This track is a great example of Zeppelin's signature tempo shift, a device that adds depth and texture to several of their classics. They lull you at the start with a tender lyrical guitar or Plant vocal, and then to use La's phrase, they hit you upside the head with a controlled explosion of Page and Bonham. You can hear it in Stairway, Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You, Over the Hills and Far Away, and Ramble On.
After 50 years of this great music its a notable thing to say that if any band could duplicate the sound they would. Nobody has or can because each was a master at their position. Thanks
Robert Plants' vocals always amaze me. He comes in and out... from smooth to wailing. His timing...his pauses and then the return , right back to set the tempo of the song composition. He's the Master of Rock vocalists. Another favorite Song of mine by LZ 🔥
Yes Julie ❗ I often use the word " Magnificent" to describe them too. Isn't it a treat to watch these young REACTORS get turned onto bands from this Rock Era🎵 and love them just as we do❓
One of the best, most creative and original lead guitarist on the planet. (Eff Eddie and his fast scales) The most versatile bass guitarist, great on bass, keyboards, and other stringed instruments. Best rock drummer. Seriously, if you had a rock band who would you rather have than John B? Hands down, the best vocalist frontman. Not clownish like Mick. Better vocals than any other. Plus, he could play the hell out of the harmonica. But the way they meshed together is what made them remarkable.
Living Loving Maid was always played on the radio following Heartbreaker, there was no pause. As the album cut directly flows together. No pause. When you react to Heartbreaker continue into Living loving maid, as that is how it is meant to be. They go together. So react back to back no pause.
There were several times when Zep tracks had no pause between. They did this on Black Mountain Side/Communication breakdown on the first album, too. The reason is interesting. Jimmy Page was focused on creating album-oriented rock - not singles. He wanted to entice the listener to listen to entire album sides. He also wanted DJs at rock radio stations to play multiple songs....to get caught napping when once song transitioned to the next, so they could get more air time....which worked. I also have read that Jimmy deliberately put the wrong track length on the typed info they gave DJs on the pressings of the albums they gave to the radio stations, deliberately telling them a track was 3 minutes long when it was really 5 or 6 minutes+ long. Jimmy understood the music business so well, and he set up Zeppelin to win.
I knew a guy that considered himself a Zeppelin expert. One day we were talking and he mentioned he could never figure out why the radio always played Living Loving Maid after Heartbreaker. I answered “because that’s the way the album is and they are meant to be paired together”. He said no, such and such song is after Heartbreaker. We went round and round for a while when he mentioned his collection was not vinyl, but cassette. It turns out the record company had changed the order of songs on Led Zeppelin II so they would fit the cassette better and avoid too much blank tape at the end of one of the sides. He was totally blown away when he realized this. So, there still may be some people out there that have no idea LLM follows Heartbreaker. By all means the two should be played together when these guys get to doing their reaction to Heartbreaker.
Correct.. many reactions split them into two different tracks.. keep in mind this was the album rock era. The intention was to have both played back to back with no interruptions….
Enjoy the way you guys do complete album reviews. Alot of time and work on your part with honest and appreciative commentary. You're keeping the music alive for the younger generation and keeping us, the older generation who grew up with these sounds, stay young. So happy to see your appreciation and keeping these tunes relevant. Thank you Airplay Beats!
the last section of this song is some of the most powerful rock music ever played- remember fiirst hearing it back when it came out, could nor quite believe what i was hearing- the guitar riffing, the chukka chukka part and robert plant singing all over it- amazing stuff- the beatles will always be the most important group of all time, their originality, their great song,s, 2 great singers, their cultural importance , the list goes on, but zeppelin as a peforming band, were the greatest- those early recorded live shows they did in the uk were just amazing
When I was a kid, I was just bottom-line blown away by Zeppelin. It wasn't until many years later that I began to understand why. It was the great variety in their playing and writing skills, an ability to take you away musically and narratively to far away cerebral landscapes, a power and passion that few imbued their music with, and just the best improvisational virtuosos this world has ever seen. From the start, Page enthralled me and was responsible for getting me and millions of others to pick up a guitar. In learning his songs, it's then that you really get a feel for his creative genius. Musically, compositionally, and productively, there are few like him.
One of my favorites from that album. Christmas time 1969, I vividly remember lying on the couch, listening to this by the all blue lights of our beautiful tree. I felt transported to some sort of Faerie (old spelling) Land. The album had only been out less than 2 months & I was wearing it out. So was everyone else I knew. I was 16. So long ago but Zeppelin still transports me. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert 3 times. They were astounding. Wish I had a time machine & could whisk you back with me to experience what I did. I'm thrilled that you both really like & appreciate them. Much love from Kentucky. 💙☮💙☮💙☮💙☮💙☮💙
Wow. That’s awesome we started listening to it around Christmas time as well. Great story. Thank you for sharing. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
Love it!! This is absolutely my favorite Zep song. When I was in High School I fancied myself in love with one Robert Plant!! My, My, My, My, My, My YEAH
Back in the day, at high school parties whenever this song came on, we'd all sit right in front of the speakers in the room and listen to the atmospherics of this great track.....the sound would jump around the room. This is a perfect example of Zep "Light and Shade."
