Thanks for these wonderful insights! I have adopted an old Elephant Ear plant from my local shop (they put it on discount as it was getting too big and messy) and this plant had developed a long, very long, massive tuberous "trunk" which makes it look like a weird tree: it has four groups of leaves growing around the "trunk" at the base, and another group right on top of it. If it wasn't for the big lushy leaves, one could assume it's a palm haha Just now, thanks to your video, I understand that this "trunk" is a group of corms that were continuously agglomerating one on another through the years. Honestly, I don't mind how it looks, but I'm concerned about my plant's health. I'm noticing that as it grows, the group of leaves at the top is starting to become very heavy, causing the structure of the trunk to bend. Although I'm terrified of the idea of cutting it and killing my giant, I think there will come a time when I won't have a choice! Any advice is highly appreciated :)
I live in Panama City FL and Elephant ears grow naturally like weeds in my garden. They froze this winter from 17 degree night. Waiting to see it they will grow back.
Thanks for the video. I'm in zone 6b MA. Last year I did caladiums for the first time and its true they take their time. I like the elephant ears in your garden they look so beautiful.

Sadly i don’t have any really warm room in my house so my tea or coffee cup elephant ear will have to wait for warm weather. I just got a bag of mixed Caladiums from Home Depot yesterday, they didn’t have white ones and that’s what I really wanted but as a Gardener I had to bring something home , right . Good to know about the watering, I’m sure now that’s how I killed my corms before because I watered regularly and not just a little. Makes perfect sense that they don’t need much water without roots, thanks Yulia
You've inspired me to grow Elephant Ears this year! I always enjoy the pictures of them in your yard. I live in zone 5a and love pineapple lillies. I grow them in a huge pot and put the pot in the basement for the winter. I noticed that they are now showing growth. I never water after they are brought inside, so it amazes me. Even though we have 6 inches of snow here in southern Wisconsin I know spring will come someday! I always enjoy your videos!
I bought some elephant ears and caladiums from Costco and put them in soil a month ago(zone 4), I didn’t see any growth so got impatient and decided to see what’s going on underneath the soil and dug them up , to my surprise they are forming roots and growth point but I placed the bulbs/corms upside down , so I fixed them and put them back on south facing French door on top of heat vents, so far those looking promising!!
I love elephant ears too! Mine were gigantic last year bigger than me LOL! They just started peeking out of the ground this week it’s been so warm! I've been hesitant to try Elephant Ears here in Paris (6B?) after having grown up with them in Southern California as Perennials! Caladiums too💜. Now that I know I can dig and store them, I will definitely try this year, thanks to you and your advice. And I think we're about the same Zones.
Thank you for the detailed information. I overwintered two elephant ear as houseplants and it is helpful to know that their growth slows. I wasn't sure what was happening! When you put the lid on the Caladium container are there any holes in it. Is the lid latched? I've not experienced success with Caladium yet but I'm going to try again! They are just too beautiful!
Perfect timing ,I am looking for one like you grew as a house plant …had one last year but I killed it . Well, when I removed it for storage I thought I had cut it wrong so I tossed it ."..wasn’t til I saw your video that I saw I had done it correctly 😳🤨 will try again this year !
Love the videos you put out ,,I have elephant ears but they don’t seem to have big bulbs actually they don’t even have bulbs ,nor do my other big green leaf one like you showed that you had out doors were those the elephant ears
I grow and overwinter elephant ear in nursery containers, some 2 gallon size, some 10 gallon size. Debating now when to bring them out of the basement as I can’t put outside until the end of May. Northern Michigan, zone 5/6.
@@greatgardensforall thanks, I agree. If I bring them into a warmer room around April 1, they should be awake, growing, and ready to go outside by June 1.
last year i put them in pot too early like now, and had the hard time checking on them and not to rot them, I had plastic boxes all over my house, and felt exasperated with them, this year i start in may, they need warm.
@@greatgardensforall I live in Michigan as well. Can I plant straight in the ground around the same time? Or should I start in pots inside? Will they transfer well from pot to ground? This will be my first time trying elephant ears.
I bought a caladium a couple yrs ago, I don't think it liked my soil, or maybe it wanted more sun. This yr it's going in a planter, I'll move it around if I have to, to make it happy..
Excellent video! Don’t know how I missed it back in Mar; I sure could’ve used this info. Now I’ll be getting a very late start with my EEs and caladiums. Have you heard the term “de-eyeing”? Growers say you should cut out the largest eyes on caladium corms to force more leaves, otherwise, you will only have a few large leaves. Have you ever done this?

I found a nursery online that sells Colocasia Esculenta Black Coral, Black Magic, Black Stem, Coco, Diamond Head, Kona Coffee, Mojito, Tea Cup, and White Lava. Which ones would you recommend for a newbie? Which ones by the sidewalk did the teenagers take selfies in front of?

Thanks for the reminder to start up my caladiums! They take forever for me as well. Just when I’m about to give up on them, they peek they’re little heads out of the soil. I will try putting them in a container. Does it have to be clear? Do they need light at this point?
Hi Yulia, I don’t think you have a video about canna and begonia corms. Maybe you do not have those? I got a few bags last week at Costco and wondered when to start Canna. Surprisingly there are a bunch of videos on how to store but not when to wake up. If you ever did get the Begonia I would be curios what your experience is and how they looked once grown. There is nothing on Instagram or RU-vid. Take care
I don't have tuber begonia videos but I do grow them! I usually start them about six weeks before our last frost. I plant tubers making sure the top is exposed because the water can collect on top. Water very very very lightly because they are prone to rot. When I place them outside I bury the tuber about an inch for stability, they will be rooted by that time and not as prone to rot. I had several elephant ear plants last year and the deer did not bother them. I had them in pots on my patio which is near the woods but thankfully they were ok. I do think I may have sprayed them with Deer Out as I do with all of my hosta (which they love). Good luck!!
The leave of elephant ears are poisonous, full of oxalic acid, and bugs learn soon how deadly they are...even deer is smart not to nibble on them...if yes they get sick, poor deer...
Thanks so much for this, I have ordered caladiums which should arrive soon, my first time trying them. Would it be a good idea for me to put the pots on a heat mat while they’re inside? And if so just keep the mats on all the time? ❤
Yuliya, do you have a favorite supplier of good quality caladium corms you could recommend? I have some that I bought and planted last year, but they’re small and look dried up.
I dug my ears up for pots to bring inside and the next morning they all wilted, leaves were drooping and its been 4 days n still the same. I had to cut off a couple leaves bc they died..why would this happen?
I have never been able to store caladiums. They always dry out too much. Now I'm panicking because Home Depot doesnt have them this year. I did find a few small bags at Ocean State Job Lot, but not the best price for smaller bags. Is there a caladium shortage this year?
@@greatgardensforall I dont think so, all the other bulbs are are on display now. They usually have mixes, the Caroline Wharton, White Christmas and some others. This year nothing:(

Note on Caladiums: *Hurricane Ian affected the 2023 caladium crop and availability is still pending.
