all great musicians!!
The extra verse that's not played on radio and only played in live performances: "She runs back down the hallway To the bedroom door She reaches for the pistol Kept in the dresser drawer Tells the lady in the mirror He won't do this again Cause tonight will be the last time She'll wonder where he's been!"
Love me some Garth! I've got a suggestion for y'all. Assuming you haven't heard this one. My husband and me think Lex will absolutely flip for Mother's Finest, Baby Love off the Another Mother Further album. BTW , y'all are our you -tube play list! Thanks so much!!
