As a decade-plus member of Talkbass, all I can say is "right on". The BS level there is higher than ever, and it's always been pretty high (it got worse, and more toxic, when they added a "like" button). One of my favorites is the vast misunderstanding of the saying "tone is in the fingers". You get people yammering about bone structure and stuff. The one that drives me craziest is the idea that you need a different bass for every genre of music you play, an idea that benefits manufacturers, but certainly not players. And apparently in every town but mine, band leaders are super picky about what brand bass you play and how many strings it should have. I've been gigging since the early 90s and I've never come up against that one.
@RodneyMcG

Perfect examples. People have brought up Talkbass a lot in the comments. It can apply, but most of what I said was directed at facebook groups and "Metal" production forums all over the web. There's defintely some talkbass problems as well though. I used to read it alot. There's defintely good info if you ask a very specific question (at least one that doesn't set off the hipster alarm) but there's more than a bit of dinosaurs acting like what they wish the music world looked like is actual fact. Funny, when you get in the trenches, it never seems to be accurate. Makes you wonder if they know so much, why it never resembles reality, and how they find time to practice and gig when they spend so much time pontificating on the internet.

It was after watching your video telling us to ditch using tabs that I listened to your advice. Six months later, my playing is a lot better, and so is my musicianship. Great advice! Playing in general I find more rewarding and enjoyable to figure songs out with my ear and not by someone els' tabs that are often wrong.

Well said, can only agree. I tried a Dingwall bass 2 years back when I just started bass playing and loved it. I didn't know about the DingGlass hype, I just knew I loved the bass. I didn't buy it because I nearly got a stroke from seeing the 2800 euro price tag. I ended up with a way cheaper Ibanez that served me very well. Still, I keep thinking of that Dingwall and while I can easily afford it, it's probably better not to since I already got 7 awesome basses. Fun fact: 1,5 year ago I shopped for a proper bass head and speaker cabinet. I had my sight on Darkglass stuff and visited a huge music store in Germany where I could try out many combinations. Turns out, I found the Darkglass bass head to be extremely disappointing, no punch or power in the tones at all. And the Dorkglass speaker cabinet? A salesman literally told me they stopped selling them because they broke down so much. They weren't worth it, his exact words. I ended up with Mark Bass stuff.

Can’t help think of the saying “fuck a hero, be yourself”. So many people want *that* distinct sound as you say, our Dingwall/Darkglass friends, whatever happened to hours upon hours twiddling knobs on pedals and trying different pedals/pickups/pickup blend/fiddle with the tone knob/etc to find your own sound and tone, rather than doing what been done a million and one times.

So Agree with you Brother, I fell down this rabbit hole looking at Darkglass Pedals, which I do think sound nice, But Not quite the Vibe I'm looking for, I have the Tech 21 YYZ and the DP-3X for my dirty tones which I love, but was really looking for something with a great Tight Clean Tone and kept getting pushed to look at darkglass, then every demo was the Dirt channel, I do have the DG harmonic booster which fits nicely into my rig, But still want something on my board that I can go to for a good Clean tone for the Other styles that doesn't sound flat. anyway Tanks for you input.

Agree. I tried a dingwall, didn't get on with them at all. I like my P basses with a pj set up. I own 4 darkglass pedals. They have their place on and off my pedalboard. The two pieces of gear that I find I get the most useful tones for anything I play in my band is the Billy sheehan drive and my sansamp bddi together. And recently the Tronographic Rusty Box on it's own. Just find it has a nicer drive section than any of the darkglass pedals. Great video as always mate. Glad to see you're well. 💪🏼🤘🏼

Couldn’t agree more with this. Dingwall and Darkglass are great pieces of gear but I can’t tell you how many videos/clips I’ve seen of the same sound over again. It’s not everyone who uses them but it’s definitely a vast majority. For me I’ll be sticking with my Schecter, Ampeg, and if I’m doing something with metal and want something with some extra grit I’ll include my good old SansAmp. That combination has worked for me for years, no need to spend thousands to mimic what my gear can do already. Plus for me I just prefer that set up. It has worked for me for years, no need to fix what isn’t broken. Great video, man and glad to see you back at it. Hope you’re doing well!

The crazy thing is Dingwall and Darkglass are both very versatile instruments. Tony Levin is playing Dingwall and Darkglass, and he sounds nothing like what you'd expect those to sound like. But you never hear anyone dive into the range of sounds these instruments can make. It's always just that same 1 modern metal tone.

