Right on spot! Call me old but there's nothing like owning what you pay for. Been playing bass for the last 35+ years and coming from the culture of buying vinyls, cassettes and cds... and still do. Nothing wrong with the changes, but just still enjoy reading the booklets and looking at the pics. I know I'm a nerd, but that's something lots of us do not understand. I guess though, that what we're experiencing now is just the beginning of the future. In the meantime, still enjoying the way I own music. Thanks for your videos, really appreciate them.

Man you articulated perfectly why I quit making talking-head content on RU-vid. It used to be "art" to me and I made videos I was proud of. Over time it gradually turned into "content", and no body seemed to want to pay attention to anything I had to say. It got to a point where RU-vid lost all it's meaning for me because I saw channels with a robot voice reading literary work they didn't create them selves, or channels posting clips of videos by other people and repackaging this as their own "content", and these channels explode and do very well while my original work doesn't get seen. All of this lost it's meaning for me. I remember the exact words I said to myself just before I deleted my videos, "Everything on RU-vid seems like "Content. I didn't sign up for this to be a content creator. I'm an artist." I'm pretty much done with all social media. I deleted all my accounts. The social media addiction has been one of the main issues for me and I had to get sober. Now, the only social media I do at all is upload bass cover videos. And I still watch good channels such as yours.

It's definitely got it's pitfalls and can do more damage than good sometimes. I'm glad you are able to find what's right for you and act accordingly.

I think the heavy resurgence of vinyl purchases is an indication that people are longing for the physical copy again.

Absolutely all of this. I'm still trying to make sure all my CDs are on FLAC, and I just got a 256 GB SD card for my phone so I can just move that around for a while even between phones with my core library. I'm also starting to rip my vinyl LPs to FLAC.

Example of a cut release that many did not realise many minutes more that comes to mind - 'Bleed' by Meshuggah. The music video led many to believe that the song ended at that point.

Atheist's entire discography recently got removed from Spotify and I noticed the forgetting happening immediately. I had forgotten about them until I saw a cover of Mother Man on RU-vid and was reminded of their existence. I love Atheist, I need to find a vinyl of their music ASAP so I don't risk forgetting them again

What I found out about myself is, that I value something completely different, when it is on a physical medium. Be it books, movies or music. I pay more attention to an album, when I have to open the case and take the CD (or vinyl) out of it. I see the artwork the artist chose for it, I might see the members of the band in the booklet, the "Thank you" - notes, maybe a few written lines... I can leaf through the booklet and experience the music differently. I am made aware that actual people put their work into this and put their artistic vision onto something you can touch and that can't be deleted without force. When I stream something it is in the worst case just a collection of notes in a specific pattern. Also I like the collection aspect of it. Seeing for example the Iron Maiden discography starting with their debut and ending with their latest output infront of me as vinyls... I see four decades of art. I can see the changes they've made, their improvements, maybe their struggles. I can glance over the covers and somehow hear it. Maybe I can see a kink on a cover and remember that I dropped the case twenty years ago or I remember how I excitedly bought an album the day it came out. And then there's a connection between music history and my personal history. Yesterday I found an old metal magazine from 2000 that's dead now, at home with a cd. I remember the store I bought it at and I remember why I bought it (it looked evil and costed 6.66.. yes I was very young). I looked through the pages, put the CD on and remembered how I felt back then, how I felt about the music. A few songs on it were from bands without record deal and they possibly never got one. The band is forgotten, the band members might only think about it every few months... but in there, their name is written and their song is on a physical copy. Without it I would have forgotten about it. I fear I'm a helpless romantic about that stuff, because I could go on and on... however, yes, buy music.

Since my CD player got stuck I am not able to listen to them and I'm not really interested in buying another one. Of course I rely on streaming (which I like it because bass lines are more audible to my ears) but this situation makes me wanna buy vinyl records because I've never had them and I'm curious to listen how different they sound from the rest.

I like getting DVDs for the commentary, and I like buying CDs and vinyl for the sound quality. I feel like VHS is going to make a comeback. Digital remasters of old animated movies look so sloppy. Some of the old animations used to be hand drawn slide by slide, idk why you'd ever change that. Some physical stuff is inconvenient but is objectively better, but Amazon has shown that when it comes to products convenience is always better than quality.

I noticed albums missing a few years ago. I was looking for a certain fear factory song / album. It was weird. They had all the albums except that one. I thought it had something to do with record label or the band not getting enough $$. I wasn’t sure. Very odd.

Never stopped to buy records but some time ago I've started to buy movies just because of all that you said in video is true :) Fun fact: sometimes there's totally opposite situation. Deicide's Once Upon the Cross is available on streaming but you can't find it in record stores, only second hand. The reason for that is band's then line up is conflicted and they didn't agreed to do re-release. P.S. Great t-shirt Sir.
@RodneyMcG

Exactly! A point I should have included in the video. When people aren't buying and the album is out of print, then streaming drops it. Game over.

I may need to go to records and a record player because I was buying cds up until recently when noticing new cars I was willing to shell money out for didn’t have a CD player. I’m kinda nervous cds go away. Sucks. At the risk of sounding like a “ok boomer” I dislike a lot of modernity.
@RodneyMcG
@RodneyMcG 2 года назад
That's a subject for a whole other rant. Slogan's like that aren't arguments. They are substitutions for one. Everything new isn't better. I'm still waiting for the "ok boomer" crowd to start gutting places of all their Louis the XVlll antiques and replacing them with Ikea.

I love LPs because the covers are so much better for seeing the art. And my old eyes can read the liner notes! It makes me happy more music is on vinyl now. CDs are convenient because they take up less space, but that tone arm needle making contact with the licorice pizza is special. I do use streaming to listen to bands I am not familiar with.

Great video. I agree with alot of what you said. The love of buying physical copies of music has never went away for me. Also going to live music and movies. I really only buy the movies that I will watch more than twice anymore. I guess I'm enjoying the best of both worlds because I'll hear something on Spotify and like it and then go buy the album. Or I'll go see a movie and then decide if I'd watch it again then buy it.

There are a lots of albums and/or song missing. Like Dead Again from Type O-Negative or My Last Words from Peace Sells (i guess it's because of the lyrics in that case). But yes, i've noticed, it even happens with high profile bands and artists. One of the worst thing that happened to me on Spotify was i was unable to find unremastered versions of Megadeth records, So far so good so what, and Rust in Peace remastered just suck.

Another thing i've noticed is Thick as a Brick was divided into every indovidual part. So, instead of having 2 20:00+ songs you have 30 around 1:30 songs, so it adjust better to Spotify's buisness model. They literally butchered the album to make it more profitable.
