Well....making this video took longer than expected 😎. The Carpenter's Star is a classic and I am so happy to have one in my Stashbuster series. And I already have a special someone that has claimed this one. Be sure to check out the new colouring pages where you can play with the colours over and over again. Enjoy.

I am a old sewist but a beginner quilter and I stumbled across your channel by accident. Boy am I glad that I did! Watching your videos has taught me a tremendous amount about quilting. The jig method you showed in this video is genius!! but, I really appreciate that you show us how to lay out the fabric and cut it and how to choose the fabrics to use. Then you go step-by-step with tips along the way to actually create the quilt. You are amazing. Thank you for sharing your brilliance with the world.

Well now you've gone and done it 😂 Thank you for this. (Love your channel and your work btw. Thank you so much) Im currently in over thinking mode for two weeks now and had full intentions of doing this pattern with 10x10 squares cut from yardage. Finished quilt size at 73x73 without a border. That was fine until I saw this. This is much better for sure cutting 9x9 squares from yardage. I actually have fabric at 45" width and two yards of solid colors- one dark, one light and 3 yards of the background being white. Reducing the block size down to 9x9 is nothing short of a ohhhh yeahhhh this is awesome! I hate wasting fabric and using these dimensions I have the option of adding a beautiful 4" border around it with binding and still have left overs! You gave me some serious warm and fuzzies today. Thank you and much love from BC Canada 🇨🇦 ❤

@sarahstewart2059
@sarahstewart2059 6 месяцев назад
@JustGetitDoneQuilts omg crystal clear is how I see it and then some. Changing the block size from 9.5" to 8.5" is not only yardage cut friendly but also border friendly. I'm a fan of symmetry and balance. Because the finished blocks are 8" - a 4" finished border would be the ultimate choice to achieve both. Also, it makes for some straightforward cutting, a more manageable finished quilt size at 72"x72" with a border instead of a 73x73 non border quilt. I really lucked out and found some Japanese 100% cotton solids from a company who was making masks during covid. This company actually manufactures braces for knees and such and quite the company. They sold it to me at wholesale pricing for $5/meter. It was nothing short of START THE CAR!! 🤣 I am making this Carpenter Star pattern with two solid colors and a background of white. I actually got 5 different solid colors and 2+ yards each and 6+ yards of the background white for less than $100. (Each color measured out at 80x45 off the bolt, so yup, 2+ yards. Wooohoo) I'm very excited about this now at this size you've shown. Gives me a ton of extra fabric and so much infact, I am starting this new quilting adventure of mine (once my machine arrives) with making a matching Carpenter Star quilt for my cat Gibson Figure that's a good place to start for size and get used to a sewing machine. 😀 apologies for the book. I'm just very excited about this and keep watching your video to let it sink in. ❤️❤️

That’s a beautiful quilt, Karen! Not my colours, but I have plenty of fat quarters in my stash in colours I *do* like, so this should be totally doable. Love your painters’ tape hacks, way cheaper than those pricey BlocLock rulers, and it achieves the same results. Congratulations on reaching 270K subscribers! When you started with those first few Dollarama hacks videos, did you ever imagine you’d build this business and be exposed to more than a quarter of a million viewers worldwide?! Your hard work and dedication has truly paid off. I wish when I lived in East York I had joined the local MQG so I could’ve met you. 😉. Maybe I’ll get the chance at a quilt show one day, now that you’re such a worldwide celebrity!! Enjoy it, you deserve it. Thanks for all your videos. ~Diana K.

There are two best parts on this video for me: the tape hack and how to add the top and bottom borders to make it longer. The borders make the quilt much more usuable, in my opinion. I don't have much use for square quilts. Thanks! By the way, could we have a look at you and your husband when you were first married? The motorcycle trips are certainly a unique way to celebrate.

That gig, using the 6 layers of masking tape to make an edge, is a wonderful idea. I have wished that someone would print coloring books of quilt pattern designs for coloring. I have been drawing my own (on to grid paper) to color when I am looking for hidden designs. It also helps me to deside to use sashing or not; because, some patterns look much better with sashing. Thank you for this video.

Thank you! I made a Carpenter’s Star charity quilt, and I’ve wanted to make one for myself for forever! The hardest part is picking out the fabrics!

You inspired me to make an hst quilt with some of the charm packs I bought years ago. Just last week I started thinking about doing a carpenter’s star with more of those packs. Just then you post a carpenter’s star video. Thanks for reading my mind (and others’ minds by the same token). Much love and thanks to you Karen!

Wonderful tutorial Karen. I love the large size, your cutting , sewing and pressing instructions. It's all there and a download to boot. You are so generous with your time and talent. Hopefully one day I will meet you in person. Until then, thank you for all you do. It is always so enjoyable to see you via computer. Has given me something to look forward to this past year. Blessings.

Thanks for the color explanation. I’ve been thinking of making this design for awhile. Taking a b/w picture is brilliant! Thank you.

I watch many of your videos - I always enjoy them. But something about this one was extra-soothing. Was it the background music? The pace of the speech? Maybe I just find the Carpenter’s Star to be calming. Whatever the reason, thank you. This quilt is on my “maybe” list for winter 2021/22. I’ve been quilting for years, but the thought of this basic pattern is very appealing.

Thank you Karen for another stashbuster pattern. Nice big blocks and I can see this in Christmas fabrics. Nice changes to the website too. Much easier detour and love the colouring pages. ❤🇦🇺

You’re an absolute genius! I made and used your jig to mark my 48 HSTs and it was so quick and easy to mark. Next, I will use your method to square them up instead of an expensive block lock ruler.

Karen, I am loving this series, but I love all of your videos! I had never had anyone instruct me on either finger pressing before I try to iron, or to trim off that 1/4” on my triangle blocks before I sew. thank you!

Love love love. Especially the insight into what the key elements are i.e. contrast - helps when we want to experiment, 'tweak this, not that'
