Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight Folding Knife 3.37 inch CPM-SPY27 Satin Plain Blade, Cobalt Blue FRCP Handles
Description
SP101PCBL2: C101PCBL2 Manix 2, Cobalt Blue CPM-SPY27
Spyderco
This elite expression of the Manix 2 Lightweight combines its weight-saving advantages, full-service cutting power, and the strength of the Ball Bearing Lock mechanism with the enhanced edge retention and corrosion resistance of CPM-SPY27. After years of using the best materials the world’s leading steel manufacturers could provide, Spyderco decided it was time to create their own. In close cooperation with Crucible Industries, they've developed CPM-SPY27 - a particle metallurgy stainless steel containing a proprietary mix of alloys, including vanadium, molybdenum, niobium, nitrogen, and cobalt. This remarkable composition, enhanced by the amplifying effects of cobalt and the state-of-the-art Crucible Particle Metallurgy process is produced exclusively for Spyderco and will be featured in select USA-made models. Every knife made with this steel will also have a distinctive cobalt-blue handle color that highlights its elite pedigree.
The leaf-shaped profile of the Manix 2's blade provides a long, gently curved cutting edge and a sturdy, utilitarian point. For maximum control, it features a forefinger choil and a thumb ramp with strategic jimping (textured grooves) that allow a forward-positioned grip during detailed cutting tasks. The 14mm Trademark Round Hole proudly announces the knife's Spyderco pedigree and makes one-handed deployment with either hand swift and positive.
The Manix 2 Lightweight's handle is injection molded from cobalt blue fiberglass reinforced copolymer (FRCP) and includes Spyderco's distinctive Bi-Directional Texturing pattern to ensure a secure grip in all environmental conditions. The lightweight FRCP handle reduced the overall weight of the knife to a mere 3 ounces--42 percent lighter than the G10 handled Manix 2. A reversible wire clip provides convenient left or right-side tip-up carry and an oversized lanyard hole allows the easy attachment of fobs and lanyards.
Linking the blade and handle is Spyderco's patented Ball Bearing Lock mechanism. This high-strength lock consists of a ball bearing nested within a durable textured polymer "cage." When the blade is opened, a compression spring drives the cage forward to wedge the ball bearing between a ramp on the blade tang and the steel frame anchored between the handle halves. Drawing the caged ball bearing to the rear releases the lock and allows the blade to close smoothly while keeping your fingers safely away from the sharp edge.

I have no experience with Spyderco's new super steel, SPY27. But you make an excellent point about cost to performance ratio. I have had both good and bad luck with 9Cr. Good 9Cr is a great performer but as with all steel blades, its who is producing the final product (heat treatment etc) as to how well the finished blade performs. Its something to keep an eye on.
@rustyminer
@rustyminer Год назад
I agree. Civivi 9cr is good enough for me. Although, this Spyderco did seem to come sharp. We'll see what I think of it further down the road

I think the Spydie "hole" is the best thing to come to folding knives since sliced bread....and apparently so does Spyderco (and a lot of other knife makers)... but I'm hard pressed to pay $250 or so for a hole! That said, I appreciate that Spyderco will make their own steel, will sharpen their knives for free, creates new designs and supports and pay knife designers. I agree with you that this FRCP is not "Cobalt Blue" in color and wish I had a $200+ Sydie to complain about! LOL.

Hey tai, I thought I responded to this comment, but yes, Spyderco's are expensive. I do believe they are of good quality and their heat treats are good, but at the end of the day, Civivi, Kubey and others do a good job for a third of the price.

Thank you for checking out the video and giving feedback. I think the Manix 2 is a great knife, but I find myself grabbing my Para 3 way more often. Maybe it is the blade size.

Hi Rusty, I bought a Manix 2 when I was visiting Golden CO. I wanted it for the lock, grip shape & overall look. I got the blacked out version with the S30V blade. Always liked the look but yeah it was pricey. I'm happy with my purchase but kinda wanting that Spy 27 version as well & I actually like the color. It has an actual committed finger choil & I like that too. I'm sure you will be liking it more & more as time goes on. You certainly made a great choice for you first Spyderco. My first was the Endura.

Thanks Tom. I do like the knife more and more each day. I also like the light weight, thinness of it. I never did find Spyderco blade shapes attractive and I find most of them very similar, but after owning one, they are useful

Beautiful knife Rusty. I didn’t have much luck in my dive into Spyderco. I ended up on a sage 5 in m4 steel I was happy with. Never made it to manix 2. Went through a few PM’s and Yojumbo..aweful centering and action for the price in my experience. But to each their own. Nice look bud.

