Metal Bass Monday! Let's find out the key to understanding the chaotic evil of Technical Death Metal. We look into how it's composed, and the sound at it's core.
We'll break down how to figure out the hyper speed riffs and compositions, and how to write our own Technical Death Metal songs.
* What is the core musical vocabulary of Technical Death Metal?
* How can we identify the the notes the masters of the style are using, even at insane tempos?
* What do the great players in the style all have in common?

One thing i've realized about tech death, is that you're never ready to play tech death, tech death is ready to play you and have you trying to figure out a riff for months no matter how good you are
@TheJollyMisanthrope

The key is not to try impressing everyone with how complicated you can make a musical piece, and write something memorable. There's a reason why albums from bands like Atheist and Death are still relevant today.

Yup. Can't agree more. Being technical and br00tal without anything else produces music that is plain souless. Last year I was at a cocnert where Brutal death metal band played. They were technically amazing and sounded really good for the first minute . But after 4 songs of constant barrage of sound it became boring and tiring. Then came the Destroyer 666 as a headlining act, fairly simple blackened thrash. They blew them out of the water.
@TheJollyMisanthrope
@TheJollyMisanthrope 4 года назад
@@RodneyMcG True, but there are a lot of bands that have fallen into the same type of cookie cutter pattern of using the same techniques, writing similar sounding songs, just like a lot of genres. You have innovators, those that are influenced by innovators but take it in a new direction, and imitators. The last of the three tends to make up the majority of a scene at the end of the day. I love bands like Origin, Obscura, Cryptopsy, Nile, etc. I just can't get into bands that are just doing what they think technical metal should sound like and sounding way too mechanical. Maybe it's enjoyable for music nerds that want to dissect everything going on, but that's a pretty niche audience.
@TheJollyMisanthrope
@TheJollyMisanthrope 4 года назад
@@Jagdpz5 Destroyer 666 is classic, been listening to them since the 90's. You can be technical and brutal, just don't forget that hooks, and tasty grooves thrown in do a lot to add flavor/color to the song. When it becomes about being known as the band that has the fastest drummer, or the most insane guitarist, and not really about the music itself, then it becomes a spectacle to wow normies and bore the hell out of people that want something that sticks with them and encourages multiple listens. Tons of bands with drummers doing blast beats, fast double bass, fast single and double stroke rolls on the toms, etc. I'll take a drummer like Gene Hoglan over any of those guys because the dude knows how to be truly creative and and original on the drums.
@Jagdpz5
@Jagdpz5 4 года назад
@@TheJollyMisanthrope 100% agree. Best example I can think of right now of a band that is both technical and brutal is as you mentioned Death. I just wanted to point out that all this technical flash is worthless without some simplicity and catchiness to mix it up with an example.

Can’t wait for the interview with Jack Gibson. Exodus is one of my fave bands and I love his playing and his tone. Especially on Exhibit B: The Human Condition and the song Downfall where the band backs off and Jack steps forth with just crushing bass tone. Not to mention like Ellefson having to keep up with Mustaine. He has to keep up with Gary Holt and that in itself can certainly be no cakewalk. Phenomenal player.

So I went to studybass.com and played through various scales and Diminished and Blues were the most badass so I stuck to those. You cant really knock tech death musicians for "falling back" on a certain technique. You can look through any genre and find very distict patterns of notes that almost every band in that genre uses. Hell, even within a bands own discography. The core of every iron maiden song is the same exact pattern at different parts of the fretboard, and the same exact thing goes for a lot of heavy metal from that era. Its just part of that style or sound. Im not trying to argue your point or anything, just something that came to mind while i was watching. Great vid!
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 3 года назад
Wasn't knocking them, just pointing out that it isn't as random as it sounds, and there is a way to actually figure it out! And it's true, every style has a tonality at it's core and a specific set of tools.

It is about time someone did a video talking about this subject. You hear about it some what on guitar. But I think this is the first I have ever heard someone do a deep dive on it for Bass. And. Now I'm sure you can do this stuff on 4-string. But usually you will see people doing this stuff on 5-string, 6-string and 7-string basses and maybe beyond. Also you can do two handed tapping and what I love to do is take that tritone shape you were talking about and use both hands to spread it out a minor third or a major third. But try that with all major thirds to create the spacey augmented triad. It is a bit harder to do because your hands are rolling in an unnatural way. One band that uses augmented triads and the whole tone scale is Rings of Saturn. Also learn to play lots of chords on bass in a hard and rocky way by striking and strumming with your fingers or a pick. Power Chords Extended Power Chords, Octave Chords, Tritone Chords, and Augmented Chords. When you are playing single notes as a bass player, those chords can really fatten up the sound of what the guitar players are doing from time to time. Check this out and check out this guy's videos. I mean this bassists is just absolutely sick! And there are others like him out there. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fVCoX7_OaSk.html

@@RodneyMcG My pleasure. And you did mention the slow down melodic parts. During those times you will hear the guitarists make there notes sing with vibrato and what not. Now I do hear bassists melodically hit the higher notes from time to time. But I don't hear any bends or vibrato in those notes for bass. So make sure you add those in to make the bass sing as well. And maybe throw in some cool Billy Sheehan Pinch Harmonics in there. But this is not with Technical Death Metal, but all forms of music even Pop Music. When Bassists hit those higher melodic sounding notes, I don't hear any vibrato on those notes from time to time like you do with guitarists and other instruments. So I am still looking forward to a video on your perspective of chords for bass in metal, but also maybe you can talk about string bending and vibrato in melodic situations?
@johnfollis2357
@johnfollis2357 4 года назад
Also another thing to mention is the Basses. Usually Warwick or Specter are used in this style of music. Now that isn't to say that other basses can't be used they certainly can. It's just that those two get mentioned the most. But I would also put Ibanez and ESP in there as well. I mean heck! You can do basic with Yamaha Pacifica 6-String Guitar and a Silvertone By Samic 4-String P-Bass with the right setup and do all those chordal, tapping, sweeping, and singing melodic things I mentioned and still get a good result.

Great vid man👍 but still: dimished keys do have a root note though🤫
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 2 года назад
If you really know your theory, you know that only true in the most vague sense. Many people think of the starting note as a root, but that doesn't always apply in the full harmonic sense. There are 12 major scales. It would seem to follow there are 12 of any other type of scale, one for each chromatic note. However, this is not the case. Because of their symmetry, there are only 3 diminished scales and only 2 whole tone scales. Their symmetry makes diminished scales prime examples of “pitch collections” because we can easily see the repetitive nature of these scales. Each of the 3 diminished pitch collection (scales) can start (and end) on 8 different notes, corresponding to eight different chords (4 diminished chords and 4 “7(b9)” or “13(b9)” chords). Glad you enjoyed the video!
@BornAgainDude

Hm good point, but what if play let's say an E dimished chord on my bass? because i do pick a root note of course, and when i tell the guitarist "it's in e dimished" He will probably use the e Note for orientation doesn't that count as a root?
