In today's "Five Play Friday" episode, we dive deep into a series of plays that highlight both the brilliance and areas of improvement for our officiating crew.
1. *Block Charge on a Dribbler:*
We kick off with a block charge involving a dribbler. Did the defender flop or was it a genuine charge? While the call was accurate, our crew seemed a bit tentative, underlining the importance of confidence in officiating.
2. *Block Charge on a Secondary Defender:*
Next up, another block charge scenario. This time, the secondary defender in the lane is under scrutiny. The calls were on point, but the crew's hesitance in mechanics is evident.
3. *Transition Foul by the Center Official:*
We analyze a transition foul called by the center official. Beyond the call's accuracy, we delve into the officials' habits during this pivotal play.
4. *Trail Official's Positioning:*
A scenario where our Trail official appears out of position, but the Center official steps up, showcasing excellent judgment and athleticism.
5. *Center Official Out of Position:*
Our concluding play highlights the significance of positioning. An obvious foul is missed due to the center official's positioning, emphasizing the need for spatial awareness on the court.

24:56 Greg, I'm surprised you didn't talk about the dead ball activity after the charge call in Play 1. White #1 and Black ballhandler both went to the floor. Calling official turns his head away from the players to make his PCF signal. Lead/New Trail seems to be preoccupied with the ball. In the meantime, although the video is grainy, perhaps White #1 says a couple things to Black ballhander. I say at least one official should step in there once there are players on the floor after a play like that. What say you? Great work as always, Greg!

Jeff, we did discuss the taunt on the live stream. It didn't make it through the editing process. I think a big factor as to why this was unobserved was the crew's uncertainty of what happens next because calling official goes tableside.

Play three, I feel the trail should be *behind* the play. When the ball almost goes to the backcourt, he isn't adjusting his position. Then, when he gets caught, he should not stick to the sideline, but move in and get more behind the players to have a good view. A foul was almost a given in that situation. What was missed is if it was intentional. A defender reaching in with two arms looks very dubious. Maybe it was a held ball, but it looked off...

Play 1, looks like ball handler moved pivot foot before he began his dribble. Hard to tell with the video quality.

Play #1: While I agree that there was clear embellishment from the defender, it is still a PCF. A flop does not mean there was no foul. The ball handler did initiate enough contact, the evidence being that after the defender falls back, the offensive player goes through his space. If the ball handler had been under control, he would have maintained his dribble and his position after the defender fell - in which case it would be easy to justify a no-call and give a flop warning (fake a foul). This was the correct call, however I would have a brief conversation with that defender or the head coach to remind him not to embellish contact (a friendly warning, so to speak). Tough play though.

Play #1 I think the calling official got it right. LGP was established and the defender was moving horizontally while maintaining LGP and the offensive play initiated the contact. Player Control!!!!!

Player control to me. While the defender did a great acting job, offensive player still initiated substantial contact while defender had established and maintained LGP. Just because defender also earned an Emmy, doesn’t negate the good defense and charge.

Strong argument for PCF. Fair!

Gregg, I love your comment about 3 person officiating. I wish you could talk to the powers at be in Section 5 (western NY Board 60) and convince them how 3 person is so important to the game of basketball. It's very frustrating to officiate 2 person with how the game is played these days. Yet the vast majority of schools do not want 3 on their game. SMH

On the first play, that lonely island just got another inhabitant. Yes, the defender had an LGP, but the ball handler only goes diagonally to his left and didn't try to change direction to his right and get by the defender. As for the defender, he only stays on the ball handler's right side never trying to improve his position. Considering neither player changes their initial direction, there is no way the offensive player created enough contact to displace the defender to warrant that reaction. The coach would get this exact explanation, and the defensive player would be warned for faking a foul (FIBA), or at the next opportunity have a little chat and warn the player to not do it again depending on the level. On other matters, why do switches have to be made that complicated, and are spot mechanics really that hard🤔...take your time, no one needs to be in that much of a hurry to report😉

Great call. Defender had established LGP. At that point May move sideways, backward or obliquely. Ball handler responsible for the contact if defender moves legally.

all I can rebut is that displacement is required for a PCF. In my opinion the contact did NOT cause displacement, but rather the embellishment created the appearance of displacement.

I went with a block because I thought the defender was late getting to the spot. 😊Imo

On plays 3 & 4, non playing personnel shall be located outside the free-throw lane lines extended towards the sidelines. On play one, I'm ok with a pc foul, yes the defender embellishes the contact, however, there is contact. Could official have called travel, maybe? Also, on that first play, not only should the officials not switched going long, the center is in much too hurry to leave the scene and leave all those players for the lead.

On play #2, looks to me the defender jumped straight up into the air and the offensive player who stole the ball created the contact, prompting an offensive foul. However, I can understand why the center called the foul on the defense. It would have taken a lot of cahones to call that foul on the offensive player.

If you freeze the frame at 6:11, you can see the defender plants his feet just above the low block in the key - well to the left of the path of the ball handler. If he had indeed jumped straight up from this position, there would have been no contact or marginal contact between the two. He clearly jumps from point A to B (from his initial position towards the baseline). When a player changes his position in the air, they lose their LGP (come out of their cylinder) and are responsible for contact - this is a black and white play and must be called a block.

So, if you made a no call on that first clip as you discussed, due to the player embellishing, how would you deal with the negativity from coaches and fans to follow that could discredit your calls for the rest of the game, especially since this was early on in the game, I think you said? Would it be fair to call the player control foul and then have a discussion with the defender and his coach that you will not call that call again if you suspect that the player is acting as he did in that play?

This is why we make the big bucks! (oh, wait a minute...) The path of least resistance here is rule a PCF. There may be pushback from Visitors coach related to that. No amount of pushback from either side related to our rulings is going to discredit anything. Yes, home crowd may disagree. Yes. The defender may disagree. Yes, the coach may disagree. That is baked into the game.