Hey WBM, I wanted to give the brand a shot. The Manix 2 is a nice knife, but it is on the expensive side. Verdict is still out on this one.
@WhstlblwrBlastingEpsteinsPals
That's not cobalt blue. I agree That's aquamarine blue. Good video. I hadn't heard of this steel. I see the Paramilitary in so many videos for their size comparisons. I see the Delica, Tenacious, and Native Chief. I heard of the Manix. It's not showing up in very many videos I see, but, I'm mostly watching budget knife channels.

I have the same knife. Solid performer. Dyed mine with a blue rit dye and it turned out a weird dark green
@rustyminer
@rustyminer Год назад
Thank you for sharing your experience. I called Spyderco and complained. The said that because it was made out of FRCP and not FRN it turned out differently than they expected. Which I say, it's the factory job to sort that out and not sell seconds. But, anyway, you probably had the same issue trying to dye it. FRCP apparently responds to dye differently.
@doejon9424
@doejon9424 Год назад
You have to remember with Rit Dye, you can only go darker. This is a fairly dark turquoise color to begin with. So blue or green won't do very much.. try black Rit Dye. To get the most out of Rit, you need a white or a yellow. I'm sure yours turned out to be a funky forest green (I had the same weird green experience with a Bugout) . Also, if you want traditional blue.. you can get the Manix LW s110v version.

Your milage may vary.. but he Manix2 is my favorite blade out of Spyderco.. I have the very same model that you have and mine sharpens on Spyderco Sharpmaker like a razer.. I love this knife.. I own the Maximet version, CTS-BD1 version.. S30V G-10 Version, M390 G-10 versions and the 15V G-10 version.. I love them. I can not argue the price. but the ergos and the knifes themselves are top notch.. I own many different other blades but I tend to have A Manix 2 on me more regular than most

I agree, the manix 2 carries well. I could have gotten the S110 for $12 more ($166) but I wanted a more exclusive steel and one I could sharpen. You must have the Big Brown Bear 15V.

Hey Rusty, Spy27 is pretty good. Frequently compared to s35vn. Similar edge retention, easy to sharpen. I'm surprised they don't use it more. It really falls into the s30v/s35vn category of steels.

Spy27 is actually VG-10, but redone by CPM. VG-10 was used quite often back in the day by spyderco, especially in the police models. It's a Japanese steel. If you know anything about Japanese high quality steel its good stuff. I have the same knife and love the manix 2 lw. Give it time and that knife will become your best friend
@rustyminer
@rustyminer Год назад
Thank you for sharing. I can see a lot of similarities between the two steels. I like VG-10 and have the Spyderco Centofante 3 that is made in Seki City, Japan. I'm kind of keeping the Manix 2 in the drawer in case they stop doing Spy27. Love to have Spyderco's with low production numbers. If they continue to sell it for another couple years, maybe I will carry it more. Looking at the Spyderco Astute as a daily carry, but rather have a Centofante 3, so I might pick up a used one

Vg-10 was the starting point for the composition, but there are some substantial differences between the two steels. That being said - I absolutely love my Spydercos in vg-10.

You made a great choice. The manix 2 regular and lightweight is the best knife Spyderco makes. Para 2 is meh compared to it. If you use knives heavily and had both, anyone would understand why. Might seem pricey, and I agree with some of your sentiment, but it'll last the rest of your life.

I have a St Nicks Knives exclusive Manix 2 XL and I got the G10 handled version cuz it’s got so much Jimping, how’s the Jimping on the lightweight version???
@rustyminer
@rustyminer Год назад
Assuming the blade jimping is the same on both of ours. The jimping on the handle is found on the top near the front of the handle and on the bottom near the heal of the handle. That jimping is much more mild than the jimping on the blade. However, I really do like the FRCP handle. The knife is thin and grippy without being too thin or too grippy. I like it enough, I have been buying up a boat load of Zytel and FRN handled knives. Many people don't like FRN. Steel Will CutJack, SRM 9201, Ka Bar Dozier and more. Dig the feel in the pocket and the hand. I'd like a St. Nicks though, too. If you think you might get one of these, check out Lynch Northwest. You get the knife and a Teal Flamed Titanium clip for like $150. Less than I paid for this and much better looking.

I bought a screw together manix 2 lw last May, I don’t know why they dropped well, bhq dropped one in m4 that’s riveted 🤷‍♂️
@rustyminer
@rustyminer Год назад
Do you mean dropped close? Hard to say. I could back off the pivot on this one. It's adjustable. For comparison, I've picked up two Para 3's and adjusted one and not the other. The one I adjusted was dropping very quickly, the other took a lot of playing with. I haven't backed the pivot off, just on case Spyderco used some thread lock. I'd like to keep the knife "tight". It's much better than it was at the time of the video. Still not as good as the para 3's yet.
