In this video I show you how I fixed the vapor barrier on my E39 M5. This is actually a common problem with these cars especially if a window regular has been replaced, and the vapor barrier isn't sealed properly. Overall this process was straight forward, but I would highly recommend finding a product that does NOT smell. I had to deal with a chemical smell for several days after I fixed this.

Thanks for watching! Just so you know, so far my fix has worked. I have been driving the car for a few weeks now and no water has come in!

Shifted Perspective glad you aren’t getting the water. I still recommend you ensure all the rubber seals are fully intact, and that you don’t have water inside the bottom of the door.

I had the same issue at my 530d e39 from 2002. I ve found out the right back side water on the floor exactly like yours but after finding out that the windows don t open anymore and central locking was working just on a door ! ! ! The problem is that now you have to take out the right front seat and plastics that hold the floor carpet and lift it up because you will find A FEW LITTERS of water in the floor that floods all the modules there ! The floor carpet is very tick with foam and it will hold a few liters of water easily. I had 2 electric heater fans 2000W each one and put them to blow on the foam under the carpet for like 2 days ! If you have access to compressed air you can use that to speed up the drying on the tick foam. Now I have to take out the dashboard to change the heating core as I have been stupid enough to put to much coolant in the tank and it did not had enough space to hold the pressure. I have a spare parts car so I have the part for free.... but it will take a lot of work to replace it.

Great job man! The barrier that you resealed is nothing more than a dust shield. Water can still get through the holes where the plastic rivets mount the door panel. Your main issue is you must have a bad window seal, allowing excess moisture to build up in the bottom of the inside of the door. This, combined with a possibly bad door seal, will allow the water that pools up in the door to leak into the interior. Remember, these doors are not water tight via that barrier that you resealed. You need to look into your rubber door seals to fix the problem. Fun fact: there are rubber grommets at the bottom of the door that you can pop out to drain the pooled water (if any). I currently own 4 e39’s, and have had others throughout the years, one of which has 317,000 miles. So basically everything rubber has had to be replaced.

Its normal that you have water in door. I think that draining holes on botom of the door (perhaps were rubber seal is) are clogged with dirt. And then water cannot escape, so it climbs to the door trim.

Next time squeeze the foam as much as you can, and put some papers under the carpet and have them changed every 2 days :)

Good video, but it is best to use the proper sealant. Fortunately, the local BMW dealer gave me enough for no charge. It resembles a stickier version of plumbers putty and can be rolled between your hands to create the proper bead size needed. The sealant you used may work, but you created a nightmare for next owner in terms of ever needing to change the window lift. They will need to buy a new vapor seal at the same time.

Why don't just drill a hole in the door shut frame, rust proof it and you're home laughing :)