@@RodneyMcG I dont think Lee use a tone of effect, he has his incredible fingers, bass and a tube DI he bas for years if I am correct. I have got some darkglass pedal, some tech21 too (bddi, dUg). Now I just get the darkglass and everytime I Heard a bass sound I like it has kind of the b7k growl and tightness. I just don't like boosting a lot of 3kHz on it but more 1, 1.5k. it has more grind and less clank that way to me. The dUg is a nice pedal but the compression is abusive and the mid scoop make it work perfectly or not at all (my guitarist has a really scooped tone too, can't work with that) I have use the Geddy Lee MP40 from the release of it to now, really nice unit. I just think that for the Low G# my band want to tune to the B7k tightness and precision would work better, have you any other recommandation ?

When it comes to opinion though... people get so damn defensive of their favourites, it's painful! I run for health and fun(!) - there's so many people quick to tell you what the right running shoe is despite it being incredibly personal. My advice is usually "this shoe works for me, and I find it useful for x/y/z". People could do with being a bit more chill and less absolute!

Old peaveys are great, just heavy. Remember, people used to tour the world with that gear. SWR is quality as well. Hartke makes some really good combo amps that are super light weight and have line in/ etc for practicing tunes, etc. If you are just going for a bedroom studio, maybe some amp sim / computer based options are something to think about? You can get some great sounds inexpensive, and then listen through monitors, headphones, etc. For hardware, the best idea is always just listen to some demo videos to narrow it down, and then try it out for yourself, or order something from a place with a good return policy if you wind up not likely it. @swissarmyknight4306 I'm the not-so-proud owner of a '17 4003 Jetglo. Within a 3 gig span: The input jack wiring came loose, the neck pickup died, the D tuning key gear locked up, the neck needed adjustment 4 times, bridge pickup cover broke in two (It's cheap plastic, painted to look like metal), it broke 2 E strings during one gig and the body contour dug into my side like a rusty anvil. Technically, it was my 3rd 4003 because the first 2 were sent back due to massive QC issues. Apparently, they now apply the neck lacquer with a fire hose. My bass tech told me he would resign if I brought it on the road again. It's basically a rotten potato in a tuxedo.

To be honest I've neve really liked the sound of the B7K when I had to play through it. Also if I had the money for a dingwall I would probably find a luthier and have a custom made bass to my liking. BTW is that a double p bass in the background??? I wanna hear how that sounds! The beat the hell out of your bass thing is really a matter of what you enjoy, I play with 160,120,90,70 for b standard, stupid heavy and I enjoy beating the shit out of my bass because I like the way it feels and sounds. I’m fully aware I could use a lighter gauge and conserve my energy and get the same sound but I don’t like how dainty it can feel. I play my homemade fretless basses that have custom Seymour Duncan p bass pickups, based on the spb2 but with custom no hole covers like an emg. Because of that I don’t get that pop on the pole pieces which helps when you like to hit hard; I use 2 compressors and a 2 channel 15 band graphic with a hartke lh1000. I have a 2x15 crate cabinet with eminence speakers. Do I recommend that to anyone? By no means. But does it work for my band?? Absolutely. Never follow stupid trends, use what you enjoy!!

As a Darkglass user. Believe it or not, you can get more sounds out of them! I use the X and whilst it does do the Nolly thing. If you just lower the high pass filter, you can get a woolier Mesa bass tone. It also has great adaptivity to different basses. I’ve used Warwick, Yamaha, Sterling. They all sound quite different whilst being good in their own way. (It keeps the instrument’s natural characteristics which is why the double D combo is so common and identifiable. Yes I’m tired of the same sounds. But the gear themselves has way different sounds than what you hear always nowadays.

My favorite forum thing is “A high pass filter solves everything.” Not that I’m against them…I use one myself…but they’re not going to make your $100 practice amp as loud as an SVT and 810, nor will they prevent you from blowing your speaker if you push it too hard. Anyway, I have been a longtime contributor on Talkbass, and while it has its share of BS, there is a core of people who know what they’re doing and do their best to bust myths. And as someone who occasionally gets their own myths busted, I have no problem owning up to it. But most of these Facebook forums are garbage. I actually feel bad for people who are looking for advice on them because the SN ratio is too high to overcome. At any rate, you said what needed to be said, except one thing…if you have a bass and amp that works and has enough guns for the gig you’re doing and it doesn’t sound good, it’s not the fault of the gear.

