The singer Sting worked as a school teacher before The Police. This is more or less a song about this particular “struggle”of being a hot teacher. There is a reference to the book Lolita too when they mention the author Nabokov.

Well, I don't know what his specific experience was like and how he reacted, but the narrator of the song sounds pretty culpable. He's makes it clear that he is not discouraging the attention and is making excuses for his behavior.

Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic is one I automatically turn way up every time I hear it. Walking On The Moon will stick with you for hours. One of my favorites is Canary In A Coal Mine.

As a former educator, I can attest that teachers do get flirted with by high school aged girls. And while on some level I was flattered, I found it completely unnerving to find some indirect and subtle ways to communicate that it is both unwanted and that it ain’t going to go anywhere. You don’t want to be that guy who straight-up calls them out because they’ll get their feelings hurt, deny they’re flirting, then spin it that the teacher initiated it. And, if there’s ever any temptation you damned sure better not act on it because of both legal AND moral consequences.

We had a teacher who got caught (by his wife) with a student. The only thing that surprised us was him being that dumb. She and a couple friends were all over him, in school, aggressively so.

Oh boy, do I recognise that. Spent three months as a sub phys ed. to 4 classes of 14-15 year olds, back in the early 2000s. Of course I/we knew of the mindset and mental makeup of teens and the sociological ramifications, but it was still a surprise to experience the length to which individuals would go, in order to assert themselves and test boundaries.

"That book by Nabokov" was "Lolita", written in 1955(ish) about the very subject you think it's about. Was worked into a movie of the same title by Stanley Kubrick.

This song is not autobiographical. Its just playing on the circumstances that were present at the time. STING NEVER HAD RELATIONS WITH HIS STUDENT. End of story XD... WIKIPEDIA: In 1993, however, he said of the song's inspiration, "You have to remember we were blond bombshells at the time and most of our fans were young girls so I started roleplaying a bit. Let's exploit that."[6] He also stated that the song does not have a basis in fact, stating that "To be frank, it was right in our market. A lot of teenage girls were buying our records. So the idea was, let's write a Lolita story."

15-16yr olds have zero filter. They don’t understand the consequences of their actions. Having an older man desire them would be even more of a high than taking street drugs! (They wouldn’t be the ones begging for mercy.) This is definitely the teacher’s point of view.

The Teacher is the one singing the chorus. She's too young and foolish and in love to make good decisions. He's literally shaking and coughing because he's creeped out at himself because yeah... she's attractive. And then how people will talk? PLEASE don't stand so close to me.

Completely agree. Once in a while I'll hear someone say that this is a "creepy" song. But it's about a teacher who is put into an uncomfortable position, and he does the right thing. What more do you want?! (lol) In fact, both of the subjects of this song are treated with sympathy, which I appreciate. Now if you want *creepy,* then go check out "Every Breath You Take"!

If you want another layer to the story, Sting, the songwriter and singer for the Police, was a teacher before he became a rock star, and said that he'd "been through the business of having 15-year-old girls fancying me - and my really fancying them!" Doesn't mean anything happened, but obviously he understood the temptation the teacher in the song was going through.

Oh, this song is disturbing as hell, and it's *meant* to be disturbing. Interestingly, The Police also meant for "Every Breath You Take" to be disturbing as well. So when couples started telling Sting it was "their" song, it kind of freaked him out. "If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free" was sort of his own response to "Every Breath You Take."

The lead singer Sting was a high school level teacher in England, before he become famous... I'm very sure he had plenty of underage girls crushing on him. (At my high school a cheerleader married the head football coach one month after she graduation. She had just turned 18 and it was a huge scandal, but nothing could be done about it).

@@jeffjohnson8697 Hey I get it. I'm trying to let folks who have little knowledge of Police know that their best songs may not have been their most commercial and pop radio friendly songs. Songs like Secret Journey, Any other day, Synchronicity, King of Pain, Darkness, etc. The songs you and others suggested aren't bad or sub-par, just possibly not the best thumbnail representation of their music. Maybe an OK place to start. But probably not a destination. Later, after listening to Every breath you take, people may see a song title someone mentioned in these comments and take a listen. They may or may not like what they hear. But they probably have more insight to the sound and characteristics of a group than a 'hits only' listener.

Vladimir Nabakov wrote the book Lolita, which has been made into a film adaptation twice, in 1962 by Stanley Kubrick, and in 1997 by Adrian Lyne. It suggests the same context where an underaged girl is smitten by an older man, in this case her stepfather.

I remember seeing the Police. They would always open their show with that keyboard drone, chimes and such, Stewart hitting a few toms and sporadic guitar sounds going on but u didn't see them yet, just a dark stage! The anticipation was too cool. It was about to go down.

