I would call it a win as you didn’t put it all in a ponytail and saw through it. I have been cutting my wife’s hair and given regular haircuts to a couple of her friends for years. My method is to first have her seated on the stool, I cape her then let her elbow length hair down and comb it out with a center part. I section her hair just behind her ear on each side, then pin up all of her hair except the very bottom layer. I trim that layer to remove the split and damaged ends, usually taking off about an inch. I then let her hair down in 1/2” increments and trim each layer to match the previously cut hair. Cutting it in this manner allows the shears t cut a nice clean line versus the blades pushing the hair before it cuts. I have her turn her head to the side and trim her hair so it matches the back, but is not longer than the back. I check to ensure that it is even on both sides by holding the hair from each side under her chin. I trim her hair every other month. It is very convenient and a money saver. I would suggest that being you do haircuts at home that you have your husband do it for you. In that manner you can get your ends trimmed on a more frequent basis and keep the splits under control without having to fear getting too much chopped off.

This was really helpful! Thank you! So cool you've cut her hair and her friends' hair. I'll definitely ask him for help again! ✂️

Do get the cape, hair clips, sectioning comb and have him watch some RU-vid videos with you. There is a good one from Morocco method trimming hair for growth that is really good. I always trim hair dry. I don’t wet it down first, so I can see how the hair lays. Having him do just minimal trims of a 1/2” or less is best that he will get practice and comfortable doing it for you. I never point cut, I do the blunt snip to seal the ends, point cutting cuts the hair shafts at an angle which causes the ends to split.
