Brad, you are absolutely correct about people being able to put on a happy front. I was the happiest guy at the bar, laughing and joking with everyone. When I got home and was alone, things were very different. My thoughts would get very dark and my self loathing would kick into overdrive. Thankfully, I was able to fight off the noise in my head and I got help(it's OK to get help). I'm living clean and sober for years now, and I'm happy and greatful to be alive. It turns out I didn't really want to die, I just didn't want to live that way anymore. Please, if you are struggling in any way, get help. The world is a better place with you in it. I love you.

I remember when this song came out seeing an interview with the lead singer and he said it was inspired by an experience he had when he went to help a local group home for troubled teenagers. There was one specific person that was depressed and using drugs and harming himself and losing friends and family as a result. Nobody knew how to help him and the song kind of grew from that experience. I could be remembering some details wrong.

I've been in the same situation a few times in my life. You don't have to worry about saying the right thing to someone, you just have to listen and be there for them. That alone usually is all someone needs to rethink those toxic thoughts. Knowing that someone actually gives a crap about them is all 99% of people need.

Yes and no. If someone is important to you then actively stay in their lives. However, some people have twisted it in that it's preventable if someone else just reaches out which is wrong on so many levels. Others can help but it's not up to them. Also, even if you do know something is wrong with someone doesn't mean you can stop them. That's some wish fulfillment.

This song was on repeat when one of my past students (she was 10 when I taught her), committed suicide at 12 years old. Such a happy and sweet girl. She went into middle school and ended up getting bullied. It messed so much with my head. I would see her every day at 10 years old, happy, playing with friends. And to hear she was being bullied so badly that she, a child at the age of 12 was hurting so bad that she felt ending everything was the best option, just kills me. A child that age should never have those thoughts. Shouldn't know what suicide is. Her mom had no idea she was bullied until after the fact. This poor girl suffered in silence. It's heart wrenching!

According to lead singer Isaac Slade, the song was composed and influenced by his experience while working as a mentor at a camp for troubled teenagers: "One of the youngsters I was paired up with was a musician. Here I was, a protected suburbanite, and he was just 17 and had all these problems. And no one could write a manual on how to save him." Slade claims that the song is about all of the people that tried to reach out to the boy but were unsuccessful. As Slade says in an interview, the boy's friends and family approached him by saying, "Quit taking drugs and cutting yourself or I won't talk to you again," but all he needed was some support. The boy was losing friends and going through depression. He lost his best friend and could not deal with it. The verses of the song describe an attempt by an adult to confront a troubled teen. In the chorus, the singer laments that he himself was unable to save a friend because he did not know how.

I know Isaac and the guys in this band from way back in the Denver music scene and various church worship stuff. The story is Isaac was youth pastoring at a group home for troubled teens in Denver. Him and Joe (the guitarist in The Fray) went on a mountain camp retreat with the kids and one of the kids inspired them to write this song. So this song is about that experience. Peace!

Such a powerful song. In the life that I used to exist in there were those where the pain was deep and the despair so agonizing that joy could no longer be found in living, but only hope in dying. I walked that fence many times and know grace and mercy and love were what saved me from the ravages of addiction. I have never known a powerlessness so intense than when I've had to watch others slip away because they no longer could believe that, that same grace and mercy and love was for them as well. My life's work is in letting my story be the anchor of hope for the lost. The stories are tragic and heart wrenching because precious human life is attached to them.

This song always makes me think of a friend I worked with near 14 years ago. She had an identical twin sister, both a year out of university, and they were both amazing human beings. I remember walking into work after New Years and hearing that they both had been killed in a head on collision with a drunk driver on New Years Eve. They were born within minutes of each other, and they both passed in the hospital from their injuries early on New Years Day, also within minutes of each other. I can't imagine what that would feel like as a parent. I wish the drunk driver would have had someone, like in this song, who would have tried to stop them from getting in his truck that night.

It was in several episodes of Grey's Anatomy they seemed to love to keep using it Alexandra Patsavas, the music supervisor for the show, saw the band perform in Los Angeles. Alexandra then incorporated the song into the second-season episode "Superstition". After its usage in the episode, the song became a minor Hot 100 hit. The song became an "unofficial theme" for the other members of the Grey's Anatomy production after the episode aired, leading to the decision that the song would be used in the main promotion for the third season in the show. Grey's Anatomy is credited with bringing popularity to the song. It was also used in the show's musical episode when Callie was having surgery to save her and baby Sofia's life. It was also used when Derek died and Meredith stood at his bedside

This is a great song with a heavy message! I have a Master’s in Psychology and I have studied a lot about depression. Depression has many different faces but I have learned that when some people decide on suicide there is a peaceful feeling that comes over them and they will appear happier because they are at peace and resigned to their decision to end their life. Certainly, this is not true for everyone because all situations are different!❤️❤️

your comment about how some people look happy and are smiling in their last vidoes or pictures is very important. Many times the reason they look happy is because they have come to terms with what they are going to do, They have gone past the point of pain or sadness and because they realise all that will soon end they feel the release of the pressure, they are not happy but they are happier than if they were conitnuing the struggle they have been living through. It can be one of the signs if some one you know who has been going through ssomething bad suddenly seems much better for no apparent reason. Of course this is not true in every case but it is often a "tell" .

Very well said and very true. We need to know how to listen to what is not being said. I cannot count the times where I have seen the final photographs taken of those who have departed in such a tragic way, depict anything other than an appearance of happiness and wellbeing. Then I focus on the eyes and they are always, with no exception, empty and sad. Haunted and despondent. May God help us all to know how to reach those who are silently reaching out to us.

This is a song and an era that makes me think of how "yesterday's music is better than today's". This came out in 2005..not our parents era or a Golden Era of music..still, there was so much good music that I was able to take this great song for granted. It was on the radio, on movie soundtracks...even made a great appearance or two on the TV show Scrubs (underrated show I took for granted at the time also). I STILL dont own a copy of this song, but I enjoy it whenever it comes on. It's hard to think of today's era having so much good music that a song like this (proven fairly timeless) could be taken for granted today...that it could be known by 70% of the population by pop-culture saturation alone. That's why I think it's provable that the eras/genres of music that Brad and Lex are examining now are provably "better" than what has been around for the last 5-10 years.

Throughout your whole catalog of videos. I have not seen one reaction to the band Sabaton. So here we go Sabaton in their song Bismarck. Be warned if you don't like history you might not like this band.
