Patara... I’ve had mice/rat problems at my house and at my deer lease trailer. I was told, have tried, and can verify, that Peppermint leaves or peppermint oil soaked paper towels in a cloth pouch will keep them out of the places you don’t want them. I also keep a few mouse traps baited with peanut butter set in areas where my food preps are set...!!! You might give it a try, because if nothing else, your home smell like peppermint...!!!

I use glass pickle jars (or any glass jars with a lid like the pickle jar) for canning. I reuse the lid (but no more than a couple times). This way I can give a jar to someone without giving up a canning jar. They can be reused! And yeah, they're great for storage for dry goods too.

I lost so much of my new pantry last year to mice. I was so frustrated and upset. Now everything goes into a plastic tub or a closed cabinet. I will always have a mouse battle in the fall being surrounded by corn fields, but at least I am better prepared this time. Also I found that a mix of corn meal muffin mix with baking soda will kill them without needing traps. The baking soda reacts with their stomach acid and they die. Hope that helps someone!

@@organics4you Absolutely correct. As a pest control operator, cardboard is one of my biggest pet peeves, especially banana boxes. A lot of stores put cardboard out for you to use as repack. You have no idea if the store has a roach problem, their warehouse has a roach problem or the vendor whose product was in that box has a roach problem. Food banks are notorious for using banana boxes to hand out food to people. Banana boxes are the worst for roaches because bananas are stored in refrigerator units at 55 to 65 degrees and 100% humidity, ideal conditions for breeding roaches.

Around pipes, drains and electrical lines, you can layer it with the spray foam insulation. They will start to chew through until they get to tne steel wool then stop. The foam actually helps hold the steel wool in place. Without the steel wool we had them chew through 4"-6" thick foam in under 20 min! Filled that hole with the combo and haven't had a mouse or field rat get in in15 yrs.

Fun Fact. When a mouse enters your home, the first thing it does is to do a run of the perimeter of that floor. (a path along all the outer walls). So leave a path along all of your walls so it can do so with the EXCEPTION of mice traps (Tomcat press and set). You will catch them the minute they enter your house. 🙂

As a sailor I was well aware you can't have paper or cardboard on board. Mice and cockroaches. Now I even freeze lunch bags before I use them to package flour in before sealing. I have shelves of canned foods and was worried about them falling off if accidentally bumped. So I went and bought some bungie cords from Home Depot and stretch them across the front. I used two on each shelf so I could stack cans and not worry about them falling off. I have a small area in the basement for pantry but I don't keep food or tubs on the floor. My mother began a 3 day ordeal of cooking, defrosting and cleaning the freezer, and some canning which we all got to participate in. Our advantage is that we could return food to the freezer and the basically frozen food was returned to the freezer for the second round of cooking down the freezer.

As a house flipper & doing construction cleaning, I can tell you that mice climb & scale brick too. So always do a detail look around to find any gaps around your home inside & out to fill in gaps that they can access. Mice hate anything metal which is why old schoolers used tinfoil & steel wool to plug up gaps around piping, etc. Just an added bonus tip: buy cheap mint oil (spearmint is my fave because it's sweeter smelling)& mix in a bottle of water. Spray around the foundation of your home, on your trash barrels, floor of your pantry or wherever you want to repel mice, bugs & even racoons, etc. It blocks any attractive smells & mice in particular hate it! After a rain I re-apply around my house & this has been a life saver! I found mice climbing my brick chimney & as soon as I started with the mint spray, I never see them anymore, YAY!

I am in the process of battling the mice issue. Your hints just verified what I have observed so far. I do need to be more mindful about using the cardboard flats to store jars. I now know why my grandmother had my grandfather custom build wood shelving to fit her preserving equipment and the several sizes of jars she used for canning. She was scrupulous about cleanliness and checking constantly (as a child I thought she was a bit over the top…sorry g’ma).

It helped learning that even Patera just tosses things into a closet and isnt always organized 🤣 I just recently faced and dealt with that demon lol. My fairly large basement floor was coverd, i had a narrow path throughout, last week I built shelves and got busy. Sometimes I think we just have to designate a time and not let anything else interfere til the job is complete. My basement had me feeling completely overwhelmed and it also was very misleading, I realized where I was short in several items once it was all organized I also discovered a few prepping items that i forgot I had. Thank you Patera and this community, I learn new things all the time from Patera and her followers that leave comments

FABRIC SOFTENER SHEETS!! I have been placing fabric softener sheets under my jars in different areas (generally 2 per shelf). I buy a box of Gain (need something with a strong scent) and just place the sheets around the pantry. I have been doing this for years on our homestead, which is surrounded by woods and fields, and I have never had a mouse. I do not have a cat. Not only are mice disgusting, but the pee as they walk. That urine will cause rust on the flat lids of the jars and tops of store-bought cans. They DO NOT like the smell of Gain!!😁 I think it smells nice but it not so strong that it enters any of my food items.

I don't know if someone has already mentioned this, but when you assemble the metal shelving units, you can turn the shelves over to have the lip around it. You will have some other areas where the structure of the shelf will cause the shelf to not be completely flat but that isn't a problem if you aren't using boxes or wood directly on the shelf. The cans or jars can set flat working around the wire that is now on top. If you want to stack for a second level, use the thin plywood there.

A couple of my strategies for dealing with mice are old coolers and filing cabinets ( cover any holes and make sure bottom solid and flat) Someday I will rip out all my cabinets and make sure any gaps covered securely with hardware cloth when replaced , currently installed to be mouse heaven.
