That weekend might just be the quintessence of the 1980s. June 8, 1984 is when Ghostbusters and Gremlins both debuted at the box office. June 9, 1984 is what I call a "power week" on the Billboard Hot 100. My criteria for a "power week" are at least one of the following: 1. At least four songs peaking in the Top 10 2. At least six songs peaking in the Top 20 3. At least 10 songs peaking in the Top 40 June 9, 1984 meets the first criterion, and only narrowly misses the other two. These are the songs that peaked in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 on June 9, 1984: "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper (#1) "Oh Sherrie" by Steve Perry (#3) "Sister Christian" by Night Ranger (#5) "The Heart Of Rock & Roll" by Huey Lewis & The News (#6) "Breakdance" by Irene Cara (#8) "My Ever Changing Moods" by The Style Council (#29) "Love Will Show Us How" by Christine McVie (#30) "What Is Love?" by Howard Jones (#33) "Whisper To A Scream (Birds Fly)" by Icicle Works (#37) Even the not-Top 10 hits on that list are classics. That week kick-started the summer of 1984, which I consider to be the absolute best period of music in the 1980s, and possibly even in the entire era of post-World War II pop culture. Speaking of "Oh Sherrie" anecdotes, I have two: 1. My lasting memory of this song came during a scary circumstance as well, namely, my first memory of a severe thunderstorm. My mother and I dropped my older brother off at the movie theater to see Ghostbusters with his friends just as the storm blew in and knocked out power to the theater for a few minutes. It also flooded the roads so bad that water had somehow splashed onto some of the electrical components under the hood of the car, causing the lights on the dashboard to behave irregularly. Oddly enough, the radio was unaffected, and "Oh Sherrie" began to play just as the storm began to wind down. (I also remember hearing "Borderline" by Madonna, and even "Drive" by The Cars for the very first time.) 2. When I was in college, I knew a girl from the Atlanta area whose father knew Sherrie.

Class of ‘89 here. Great times!!! Miss it even more now. 90’s were good but the music changed quickly. Some of it ok. But a lot of it I didn’t care for. But it was a bit more relaxed than the worries of the 80s…nuclear war, AIDS, etc, and a good time to be a young adult. Yes things were still happening, but generally so much less worry than today. Far better than after 2001. We lived at the end of golden age for childhood. Keep rock’in that mullet!

Always loved this song. Very vivid memories of my last summer / free moments being a kid before things changed in my life. Family fell apart. On the beach, helping make sandcastles with younger sibling, a glorious summer day. White puffy clouds, warm breeze, boaters, swimmers. Living was easy for the moment. All was good. I felt i just figured out how to be a kid just before puberty started. And someone had their radio on and this was the latest hit playing. You know how some memories are a clear marker of a time or chapter in your life? A bookend to childhood. Oh Sherrie is that for me. And things seemed so much simpler then. Thanks for the reaction.

The 80's was a vibe. In 1980 Video games were just gaining a foothold. The computer was still just for business and super expensive. Cable TV along with MTV was hitting a stride. ACDC, The Police , Rush and Van Halen were huge. Glam Pop and Parachute pants. By the late 80's Grunge stunned the word and Guns n' Rose's made one last rock n' roll stand. Rock's not dead but it is not the same. Great decade!...and let's not get talking about the 90's. The 70's, 80's and 90' s have to be some of the best decades ever for cultural, musical and human change in America!

It was about 1980. Steve said that Sherrie's grandparents were his mom's neighbors, and he would see Sherrie there. He had to work on her to convince her to go out with him, because her family didn't approve of him because he had long hair and was in a rock band. She finally agreed to go out with him. They dated for about 5 years. The reason Steve wrote this song for Sherrie was because she was upset that Journey had another woman in their "Separate Ways" video. It is why they used a mannequin in their "Chain Reaction" video which was filmed in the same location and time as "Separate Ways". Steve told the guys "I'm going to have to write her a song", because Sherrie was so angry. They broke up only a few short months after this song came out. This song actually wasn't Sherrie's favorite song on Steve's "Street Talk" album. It was "Foolish Heart".

Brad is more 'Perspective" in his reaction, he is PAYING attention. You don't have to "always' bop around and make squealing noises and always smile no matter what. I like to hear and "see' more "serious" reactions, rather than making constant bizarre remarks, jokes, or making fun of someone's voice by imitating them. That turns me off..

This was from Steve's solo career. Sherrie was his real girlfriend at the time. She said she wanted a song written about her.

Written by Steve Perry and Randy Goodrum. Good mix of 2 different writers! Randy Goodrum wrote You Needed Me for Anne Murray in 1978, Lesson in Leavin for the late Dottie West, RIP, in 1980 and Who's Holding Donna Now for Debarge in 1985. Short story on how these 2 writers got together. Randy Goodrum was writing songs for pop singers. He got a call 📞 from Steve Perry for a writing session. RG thought Steve Perry was from the band Aerosmith. But the daughter of RG is a Journey fan. She knows her dad thought the caller was Joe Perry of Aerosmith! 🙄The daughter brought her Journey poster and pointed who Steve Perry is! L🤣L When SP and RG met each other, SP wanted a break. But RG insisted on working immediately. This is the Nashville way. This tactic was foreign to Steve Perry, who grew up with soul and rock music. Oh Sherrie is the 1st song the 2 wrote together. Great 👍 song 🎵 Suggested song 🎵 Steve Perry sings Foolish Heart.

Steve Perry is a vocal beast and Neal Schon is underrated as a guitarist he started playing with Santana at 15 years old! Houston Live Mother Father you need to watch these guys live they were better than studio

Steve Perry was singing about his then girlfriend at the time Sherrie Swafford. The song was legit and Steve Perry’s voice has so much soul and conviction that he could sing anything and make it sound sincere. Truly One of a kind.

This (though a little sappy) is a good song. Kind of a guilty pleasure thing.

His girlfriend Sherrie was real and she is in the video for this song. Steve has never been married but does have a daughter and 2 grandsons from a relationship he had supposedly before he joined Journey. She is my favorite song bird🥰

Lovi'in the JOURNEY shirt, it is so good looking!!! Yeah this video when it came out, I have to admit I wasn't a big fan of it... my friend was and he played it too much...but I have grown to like it the older I get.