@@RodneyMcG I've got A Dingwall and Darkglass. BUT! I am not going for modern djenty tone. With that gear I wantedto bring dirty, packed with low end sound which you can compare to concrete mixer which is packed with bricks and debris :D also it is pretty easy to dial in Pantera like sound, Primus sound or other great sounds. Ok, but now let's stop with defending Dingwall and DG, they are good for me and these are good for me. Whenever someone asks me about a pre amp or other gear, I give few examples that I have chance to experience. Hence, if I didn't go for DG and Dingwall, I would pick up SanSamp, Aguilar or the new Ampeg SVT preamp pedal, all of these are great!As for basses I would go for Spector (the new multiscale is freaking amazing!), I very good friend has a Spector Legend and it plays sooo smoothly and has punch like Mike Tyson. ESP Basses are also good way to go I considered to pick their multiscale bass. Also Ibanez has many very good series from SDGR to BTB and EHB. There are many options and whenever someone is asking me I am giving above examples and more. This is music you just cannot tell that there is the only tre way to achieve great sound. I think that, the thing is it depends a lot on your skills, playstyle and genre. You always need to take into consideration what sound will suit the best in the songs you play and how it will elevate the overall sound of your band. Used to use a B7K myself and it's a nice lil thing, but I don't see myself plugging it in too much these days. Just got tired of hearing that same song from everyone and their mother, brother, kids, fiance, dog, cat, goldfish, colony of ants who just discovered what a bass is. The amount of covers and clips I've seen of people who clearly have work to be done on their technique and fundamentals yet own a Dingwall is a little ridiculous. Think this ends up being a commentary on people in general. A lot of parroting, low-effort plugs that make them feel like they're part of the group even when they don't really know what they're talking about. Long as they get the validation of others agreeing with them. I'd rather just play my bass the way I want to play it. Been doing it 18 years, I can figure things out for myself well enough.

You sound very much like the people you are advocating against...however after a lively debate with a certain, very expensive speaker cab CEO/maker about the physics of sound refraction through solid walls, who was completely mistaken and proceeded with the mega-gaslight 'everyone on the internet is wrong, apart from me' vibe, whilst proffering very bad science to a scientist and engineer, with a lifetime of experience in the field and their unsuspecting customers - this cuts both ways. This type of swami clownery is the price to pay for the internet.

I rail against people giving out bad info and ramming thier know nothing info down everyones throat, with zero backing or evidence. I then advise to follow your own thought, opinion, and research based on actual proof and demonstrations, and hold no one's opinion sacred. Somehow those are similar? I'm always open to criticism, but I don't think I can follow you on that one.

@@RodneyMcG Wouldn't an internet 'expert' only present themselves in the same self-righteous way and denigrate all the other 'experts'? 'Daddy' isn't 'cleaning house' but contributing to exactly the same phenomena as that being described by ranting in the same hysterical way. I came across your channel by accident and I have nothing against you; maybe you are as great as you make out but it's not for me. I play bass, guitar and keys so I guess the algorithm thinks I'd be interested in some heavy metal bass tapping or some similar nonsense. To me the whole 'metal' thing is to music what WWF is to quantum physics. I don't own a Dingwall or Darkglass product and I didn't purchase my taste and de rigueur standard issue outfit from a dedicated isle in a supermarket.

1. You obviously have no discernment for what is or is not sarcasm or humor. 2. I can't understand why you watched to begin with seeing as though the algorithm can't physically force you to watch something. 3. I'm going to need you to point out where I am 'hysterical " unless you mean in a humorous way, and then I would have to agree! 4. You obviously have some kind of superiority complex, and feel the need to piss on other forms of music to have some sort of self validation. You actually sound like some of the people I'm talking about, so your outsized anger and snobbery makes sense. It's really kind of sad that you feel the need to do that just to get yourself some form of malignant, pseudo self esteem. Even worse that you sit on the internet to do it. Some personal reflection and inner work might be in order. I wish you the best with it. It doesn't seem like it's actually making you happy or healthy.

@@RodneyMcG I wasn't forced to watch your video but thought it might offer some insight. I'm not particularly angry or bitter about anything, rarely post online and all I said was 'it's not for me' regarding your content. I did make an extravagant statement about taste but I'll stand by that. I really am sorry if I upset you but I think you have to be careful (and I mean myself as well here) whom you patronise. The majority of people on the internet may be gullible newbies or just gullible, or whatever, but certainly not all people are ill-informed. I love the culture of music and musicianship and I would always advocate art over commodity. I wish you all success in future with your channel and endeavours. Take care.

