Love the song, love all those artists paying tribute. That was Lisa Marie Presley at 2:53, which reminds me..now you need to hear Elvis sing it. However, in that video the song title is "Run On". Elvis & Johnny were friends all the way back to their early Sun Studios days in the 50's. Both did justice to this fascinating song.💙☮

@@warrenhammonds1093 You're welcome! And btw, I didn't even notice the similarities to "All Shook Up" but now that you mentioned it, I don't know how I ever missed it. I do love Elvis's version. As usual Lex NAILED IT! According to Wikipedia… "God's Gonna Cut You Down" (also known as "God Almighty's Gonna Cut You Down", "God's Gonna Cut 'Em Down", "Run On" and "Sermon") is a traditional American folk song. It was first recorded by the Golden Gate Quartet in 1946 and first issued in 1947 by the Jubalaires.” The Video was made 3yrs after Cash’s Death, and, Filmed in B&W, features dozens of well known Musicians, Actors, & Celebrities.

The moral of the song? I think it's that no matter who you are, big or small, in the end you will be judged by God. He doesn't care who you are, only what you have done. Can you imagine what had to go on to get all of these artists and celebrities to be in this video? Did you imagine he could still have that effect on the industry? "It's Mr. Cash on the phone. He wants you to be in his new video." "The Man in Black? That Mr. Cash?" "Yep." "Ask him when and where. I'll be there."

This song is about Godless people or those estranged from God (midnight riders, gambler, rambler, and the backbiter) trying to cheat death (You can run on for a long time) but eventually we all die (sooner or later God's gonna cut you down). Anyhow, that's what I get out of it. It's a powerful message and reminder that no matter how high and mighty you may think you are, you are going to return to dust again like everyone else in the world. Johnny Cash was near death at the time and I guess that gave him a lot of time to ponder on things. If you really want cry like a baby, review his song "Hurt". I was tearing up like a baby listening to that one.

So many faces instantly recognisable, but not so instantly able to put a name to. Though Lisa Marie Presley was there, and it was her father who also recorded a version of this song. In a recent documentary, it was told that when Johnny was 12 years old, his older brother Jack, died tragically in a saw-mill accident. Johnny's father supposedly said to Johnny that, 'the wrong son died' and it's this tragic loss is what mapped out his troubled life. Johnny Cash, so highly respected from all corners of the music world 💜

It's an old, traditional folk song. Nobody knows who wrote it. First recorded in 1946 by The Golden Gate Quartet. . . . .

The irony of the video, is all the artists in the vid are who this song is about.

I'm feeling there's no point in the future, because when death comes, everything I ever did will be erased and forgotten. I guess being here now is all there is.

Run on by Moby is the same song released previously. And yes a "Traditional song"

Great choice and as always great reaction. Cash always has been able to take a song that's not his, and make it his own. His voice is so iconic. Back when I was a kid in the late '60s, the only two albums I owned was an Elvis and a Johnny Cash album that my parents had, but never played. I wore em out.

Love your genuine reactions to artists/songs. This one too. Apart from the irony that celebrities are the group most in need of learning humility - i like your analysis: is God's wrath death or learning humility? I prefer to believe that latter. And i do love that you immediately recognized Iggy Pop. Thanks for posting this.

I listen and watch videos to a wide variety of music, and when I see you two pop up as suggested, I gotta watch. Great video and keep doing what y'all are doing. I think JC was saying you can think you're the biggest and greatest, but God is going to let you know you are not the one. I think the coolest thing about both of you is giving honest, first impression, and thoughts on different types of music. Love it!

1:49 Lex is right, it's not a Johnny Cash original. God's Gonna Cut You Down" (also known as "God Almighty's Gonna Cut You Down", "God's Gonna Cut 'Em Down", "Run On" and "Sermon") is a traditional American folk song. It was first recorded by the Golden Gate Quartet in 1946 and first issued in 1947 by the Jubalaires. Since then, the track has been recorded in a variety of genres, including country, folk, alternative rock, electronic and black metal. The lyrics warn evildoers that they cannot avoid God's eventual judgment.[4] As "God's Gonna Cut You Down", it was performed by Odetta on Odetta Sings Ballads and Blues (1956), Johnny Cash on the posthumously released American V: A Hundred Highways (2006). Marilyn Manson also used this title for a non-album single in 2019. As "Run On", it has been recorded by Elvis Presley and Tom Jones, and The Blind Boys of Alabama. The song has been covered by many other artists. A version by Bill Landford & the Landfordaires from 1949 was later sampled heavily for the 1999 song "Run On" by Moby.

I think the video is after Cash died but that song is one that he wrote and sung before he died.
