Thanks for checking out our Led Zeppelin reaction. What Is And What Should Never Be was one of Lex's favorite songs from our recent live stream. A lot of people were complaining about how we react to too many Zep songs. Should this be the last one?

I'm not sure about the Mighty Zep..,anymore. When I was a kid I would wholeheartedly agree. Now, it seems like it doesn't age as well as some of the other ones they made ..Just seems repetitive -the chorus ,almost monotonous ...Maybe I'm just old and jaded..Maybe it is because they really have "borrowed" anything they could from other artists .Yeah, I know everybody does it but they take the cake. Like using the Spirit song on Stairway .. To me. it seems like a great baseball player taking steroids : unnecessary and says something about the person ..They are too good to have to cheat

@@markdraine3571 Is that why Spirit lost their court case against Led Zeppelin? "Stairway To Heaven" is a masterpiece, "Taurus" is, at most, a nice instrumental with a few bars that sound similar.

@lyndoncmp5751

Mark Draine, Spirit don't own those chords. They date back hundreds of years. Jimmy Page himself already played an opening almost identical to Stairway in 1968 when he was guest guitarist on a song called Ice Cream Dreams. He played this song in court. This predated Zeppelin going to America where they shared a bill with Spirit a few times. More importantly, Spirit never played Taurus live in 1968/69 so Zeppelin couldn't possibly have heard them play it.

I've watched a few of their videos and Brad acts like he has a wall because of previously listening to The Lemon Song. Rob was 19-20 years old when this album was cut, just a kid. And his horoscope is Leo, the lion. The hunter. A young horny kid during the free love period. Learn the histories Brad. Lots of men were jealous of Robert because of how their girlfriends reacted to "The Golden God." Besides the musicians being at the top of their abilities or talents, their gimmick was sex. And it worked.

Great choice. I hear what Lex is preaching, this song is like lounge jazz, hard rock, and a rap/funky part all rolled up into one song. This song, "Since I've Been Lovin' You", and "The Rain Song" are my three favorites from LZ. Songs that show that they admire other types of music and make an effort to compose music that way. Plus, some might be equals, but no one is better at emoting with their voice than Robert Plant.

Picture this. This album comes out in 1969-ish. By 1970 every teen in America has a home made surround sound system in their bedroom just to catch all the bouncing around the music does on this album. I personally built a 20 speaker system by scavenging every inch of speaker wire and speakers from every junkyard car I could find....built speaker towers out of old plywood and turned my bedroom in to Madison Square Garden. My dad cheered me on then went really really quiet as I went to plug the stereo in for the first time. He totally expected us to blow fuses or start a fire drawing all that juice. But we didn't. It was perfect. A wall of sound and when that music started bouncing from one side of the room to the other and the speakers were dancing....it was glorious. My dad hated the music but he loved the "engineering" of building a home made sound system so he let me blast my music as he went back to his garage and tinkered on his motorcycle. My poor mother threw up her hands and went to play cards with her friends up the street. Today's music will never inspire anyone to do anything like that. EVER.

I've done some Led Zeppelin songs at Karaoke before and when I did "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You", they said that everyone there got goose bumps. The same thing happened when I did that song "Lightning Crashes" from Live -- They said that they all got goose bumps. But here's a really interesting story relating to Prince. Back in 1983, a year after the "1999" album, I was at home by myself one day and was really bored. I saw the "1999" album laying around and decided to check it out. I remember hearing some of the songs on the radio -- "1999", "Little red Corvette", and "Delirious". It was a double album set. I started going through all of the songs and played some parts of each one to see what they were all like. Then I got to that song "Free", and it really touched me. Then I realized that there was more to him than I thought. So I stopped there and went back again and played more of each song, and listened to them more carefully. I got through the whole album (or I should say through both albums). And it blew my mind. I thought, "Wow! This guy is a musical genius". And there's only one other group I ever said that about since then... And that's Led Zeppelin. So I started really getting into it and singing along with the songs. And I went and got that self-titled album he did "Prince" that has "I Wanna Be Your Lover", and the other songs it has. And I got into it and started singing along to those songs, too. But Prince didn't come out with an album that year so I thought he had retired from music and that the "1999" album was it, his last album. But then I had a dream where I was standing in this backyard, and I looked over to my left, and I saw this garage that had been painted purple. Then I looked over to my right, and I saw Prince standing there and painting his house purple. And he said, "I have to hurry because it's going to rain pretty soon". Then he stopped and went inside. And then it started raining, and the rain was purple. Then about four months after that, the "Purple Rain" album came out. And I remembered that dream and realized that it was a prediction of the "Purple Rain" album. That still blows my mind when I think about that. And then I had another experience. Of course I was excited about it when the "Purple Rain" album came out because I thought he had retired from music and I didn't expect that. So I went and got the album and checked out each song to see what they were all like. But this time I played all the songs straight through. And it was so cool. The style and the music was all fresh and new and different. And then that same night, I had a dream that I was playing that song "The Beautiful One's". And in this dream, I was singing along to it, and I sang the whole song word for word, even though I only played that song that one time and didn't know all the words. That was so freaky.

Brad really doesn’t know good songs. This is definitely not his first time not in favor of a amazingly talented, classic, iconic band that nails it on basically every song. I only watch this RU-vid once in a while to see Lex enthusiasm for the greats.

Come on Brad, you've come a long way in a year but you got a wall up when it comes to Zeppelin, ever since your stairway to heaven reaction you took the cameramans angle and prematurely prejudged the band based on that, if that was a straight on waist up or above shot you'd have appreciated that song and the band much more than you did and do, look into the less mainstream tunes they have cuz there is so much to explore with these guys, heavy rock, ballad rock, blues, bluegrass, folk, psychedelic rock, and yes even country, unlike most bands they have music that can be played on just about every radio station, i know I lived it, Lex has got it down with these guys.

In the 70's we referred to songs like this as "trippy". Kind of how you feel on acid or mushrooms. Those drugs took you on trips or journeys you didn't plan. Just like these songs. Have no doubt, drugs had significant influence in that era's song writing. We had the advantage of being on the same drugs at the same time as the people that wrote the songs. We would be on the same drugs listening to the music as the composers were when they wrote said music. In Seattle in the late 60's and 70's the Seattle Center would have "Laserium" shows where they would play say the whole "Dark Side of the Moon" album in a theatre with a Laser show on the ceiling. We would go there just gacked up on shrooms, acid or mescaline and lay on the floor and "TRIP OUT" for an hour or two. It's amazing that the City of Seattle didn't catch on to the purpose of "Laserium" being for kids to trip out on hallucinogenics en mass in public. It went on for years. Thank you my ignorant elders. I am now 66 years weird.

I enjoy the almost sleepy vocals Robert gives us here. Cold & snowy in my area today. Looking forward to an afternoon nap with my youngest puppy & my purringest cat in my lap. I strained the muscles in my neck last week & have been nursing the pain ever since.

I seriously thought you had checked this out already, because you've done a good job at uncovering the LZ "stones" that have had significant radio play. I'm glad you are continuing your dive into their music. It's such a satisfying swim! Edited: I just read the description saying people are complaining it's too much LZ. I personally don't think that's possible! 😁 But if that's what the masses want, I think you should continue to explore their catalog on your own. Lex seems to genuinely enjoy them, so don't deny yourself the pleasure.

A song about an affair Robert was having with his wife's sister. This song and this album emphasized an essential element in Zep's musical formula: "Light" and "Shade." Musical drama, contrasts, transitions. Perfected on this album, expanded upon in future albums.
