My mother loved Elvis and always wanted to see him in concert but raising kids and everything she didn't get the chance, but she always thought that Tom Jones was a close second to Elvis. So, in 1979 I found out that Tom Jones was having a concert just 100 miles away and I got my mother two front row tickets for her birthday. My father refused to go because he said it would be just all crazy women there so my mother took a friend she worked with. When she got home, I never saw her smile so much in my life. For weeks she would dance around the house while playing his records. He also use to wear white scarfs and would wipe the sweat from his face and then toss them to the crowd. My mother said that he actually handed a scarf to her in the front row and didn't let go of it until he sang a couple lines of the song to her. My dad was so jealous, but refused to let it show. My mother had the scarf frames along with a picture of him. Tom Jones is still singing and is on "The Voice" in the United Kingdom" He is 81 years old and he still makes women weak in the knees.

What a lovely gift for your mum. What a great memory for her
@owenwadleigh4
@owenwadleigh4 2 года назад
@@malcolmhaynes1424 It was, when she got home she walked through the door and just started crying. I was so scared that something had happened, an accident or something, but she just came over and hugged me and said "Thank you so much, it was the best time of my life". When my mother was dying I told her that I would not let her die alone, but the doctors gave her enough pain medication so she was out and not suffering, but I had made CD's of her favorite music from Elvis, to other artists, to play softly in her room. I told my dad to get some rest because he was exhausted and hadn't slept in days. So I spent the night with her holding her hand. Just as the sun was coming up the next morning a Tom Jones song "The green green grass of home" started to play and I felt her hand hold mine just a bit tighter, she smiled and a tear ran down her face, and as the song ended she passed away. I will never forget that moment, it was if she was letting me know that she leaving but she was ok, it was so peaceful and that was the only movement she made all night. The nurse was there and I swear I could feel her soul pass through me. Even the nurse was in tears. I was so glad that I could do that for my mom to help her pass in peace.

I Will Never Fall In Love Again" is the one that showcases his voice and gets some people to tear up. But yeah, Tom Jones back in the day, was the U.K.'s answer to Elvis (and both men were also good friends). He had his own tv variety show for awhile and the ladies really went for this guy.

Funny that Lex mentions a casino, It was 53 years ago that Jones recorded the iconic “Tom Jones Live in Las Vegas” album from a performance at The Flamingo. At one point, he performed two shows a night in Las Vegas appearances. Jones first performed in Las Vegas at The Flamingo Hotel in 1967.

Tom was a Welsh coal miner who got "discovered" in '65. This was his first hit and it made him a star who got his own weekly TV show and continued to have a VERY long career. This song was written for another British singer, Cilla Black, and he just did the demo. The story is that she heard his demo and walked out of the recording studio because she was so impressed with it.

This was a way sped up version for TV it's about twice the speed he usually sings it.. You should try and find some videos of him singing Gospel and Blues he's amazing with those aswell! In fact Tom was best mates with ELVIS even spent a Holiday at Graceland with his wife and Elvis and Precilla Presley!! (he idolised Elvis and Elvis Idolised Tom! -Mutual respect for eachothers vocal/For given talent and gift and just natural ability to feel and sing not only these types of Songs but both Tom and Elvis sand so great Gospel, Blues, Soul etc). Tom is a very versatile singer. Even now in his 80s (as a judge on "The Voice UK" the other judges like 'Will.i.Am' and "Jennifer Hudson" the others etc, will get him to stand up and do a song from the chair or the stage acapella and Jennifer Hudson loves him She often sings Duets with Tom which are just Gold!! Either from their chairs or sometimes they'll get up and do a duet on the stage with her or whoever and he can STILL stay with Jennifer Hudson for power and Range on the duets he's truly a great singer! Not sure what other ones you checked out of his yet. Delilah (is a classic) Green Green Grass it Home (also a classic) There's loads. Maybe see if you can dig out some of his live performances from later in his career. He headlined Glastonbury I think a few years back played a whole set! But he's done some amazing studio duets and songs aswell blues and Gospel... 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Immediately before this performance in July of 1965 I had the great pleasure of seeing Tom here in my native Brooklyn do this at the old Brooklyn Fox theater. Tom then left the theater and either the next day or the same day did this performance. On the same bill that I saw was also The Temptations, a very young Patti LaBelle, Ben E. King, and The Ronettes. Those were really the days. I second the idea that his version of "I Who Have Nothing" is the best version I've ever heard. Better than Be E. King's or Shirley Bassey's.

I remember my mom went to see him in concert back in the 70's and she wore silver bell bottoms. 😆

Tom Jones is magnificent. Anything Tom Jones is good. Also he's sang with everybody from Janice Joplin to Crosby Stills and Nash and more. Ps his latest album went to #1 in Britain this year.

Sir Thomas Jones Woodward OBE just turned 82 and has had both hips replaced so he doesn't quite have the moves anymore but he's on a TV show in the UK and still has the voice...

I worked in a suit manufacturer for twenty-two years. Men didn't want to wear suits anymore. My dad was proud of good he looked in his suit. When he passed, his two suits rode around in my car for a long time before I finally stopped and put them into a donation box. He didn't want a funeral, so that was like his funeral for me when I let go of his suits. And finally, I accepted a lay-off from my job because men had decided they looked better with their pants falling off.

I don't normally like this style of music but I love me some Tom Jones. He has a lot of songs worth listening to.

If you are old enough to remember "Fresh Prince", you will remember that this is the song that Alphonso always played to dance "The Carlton". Funny stuff

The studio recording of this had guitarist Jimmy Page (pre-Led Zeppelin) on lead guitar, and (possibly) Andy White or Chris Slade on drums. Chris Slade would later be in "The Firm" with Jimmy Page, post-Led Zeppelin. Peace

So you all should check out this group called Scott Bradlee’s Post Modern Jukebox. It’s a rather large group because Scott picks different musicians and singers to interpret different songs. The gimmick is this: modern songs performed in older styles. So you got Hey Ya arranged as a doo wop song. Maroon 5’s Maps done Motown. RHCP’s Give It Away done Austin Powers style. The singers are really great. Start off with anything by Haley Rheinhardt. She does a great duet of Mad World with Puddles the Clown with the Golden Voice.

Recently finished Sit Tom's autobiography, and a very good read it was too. Tom was often squeezed into a mainstream role when his heart was always in blues, gospel and rock 'n' roll. My mom loved him. I remember she once said, "Tom Jones can sing anything." She was right. I suppose that was both a blessing and a curse.

I'm so glad my mom played this old school music in the car while growing up in the early 2000s. Sure I got sick of hearing much of it repeated often on her CDs but it has heavily impacted me when I grew up and opened myself up to just enjoying music period. Check out the album version, more complete than this live version. I'm always so impressed by the live performances from this era.