I get sad sometimes thinking how we took this music for granted, we thought it would go on forever. Sadly, it had gone down so much to not even be the same animal.
Standard way I dance to Zeppelin is my long hair lol just hanging down in front of my face and I hop into a skip straight into a twirl and twirl and twirl 🌺💜
So good to hear John Paul Jones get some appreciation! His bass playing is so good. Not to mention he played mandolin, piano, organ, etc whenever needed.
I have been listening to this song for at least 30 years and each and every time I hear it , it evokes the same feeling . There is a beautiful wistful , “ far and away “ vibe . It’s magical .
How great is it that you are doing full albums track by track to all the greats from the past? This second album by LZ is my favorite. As you said a bit less bluesy, not that I’m against the blues, this sound was them finding their lane, at least IMHO. Can’t wait to hear The Lemon Song. 🔥✌️
Hey guys. You hit on one of my favorite Zeppelin songs with this one. Great dynamics here. I love the way it starts off so softly with the bass carrying most of the vibe and then the guitar and drums come in just as Robert begins to amp up his vocal. So glad you are discovering and enjoying this great music. Peace.
Great reaction. As usual! Zeppelin is one of those bands where even though most of their music was very different song to song, you still knew it was Zeppelin from the first couple of measures. A band with a distinct sound, but pretty diverse musically.
It's no wonder why Led Zeppelin couldn't go on after the loss of John Bonham. Considered the greatest drummer of all time for damn good reason ! Magnificence behind a drum kit for sure.
You know, I have learned and appreciated so much about Zep since I started watching your show. I was in darkness, but now I see the light. This tune is insane. Then I heard The Lemon Song. You guys ROCK. Thanks and take care.
You guys hit all the beats…short succinct intro same way every time, reaction with minimal pauses only to add perspective to actual thoughts, and then a post reaction breakdown with TWO OF YOU, signing off exactly the same way every time. No wonder you guys are the top reactors on RU-vid.
The second album was written and recorded while on tour; whatever city they were in, they'd find a studio somewhere to lay down tracks and would travel with the master tapes. Some of the riffs that came about during improvisation in concert would get added to various songs from this album. It was a challenge to record this way. They said that the studio quality varied greatly from city to city but they had no choice and did the best they could. At one point, Jimmy said he'd lost confidence in the album because he'd heard it so much in its incohesive form while on tour, that he was concerned he was getting sick of it and wouldn't be able to produce a good album. The song itself was about the affair Robert was having, or had already had, or wanted to have (I'm not sure of the timeline) with his sister in law.
The first album was recorded in 30 hours, in between their first two tours. The second album was recorded on the road in studios when they could fit sessions in, taking tapes with them from city to city.
The saddest thing I can think of in rock and roll is Bohnams death before Led Zeppelin truly peaked....can you believe how good they are, but they never peeked, Im sad about that every day
Just found your channel a few days ago. Once I saw you doing Zeppelin I instantly subscribed. Great reactions it's so great that you're doing Zeppelin's full albums and in order. I think you'll be blown away by there progression and diversity. The greatest band of all-time! Zeppelin 2 was the first album I bought. I put it on my turntable for 1 month straight and didn't listen to anything else. I was blown away never heard anything like them. Then I went in order after that. Keep up the great reactions!
Another way they were ahead of their time and changed the industry was their manager. He fought for the artists and changed how they got paid, how much and that they did. Prior to him many times bands would get screwed for live performances
You asked about the woman singing "Stairway to Heaven". You might consider reviewing "Dreamboat Annie" studio album. Also CrosbyStillsNashand Young. "Wooden Ships" and "4 Dead in Ohio" about the massacre at Kent St U.
I’m so glad you guys are doing the entire catalog in order. I’m 38 and Zeppelin is my favorite band with no close second. You’re in for a treat. Keep up the awesome content.
There is an early live performance of this on youtube that sounds just like the record, except they do a little improvising without messing with the vibe.
The album was produced while they were on tour because when page was with d yard birds. The yard birds broke up in the middle of a contract with atlantic Records in which page Was responsible for the contract? To produce 3 albums within 2 years.. When do yard birds broke up page was still liable?. So he immediately formed led Zeppelin in not only. Produce the albums on time but later. Dropped Atlantic Records and takes informed his own producing company called Swan song.