In the song Money For Nothing by Dire Straits they have Sting from the Police singing the "I want my MTV" similarly to the chorus "don't stand so close to me". They wanted him because the Police were so huge at that time and Sting was like the face of MTV then.

When I was a young child, I heard the lyrics as "don't sell no oats to me". I was convinced this song was about a man selling oats to a man with a horse. Needless to say, my Mom always laughed when this song came on.

In my junior high back in the 80's, our drama teacher ran off with one of the students. Huge scandal. He had been sleeping with girls in his classes. (he was good looking and apparently charming, we didn't get along and I was kicked out of his class. He always gave me the creeps) A bunch of the parents found out, sued the school, sued him after he was caught, but not before one of the fathers " ran " into him in some store parking lot. When he got out of the hospital, he had a huge list of charges, as well as having to register as a sex offender. I don't remember how many years he went away for, his life was ruined, his wife divorced him and I'd heard he commit the big S. I can't confirm that though. As for the girl? Got pregnant, though no one knew if it was the teacher, she left school. Not sure after that. It was so insane, this wasn't even high school. Thank you guys!!!!! Love our energy!

During the late 70's and early 80's The Police were so good that they actually influenced the mighty Rush to change their sound. One power trio to another. This song could not be released today in our sensitive culture sadly. For music's sake.

I think the rate of maturity for boys and girls has slowed through the decades because life became so much easier for people after WW2. I graduated in '74 and i ran across a picture of the senior class of 1945 and they looked like grown adults and we looked like kids.

I'm always reminded by this song of how common it was for some of my high school teachers at times to intentionally create distance between themselves and a few of my fellow students. Looking back maybe they sometimes did this because of situations that form the framework of the song. Context is everything so hearing this now as a much older person and not from the perspective of a teenager as I was when it was released. I think the character of the teacher is attempting to keep distance between himself and the student but regardless of his actual actions, "Loose talk in the classroom To hurt they try and try, Strong words in the staff room The accusations fly", again I just think it's a matter of perspective...

Even though he didn’t do anything - yeah the song is from the teacher’s perspective- the song was still risqué cause he was fighting the urge, ‘Frustration so bad it makes him cry…’ This ska style of music that the Police put out at the time made the song a hit. It was on heavy rotation at the time.

I dated my college professor in the 90"s and he picked me up in his bmw with this song playing and it was raining we had been dating a while. He was the best sex I ever had. I knew what it was all about. My dad wanted to have him removed from the university but my mom intervened in the weirdest way ever. She told my dad if we step in we lose our daughter forever. Note I was not a minor. She had lunch with my professor and he told her how he felt about me. She told him how she felt and they were the same age. It worked out . I never wanted to be his wife. We just had so much fun and I learned a lot from him about art and he is famous in my area. I was his muse I believe. He called me his Gaston Lachaise. I was fit but voluptuous. End of I do not need judgement. I knew what I was doing and it was an amazing time for me!

Their songs do have an assortment of vibes, but they are all good ones! ☮️💜😊

I wanted to go, but had no money, and more important, was living with a very strict stepmother who wouldn't have allowed me even if I had a safe ride and the money. I remember a couple of my classmates coming to school with their Police concert T-shirts after that show though. I lived in Delta.

All songs are great. He was an English teacher. A Special on PBS had interviews w. Him and his wife, Trudy. They own an organic farm, vineyard & restaurant in Italy. Songs without Police are good also. At 64 still love the melodies and thought provoking lyrics of most tunes. 🎶 🎸

I rode the buses at college. Our campus was huge and there is a train track that separated east and west campus so it was practically impossible to get from one class to another in time without buses and attendance was taken at the beginning of classes so you couldn't skip or be late. Parking usually took 30 minutes to several hours depending on the time of day and you could only use designated parking lots that were all colorized by the type of parking pass you had. In short, buses were an absolute necessity.

Sting, the singer/songwriter in The Police, was an English teacher before he was a rock star, and wrote the song based on his experience of having under-age girls fancying, and in some cases propositioning, himself and other good-looking teachers. As far as we know he resisted the temptation, but he could see how easily someone could fail to. The line about "that book by Nabokov" at the end is referencing an infamous book called Lolita, which is about a middle-aged man having an affair with an under-age girl. That book is the reason why under-age 'femme fatales' have come to be generically called 'Lolitas'.

As teenage boys we had huge crushes on some of the beautiful young female teachers... as a girl somehow it seems worse when in fact it's the same...a young female teacher in the UK was struck off last week after having wild parties with teenage boy. He was eighteen.

Interesting side note is that Sting was a school teacher in his native England before he became a rock star. Fantastic band. Legendary. Stewart Copeland is arguably the best drummer in rock history. Andy Summers is one of the most influential guitarists in rock history. Sting is a genius when it comes to songwriting and music in general. I'm not saying that The Police are the greatest band of all time, but The Police are the greatest band of all time. :)
