I'm surprised you didn't address how the prehistoric armored fish's skull looks identical including the teeth to the "Vish" part of Dracovish and Arctovish. Like it's the same head. Meaning there is possibly a connection between Relicanth and the original un-genetically spliced Galar Vish Pokemon

It's a bit of a stretch considering the islands dont fit the pattern too well and there's no confirmation from pokemon officially. More so just a 4chan rumor, it also wouldnt explain Wailmer either. It seems more so they were chosen since one represents a fish that went to land while the other was a wolf that took to the sea and became a whale as it matches with the themes of the games

Of course I've thought about the coelacanth, for at least three reasons. One, there's a Pokémon based on it. Two, there's a Digimon based on it. Three, a pair were in a tank belonging to Preston Whitmore, that crazy, old rich guy in the Disney Atlantis movie, even though it takes place in 1914 when they were still thought to be extinct, just to show how awesome he was.

It makes sense for the first fight. But then she uses almost exclusively Gen 1 Pokemon for her Emerald Rematches (and a Steelix that isn't even Rock Typed while Aggron is just there). I think for most people, Relicanth is one of those Pokémon that's just sort of inherently neat. The fact that they were tied to the kind of convoluted process of obtaining the Regi trio back in the day meant that, oddly enough, most people actually had one, and probably used it, if only for a bit. It's also one of those Pokémon that, really, I think is perfect. Giving it anything new would feel like a slight betrayal to the concept and the real world animals that inspired it. Never change, my little Rock friend.

On my first playthrough of Pokemon Emerald, I had my first encounter with a wild Relicanth, having never encountered it during my playthrough of Sapphire. I recognized it's coelacanthic origins immediately, even before I read its name, and added it to my team. This turned out to be a good thing, as it was in Emerald where I decided to go after the Regis for the first time, and after translating the braille, I learned I needed both my Relicanth (whom I'd named Dunkle, cuz its face reminded me of Dunkleostis) and a Wailord, which I'd yet to evolve. In the end, that ancient fish became such a strong battler on my team that it was one of the six I used to first clear the Elite Four. It was actually Dunkle who finished off Drake, getting a lucky crit against Salamence. Every single Gen 3 playthrough since (and many others where Relicanth appears as catchable), I've gone out of my way to catch one.

The largest among the coelacanths was called Mawsonia, a suction feeder that grew up to 17 feet long. It lived during the Late Jurassic to Mid Cretaceous of what is now Africa, South America, and Eastern North America. In much of its African range, it was very likely on the menu of everyone’s favorite sailed duck-croc, Spinosaurus.

Relicanth needs some kind of evolution that is the Head half of Dracovish... because they're both Fossil mon based slightly on Dunkleosteus I think this would fit in some kind of region with Regional Fossil Pokémon but I think that kind of stuff will never happen

Only now I realize that dot isn't the eye. I wonder if someone's made a list of misinterpreted pokemon. You could argue wobbuffet is on there, too.

What a coincidence. I actually caught a Shiny Relicanth yesterday when I first watched this

Admit it. The only reason we know about the Coelacanth is from Animal Crossing.

I've always had a weak spot for Relicanth during my Hoenn travels, but never had a spot for it on my team because I already had Swampert :(

My cousin actually caught a coelicanth when we were on vacation. We were all terrified by it and immediately assumed the sliminess on it was probably poison. It wasn't until much later that I saw the Pokemon equivalent and realized what it was we were dealing with.

Of course we've thought about that fish. He was part of the regi riddle.

I always confuse geneus Placoderm for Pachyderm. They both sound so similar.

Excellent explanation Lockstin! Relicanth has always made me curious when playing Hoenn. Like why this particular Pokémon is needed for the Regi puzzle. I now know a little more of the reason thanks to you. ✨✨

Relicanth and Wailord were chosen as keys on purpose-Relicanth was a fish that was based partly on the fish that crawled out onto dry land and Wailord was based on the origin of the cetacean, which was a prehistoric equid that took to life in the sea to get away from its natural predators of the time back in the early-mid Paleogene Period.

I loved this video so much, especially after having Ichthology in my final semester of college back in the spring, but my professor would have a fit that you keep saying swim bladder instead of gas bladder XD

I actually personally think Relicanth is a cool pokemon and I have used it in playthroughs before. I am can be a big nerd when it comes to prehistoric creatures and I also love aquatic creatures so when I saw Relicanth I immediately thought it was so odd yet interesting. Then caught it after that I grew to like it more than I thought I would. It honestly into my top 10 favorite water types despite its many weaknesses and its 4x weakness to grass moves.
