I so value my elephant ears. My mother successfully grew them in front flower beds at her house.....in Florida....many years ago. They are sentimental for me......because of her. I named my plant.....Francine! This Fall I will probably have to divide up her large magnificent bulbs....towards the winter and contain them.....until early spring here. I welcome my service.....towards this beautifully green plant!!! Thank you for your instructions here. Ahna Atlanta/Georgia

Great video! I like to “chop and drop” the whole plant except the center stem. So I use a similar method to yours. (I’ll cut the leaves back to where they connect) Then I leave all that leaf matter which gives the soil back the nutrients they used. Whatever got dropped to the ground normally is totally decayed in a few weeks. They are such rewarding plants to grow.

Very nice informative video. I bought two Big Corms at Costco yesterday and today I am looking for information. I'm in northern VA. I may look for a couple abandoned plastic barrels on the Potomac river, cut the barrels, and use them for planters. Ten years ago I experimented with Luffa's and they were a success. Lots of new large yellow flowers everyday on a giant vine; and luffa sponges in late fall.

Excellent advice! I've always tried to just let mine dry out and you're right they take a long time and a lot of hot weather before they start to grow again. So that's a great idea of putting it in a pot I imagine even if it was in the basement where some light came in in the winter it would do okay. I do that with my gardenia trees because I don't have room for them in the house but in the furnace room there are windows and since the sun sets lower in the sky during the winter the sunlight streams in on them. They lose a lot of leaves but they come back in the spring when I put them outside. So thank you for your great advice

So I followed your overwintering instructions and am so happy to now have 3 beautiful ones already with leaves outside. Thank you fir that info. I did have a baby one that I overwintered with 3 small leaves. They are drooping and I’ve staked them. How can I prevent droopy leaves? Thanks so much for your videos!
@greatgardensforall

Yay! They need more light most likely if they are drooping.

I'm new to your channel and enjoy your knowledge and expertise. Question - you said in the video that this plant was 5 years old. Is that the age of the leaf or just the age of the bulb? If it's the age of the leaf, I thought you said you trim back the biggest leaves and leave behind the small leaves each season? Can you clarify? Thank you! Enjoy your channel.
@greatgardensforall
@greatgardensforall Год назад
The bulb age. The bigger the bulb the bigger the leaves normally, but even the pups add some bulk thru the season.

This is the 1st year that I have grown this plant and it has done extraordinary. Would love to overwinter it for next year but what do you do with the runners that are growing from the bottom and are shooting new leaves? I didn't know that they did that and I don't wanna cut them and ruin the plant ,please advise when you can ,thank you for the Video is very informative

One of my local Lowe's stores has their elephant ears 75% off the bulbs. There's supposed to be six or seven dollars so that means six or seven quarters is the cost I was trying to figure out the 25% I need to pay in quarters. So I bought a couple I bought one earlier this year and it brought it because I took it outside to try to grow it too soon so I cut the rotten part off covered it with cinnamon let it dry out there still a couple buys ready to shoot a leaf so I'm going to try to pot it now see if it grows

I live in Tunisia, North Africa. I have a covered balcony with bight light. It never frosts here, as you might imagine, and summers are HOT and often humid (I live right on the Mediteranian sea) Is your best guess that I might have luck keeping the plant in a large pot on my balcony/terrace all year? By the way, the best of this was situated in a large rotting tree trunk cut close to the ground. People would stop there cars just to gawk at it. This was in Missouri. Thanks
@greatgardensforall
@greatgardensforall 5 лет назад
sounds like the right conditions for the elephant ear! the most important is bright light but no direct sun and humidity. the bigger the pot the better. they will stay smallish in a smaller pot. Sounds beautiful where you are! Good luck!

Thanks for the info on elephant ears, and all your videos. My wife and I love your channel. We have elephant ears in a brick planter in the front of our house. It gets morning sun, afternoon shade. We have a problem with the younger leaves trying to grow at the base turning yellow and dying. It sits underneath the end of an awning, so it gets a lot of rainwater from the awning. Also, I fertilize regularly. We live in North Georgia in Zone 7b, and have had a very wet spring and summer. Could they be getting too much water? I have stopped hand watering those plants, so they’re only getting rainwater, but it hasn’t seemed to help. Could I be over-fertilizing? Any advice would be appreciated. 😀

Your EEs are amazing! Have you ever stored them not in a sunroom? Could you show how you would store the bulbs if you can't store the entire plant? I tried to keep a bulb last year and failed. I just washed it off and stuck it in a brown paper bag. When I planted it in the spring, it never had any growth. So I bought another plant this summer. I am hoping to keep it but I don't really have room to bring in the plant. I have so many other things I have to bring inside!
@greatgardensforall
@greatgardensforall 6 лет назад
+Kyra D thank you! I never stored them as bulbs but here are few suggestions. Do not wash the bulbs after digging. water may introduce rot. Dig in dry weather. put in a cardboard box when you bring indoors and let the soil and leaves dry. it works generally for all 'tubor like' plants. good luck!

Elephant Ear can actually be grown in a pond or bog setting. They love lots of water and many will over winter outside in zone 7 or above, best to mulch it heavily in winter in zone 7. If you take them indoors keep in mind they can be toxic to pets and children.
@greatgardensforall

Just wondering they are related to caladiums and I know caladiums if the soil temperature gets below 65 degrees in the summer or we have a cold Brady August and September by the time I get around to trying to dig out the caladiums they've already started to rot in the ground. So I'm wondering just how much cold these bulbs could take I think they're a little bit harder than caladiums
@greatgardensforall
@greatgardensforall 5 лет назад
Yes, they are in the same plant family Araceae. I also find caladiums much more fussy than elephant ear. both beautiful tho!

I have 12 growing in a planter in my living room, awaiting their planting outside when it warms up. I'm in Oregon. If they're "LEGGY" Do I cut them down before taking them outside? They have a large light and they're leaning towards it. They are getting huge too .. I'm kinda terrified I will hurt them or do something wrong before it gets hit outside.

So fun! Mine are little leggy too. You can leave two leaves and cut the rest. The idea is to have some leaves when you put them outside, they grow so much faster. Good luck!

🤔 if it’s kept as a houseplant it’s possibly doesn’t have enough light and humidity. Mine struggle through the winter indoors and bounce right back when I bring them outdoors. Is it possible to bring outdoors? If not provide as much light as possible and mist daily.
