I am a Leeds fan and didn't think I would ever say this but since Roy stopped playing I am a big fan. Very dry humour and funny. A seriously good pundit and a family man.
I’m a United fan and have been since 1964. I’ve always hated Leeds but about 7/8 years ago I was out in London with some mates on a bit of a pub crawl. We met 2 Leeds fans about 22/23 years old. We got chatting. We were all in our 60s but these lads were such great blokes, such good fans and so passionate for their team they transformed my attitude. Leeds were challenging to get back in the Premiership that season and I’ve had a soft spot for them ever since. Change is possible. Best wishes to you all.
He was an unbelievable player. People think about his hard tackles etc but his football brain and technical ability were incredible. He was a top footballer.
He sure was. At Forest he was a box-to-box defensive midfielder, launching out of defence to attack. That was what made his name. He continued that role at Man Utd, before Ferguson retrained him as a central midfielder, with Scholes as the attacking midfielder. This prolonged his career no question.
I've been a Man United fan for 40 years now. I've seen a lot of great players come and go. World class players. Keano was the only player that made me cry the day he left
Unfortunately, "fans" exaggerate the negative stories about Roy Keane. People tend to forget the good stories about Mr. Keane on and off the field. Of course, like all of us he is not perfect but he WAS a great player and many ex great players vouch for that.
Watching him at Forest in the early days was an honour! loved Keano and still do, ive got so much respect for this man and so proud he talks about forest in the way he does, after all he won in the game he never ever forgot his roots and still doesnt.
I’m a Liverpool fan. But when I think of what it is to be a football captain - first name is Roy Keane. We would have been absolutely obscene with him at our club. Huge huge respect for that man.
Love how modest Roy is. He’s the best central midfielder ever to play in the Premier League. Just above Viera. People talk about Keane being a hardman. His attitude. The tackles. They forget he was an an incredible player. He hardly gave the ball away. Would always play the ball forward and in to feet. Elite footballer.
I pray that keane and ferguson will have a long sit down chat at some point before its too late.. even if its one where they both know its the only time theyll ever talk.. just clear the air, be open and honest.. and set everything straight They will always definitely respect each other
Very underrated player. Look at his performance v Juventus in '99 against Zidane, Davids et al Scored a goal and dragged Man U back in that game so they could get to the Champs League final Awesome player and Captain
@@ciaran_keadypeople have this perception that he was just a thug that fouled people. In reality he was a great passer of the ball and could dictate games perfectly.
Could listen to Roy for hours and hours on end. After everything he achieved in the game his so humble. What a top professional, player and leader he was. Such a waste to not see him in another managerial job putting all his qualities and experience to use. People forgot the amazing job he did at Sunderland as well.
Listen to his words it's from the heart. His belief in his own ability for. Man.U it's a pity all present players don't give the same comment. Well done Keno legend
Keane had three careers at Utd. He was more of an attacking mid when he signed, then he transitioned to box to box before becoming purely a defensive mid. Let's not forget he also played CB and RB quite a few times during injury crises. He was RB when Utd battered Ipswich 9-0. His first 3 managers in professional football were Brian Clough, Jack Charlton and Alex Ferguson...that's not a bad education.
" you can control it,you can pass it and you can move, just do that". In other words don't try and show off, cloughie kept him grounded, no big time Charlie's when he was in charge. He said he drank a bottle of milk because cloughie told him to despite not liking milk but he didn't dare refuse.⚽
What would you give for a footballer with the Roy attitude.... brilliant! Would you want a team mate tough diciplined and full of passion... Definitely. The game is sadly lacking real footballers today.. but when the game goes around treating adults both on and off the pitch like Children.. that is exactly what you will get.
There was a time when, if Keane didn't play, we all just knew that United would lose. Without Keane, a United loss was almost inevitable, that was his influence... I still remember the treble days... when there were rumours when he would leave for Juventus, every United fan was nervous.
He was better than he gives himself credit for. An excellent player going forward, a goal scorer. He was quite a threat before adopting a defensive mid role. And his passing was simple but excellent. Always forward and well weighted passes.
Glorious Freudian slip at 4:46 - “so when I did become the MANAGER” - meant to say “Captain”. Either way, best captain the club’s had. Inspired those around him
Liverpool fan. In my lifetime the greatest player in PL history. The best Captain, the best man, no BS =, no excuse, no bad habits, massive strength, and discipline. The best player when it mattered on a field of supposed superstars. A mentality God. In my world 11 he is the first name on the team sheet, then Messi..
