I had to learn this back in 85 I was a new nurse and had to give report to the dayshift. They were all old crotchety nurses as I gave report, would rudely interrupt. Then they would yell at me and I would dissolve into tears. Finally a coworker said. “Make them think you aren’t nervous or intimidated. If a problem pops up, don’t look rattled. It will help you think. It will also help the other staff look to you for leadership.”

This is excellent advice. I had the same experiences and learned that if they thought I cared what they were saying, it would upset me they would keep trying to intimidate me. I acted aloof and as confident as I could. Guess what? They started to treat me with respect. What a relief and a source of pride. I taught my husband this, and it worked for him, too. 🎉You are so right. My husband and I are also in the medical profession.

I have no confidence until I realize I’m allowing a room full of people to intimidate me. If I can think, ‘these people are purposefully seeking to intimidate me’, something within rises up and makes me stand taller with my chin up. I don’t know what happens but it works. It kinda makes me angry and it’s THAT, that gives me confidence.

@@stevepeterson5943 I'd done television before, but never live, it's an entirely different story. I'm not surprised to hear he threw up. Lots of adrenalin before a live show. I used to try and just sit by myself for at least half an hour before we had our production meeting and the show started. It's like public speaking I found I used to shake like I was freezing before speeches but once on the stage a weird kind of calm came over me. If I'm nervous now I try to summon that calm feeling back. I think the fact my parents encouraged me in public speaking helped me enormously.

❤ it's normal, I used to feel the same. Don't forget that people do not always focus on us, don't feel at the center of attention, sometimes we think that everyone is noticing our gestures, but that's not always the case. But definitely work on this, because a lot of talents, good ideas and opinions get lost if they are "inside" an insecure person. Remember not everyone is so bad, I always encourage "shy" people to express themselves. ❤ I wish you all the best.

I agree so much, I used to be on stage quite often and the thing that helped me most, was just remembering that anyone would be nervous in this situation and that gave me confidence because that meant I gave less notion to nerves and not being afraid of them. I could confidently look across the room and be myself. With camera's I had more issues, the 4 or 5 times I have been filmed by those big ones. Once, my hand started shaking with the mic in at and I had no mic stand. That was terrible and I couldn't relax.

Let me suggest that the crying and shaking voice are actually because your adrenaline is high and your natural instincts are to physically combat the person. No offense. Fighting is a natural human instinct. When you need to repress that, the repressed anger turns inwards. I would recommend being mindful of your breathing at such times. Google "square breathing." Better yet, leave the situation, go perform some exercise to burn off the adrenaline, and come back with a cooler head.

Also feeling physically strong and flexible helps - like even just doing a few stretches before means you have more control over how you move. I feel a lot more confident when I can move more intentionally.

I keep chiming in, ha : ) So I'm lanky, and kind of androgynous, never really felt masculine. Made a lot of adjustments over the years, books tapes, workshops you name it. And maybe the most influential thing i came across, which had a profound effect in many areas of my life was this. And it came from a classic book by Deepak, i was learning my body/personality type.( Specific to the Vata type) "Approach everything like a Master."

True confidence comes from facing and meeting our vulnerabilities amd follies So I Totally agree with Scott, if you are truely confident then you have no problem in appearing and experiencing yourself in not confident way and showing your vulnerability and goofiness etc..

Some really interesting suggestions here. I know I'm not the most confident person even though I'm probably one of the most capable (hopefully that dosent sound too big headed). I think it was Greg that stood out for me on this one. I realised my non verbal body language can be a bit jerky, like I'm looking around. Listening to you guys (and btw I like the curling toes practice) has made me realise just to stay still, it makes you look focussed, like you're not looking around all the time worrying about what other people think. I work in an office full of nut hobs including me so this video was really useful and I would really love it if you could do some more on confidence and self esteem ❤

I know I’ve been listening to you almost too much. When I let my dog out and I’m waiting for her to come back in the house and I feel like she’s had plenty of time but she’s just standing there staring at me, I ask her if she’s going to come in the house or just stand there staring at me like a psychopath!? Her response is usually the latter. 🤷🏼‍♀️