The reason I don't trust you (or any other RU-vidr) any more than I do the forum drones is specifically because you don't have to prove the points that you make... you just have to produce content that people like. You have a vested interest in presenting opinions and demonstration that the viewership agrees with, regardless of whether they are true, practical, or methodical (when it comes to the proof part). I've seen my fair share of demos that unfairly represented gear, explained information incorrectly or incompletely, or had information simply not exist (such as seeking demos of a specific pedal, amp, etc. and not being able to find it.) But saying that you should get all your information from a single source like RU-vid or Talkbass is like saying that your social life should only consist of friends from work OR your significant other OR your family. That advice would be impractical, unfulfilling, and unhealthy. Internet gear forums have a shitload of valuable information that is 100% correct and usable, just like RU-vid does. Being able to sort out relevant vs. irrelevant information is a skill that a person needs to have, especially in today's media/information climate, and saying "You Should Not Go On Bass Forums" simply because you are not able or can't be fucked to think critically about what you see/read is just... weak, both of character and of mind. Go, hear, read, watch, get all the information you need to come to the preliminary, researched-but-not-experienced conclusions that you need to, and understand all the viewpoints-- whether it means understanding why they are right, why they are valid, or why they are wrong. That's what you need to do.

We have to recognize that Darkglass is the best in bass amplification currently. It is the SVT/Ampeg of this era. While all the other companies were resting on their laurels and selling you the same amp from 1969 like Ampeg, Darkglass is pushing the envelope forward. Ampeg claiming you couldn't make The SVT better while other boutique manufacturers making pedals sounding identical to the SVT, in a small footprint. As for Dingwall... they're definitely a step up from vintage instruments with greater tone and ergonomics. It's also easier to play because of their banjo 🪕 frets. I still prefer Warwick though.
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 7 месяцев назад
We don't have to recognize something that is completely opinion. It's the best according to YOU. Darkglass did something interesting and has a defineable sound. It's not for everybody. There's far more out there other than the 2 options you listed. Trace Eliiot, Hartke, Markbass, GK, the list goes on. Dingwall also created something new and interesting. It's not for everyone, just like Darkglass. There's nothing wrong with either product. I would offer that your argument applies exactly to the people i'm criticizing. So called bassists are resing on thier laurels by buying the same gear, to get the same sound over and over again rather than trying to create anything new with those pieces of gear, or god forbid, trying out any of the other multitude of gear choices available. We've never had more options for sound as metal bassists, and never been less original. Ironic.
@JVMC_ZR1
@JVMC_ZR1 7 месяцев назад
@@RodneyMcG The reason you said it's not for everyone is because you have only heard Darkglass and Dingwall in a Metal context. I use my Darkglass rig in blues, Jazz, etc, and the rig has all the "warmth", "tube sound", and "punch 👊" that people are after. Same thing with Dingwall. Lee Sklar is a perfect example of how great Dingwall can be on sessions outside of Metal. If you are going to bring in other manufacturers, don't bring in mid tier manufacturers like Hartke, Markbass, and GK. At least bring in manufacturers like Mesa, Bergantino, Genzler, and Eich. At least that way it sounds like you have good taste for gear 😂. Gear is a lot like the rides at a Theme Park. There is usually a line for the best gear/rides. Before the Alpha Omega pedal was created, it took 5+ pedals to get that sound. It's just a little convenient to just have one.

The fact that you have to make so many wild assumptions about what I think, says a lot about why you are arguing this position. Your comment is nothing but a string of logical fallacies and pseudo intellectual condescension. I've mentioned multiple times how Lee Sklar and John Taylor use them and get their own sound, proving the laziness of the players who don't do anything new with the tools given. Sorry, I get that you have some unearned sense of superiority, but you're not educating anyone on anything, and don't have some massive depth of knowledge others don't. It's a bad play to argue from a position of assuming the other person's ignorance when you know nothing about them, or their knowledge base. Then you go on to some gear elitist bullshit because I didn't mention gear that was up to your "standard" as if to just talk about variety I have to mention your fan boy favorites. Did you get your check from them for defending their honor all over the web yet? You're not having a discussion, your just being a condescending ass. Funny, this all sounds exactly like the people I'm talking about in the video. No wonder it seems to have burned your ass. Discussions about gear are also like a theme park. There's a sign at the beginning that disqualifies you if you don't meet certain height or health standards. This discussion requires you not to be a condescending jackass that makes himself feel better about his life by being an obnoxious know it all on the internet with strangers. Being a gear fanboy is embarrassing. Time for some personal reflection@@JVMC_ZR1