When your passing rate is in the 70 to 80% completion rate levels, you were a great player. The hardest thing to do is control and pass the ball at the highest level when the game is played at a 100 miles an hour. Control, pass and move is the basis of football. Then doing it at 200miles an hour is the difference between a pro and everything else. Then he added tackling ie retrieving the lost balls etc then ofcourse his leadership skills. Not the most skilful but had the basics to a T.
He downplays his own ability when he says Pass. Control. Move. He done this and more to the very highest level. His winning mentality was unmatched, his aggression was frightening. They really don’t make them like Keane anymore
Why he is an absolute great pro and and was exceptional every time he went to war. Only time I seen him bested in a midfield battle was Man Utd vs Real Madrid....Fernando Redondo run the show and Keano couldn't touch him that night. But top player and pro.
Keane said before he tried yoga for a while and that he couldn't run in the next game which happened to be real madrid and was rubbish in that game. He said he knocked the yoga on the head after that. I think he said it was 2003.
He's honest. If you're bad you'll know if your good you'll find out eventually 😂. As a forest fan as soon as saw him in Dublin v Man City I new we wouldn't keep him for long He got dogs abuse 😂😂😂 and Niall Quinn Ireland highest scorer at the time,, was booed remorselessly The Irish are a funny bunch
No wonder he gets so frustrated with the Utd teams of the past 11 years. He would have gone through a brick wall for that club and he expected it of his team mates. No excuses. What a player.
Control, pass and move. The players who excel are of course talented, but they do the basics so well. Milan is my team for 35 years. Watching my team over the past 10 years, I'll tell you that control, pass and move are skills not easily gotten or honed. Too often instead of control and easy pass forwards, footballers decide to play it backwards or sideways. Scared to take responsibility or panic when the opposition even slightly press. Last weekend we literally seemed to play with a 1-4-0-6 system. Midfield non existent, the defenders just passing it around amongst themselves, and all of the other players with their backs to the opponents waiting for some sort of magic to happen. Scared to receive the ball, pass it and or take it past an opponent and put the opposition on the back foot - just can't do it. So whilst it seems that roy Keane is downplaying or simplifying his abilities, the reality couldn't be more different. He could do those 3 things extremely well, and that's why he is so celebrated by his clubs' fans even after all these years.
Just to educate you a little so the next time you have a little snigger behind your keyboard know that there are no th sounds in the Irish Gaelic language which most spoke until 100 years ago so they were left out when English became the more common language. Thank you Alf Garnett
He done a deal with Kenny to sign for Liverpool and then changed his mind. He would’ve been class at LFC. It just goes to show how good he was as he went to win tons of trophies.
He was shot from 2003 onwards when his hip went and was basically wearing a mask when picking up his wages. It's telling he never played again after leaving utd. Fantastic in his day though.
He always goes on about people who didnt win trophies but to be fair if United didnt want him and he went other clubs he wouldnt have won. Would be interesting to see him humble
Hahahahaha, you obviously never watched him live. He used to take the piss out of Jones with his football ability, same as Ince did. Go and play on your playstation, KIDDO!
They had their chances, didn't take them, weren't good enough to lace the mans boots never mind being good enough to get a clatter at him and in fairness to Keane for a small Man he would mix it with any of them on the field of battle. The hardest battles for him were with the refs, trying to gain any advantage he could so the team would win nothing to do with being a hard man on the field of play. I never saw Keane as a Vinny Jones type of player, I didn't think he was an more aggressive than Robbo or Zidane for that matter, Good midfield players will stamp their authority on a game, it's dog eat dog.
There's a lot more to that story Kevin. Like you I was as pissed off as ever when it happened, but the real culprits of the Saipan debacle were the FAI. And of course you're blaming Keane, and others are blaming McCarthy, and typical as bloody typical can be.......the FAI escape with not a blemish.
Most Irish people would be the same as Keane. We are not interested in hob-nobbing our way to the top and cups of tea with the manager would be out. I bet Irwin never had cosy chats with Ferguson. His praise for Clough seems OTT, probably because Clough is dead and can't dispute it. Clough once punched Keane in the face. I've no doubt Keane is a winner but he sure rubs people up the wrong way. He doesn't seem capable of changing and remains a relic of the early 90s. I don't think he is capable of adapting to how things are now for players. It's a shame because he has a lot to give, but I don't see any future for him management and he is becoming a cartoon character in punditry. I would love to see him taking on a sleeping giant of a team like Sampdoria or Fiorentina. Any team in fact. It's now or never, the longer he languishes in podcasts, the more his profile dies. His kids are all more or less grown up now, so there's no excuses.
Not over the top about Clough, Clough was fantastic with Forest then Derby and possibly the best manager of his time in the same way as Ferguson Clough was outspoken which is why he never managed England he did give keane a slap as keane will tell you but he was of his time a top top manager.
