Hi, Dr. Saeed. I am Lydia, very glad to watch your latest video. Because I just finished the revision of my chapter two LR. I can clearly understand your four steps and I am happy I followed the right track. At the beginning of preparing the proposal, I had the habits of summarizing the literature map based on the themes, research questions, methods and findings. Then, based on the snowballing, I found many good qualities of the literature in my field. I save the PDF files into my endnote and classified based on the themes. Next, I am organizing the titles and subtitles of chapter 2. Of course, I reordered many times. In the process writing, i need to reread the related the literature. The most difficult thing, i think is how to reorganize the the selected ideas. I think i still need to improve the Step 4. I have also have a question, dr. Sometimes, the benchmark literature includes several points to the section of LR, such as the participants, the research themes and the theoretical framework, I need to mention it sevral times. Maybe the first time i need to state sb did sth and the results. In the following, i only need to select the most related part, right? Your example in the article is clear, summerize one idea with several references. But, i noticed some PHd thethis use one paragraph to state one literature. All in all, your explanation is detailed and valuble. I bear in mind that the fuction of LR is to show you are well understood the good literature in your field, and your critical review of these literature. Most importantly, you can find the gaps and state the significance of your research. Thanks a lot for your sharing. Your are an great researcher and professor.

Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed the literature review video. And congratulations on finishing the revision of your Chapter 2 literature review; it sounds like you're making excellent progress. It's wonderful to hear about your systematic approach to gathering and organising the literature. I should invite you to my future webinars to share your experience of writing literature review. Regarding your question, I understand that many PhD students summarize past studies one by one in one to two paragraphs. However, this is exactly the area that needs improvement. As you know, instead, using a critical review and thematic approach in writing the literature review is recommended. There are three reasons for adopting this approach: First, it significantly improves the quality of your work and increases the likelihood of impressing your supervisor and examiners. Second, it offers you an opportunity to practice writing a literature review correctly, which is essential for your future research career. Third, by employing a critical review and thematic approach, you can easily convert your thesis into articles and publish them in high-ranked journals, as some of my PhD students have done. I understand that it may not be easy to follow this approach initially, but with practice, you will get better at it. Once again, thank you for your kind appreciation. On another note, have you started your data collection? At what stage is your work? I'm eager to know more about your research progress.

@@saeedsharif Hi, dr, Thanks for your detailed feedback. I agree with you that critical review of the literature is important. I am so lucky to meet you on my PHd journey. With your guidance, i revised the problem statement and background information. The process is hard and tortured, but it is worth, i think my points are more clear and logic. Now I am waiting for the notice of my supervisor to get the data collection certificate. I collected the data,but my SV suggested me to narrow down my first RQ,so i need to do some follow-up interviews. I am going to return back China next month and preparing my article. All in all, many thanks for your kind help to the Phd candidates.

Thank you Prof. Sharif for this helpful video. I have struggle that sometimes I find a citation in a paper interesting that I want to cite too. Can I cite it directly or do I need to go back to the original work and read the entire article? Because I feel it seems unethical to apply directly, but exhausting to trace the original works just to confirm a short sentence.
@saeedsharif
@saeedsharif 11 месяцев назад
You're very welcome! I'm glad you found the video helpful. Regarding your question about citing a citation from a paper, I understand the dilemma you're facing. Ideally, in academic writing, it's best to cite the original source directly. However, there are situations where we might cite a secondary source (a citation from another paper) in our work. For example, you may not have access to the original source, or it could be behind a paywall that exceeds your budget. In these cases, you can cite the secondary source or clearly indicate that you are citing the information as cited in the secondary source. For example: "Alex (as cited in Sarah, 2020) found that...". By the way, citing a secondary source should be a last resort, and it's always best to verify the information firsthand if possible.

Dear Prof., Can you please make a detailed video about how we can use mind maps like Miro in this process?
@saeedsharif
@saeedsharif Год назад
Thank you for your suggestion. I will make a video on using Miro for writing literature review. Indeed, when it comes to structuring a literature review, I have found Miro to be an excellent platform. Its features and functionalities lend themselves well to the structure, and organising the information. With Miro, you can easily create mind maps that help you outline the key themes, concepts, and arguments present in the literature. The platform allows you to visually connect ideas, create hierarchies, and arrange your thoughts in a logical manner. This visual representation makes it easier to see the overall structure of your literature review and identify any gaps or areas that require further exploration. Also, Miro facilitates collaboration, enabling you to work with peers or supervisors on your literature review. You can share your mind maps, invite others to provide feedback, and engage in discussions to refine your ideas. This collaborative aspect is particularly useful when seeking input from supervisors or when working on group projects. Furthermore, Miro's user-friendly interface and intuitive design make it simple to navigate and manipulate your mind maps. You can easily add and rearrange information, attach relevant documents or links, and customise the appearance of your mind map to suit your preferences. This flexibility allows you to adapt your literature review structure as needed, ensuring coherence and clarity in your work. Once again, thank you for the suggestion. I will make a video on using Miro to enhance your literature review process. 🙂

6:50 Critical LR is all about "relevance" and "significance". What do you mean by "significance"? How to showcase the "significance" in our write-up?
@saeedsharif
@saeedsharif Год назад
Hi Anita, That's a great question! In fact, I'm currently working on my next video on literature reviews, and a part of that video will focus on critical literature reviews and the concepts of relevance and significance. Let me explain what I mean here. When conducting a literature review, it's important NOT to include all studies you come across on your topic. Instead, you need to be critical in selecting which studies to include. Take a critical approach and evaluate the relevance and importance of each study to your topic. That should be the criteria for determining whether to include it in your review. Please let me know if I could answer your question :)

Hi Sir, Step 1 and 2 are not so tough. For step 2, we may find theses that similar to our research field. For example, if our research is on mobile payment adoption, we may search theses on online banking adoption to structure our headings and sub-headings. i think that Step 3 and Step 4 are the most difficult. Could you please make more videos on how to conduct these steps like a pro by providing various published examples.
@saeedsharif
@saeedsharif Год назад
Thank you for your suggestion and the example you provided. I understand your point. Literature review is indeed considered one of the most difficult topics to teach. However, I have received feedback from many of my PhD students and emerging researchers who have found my 4-step method highly beneficial in their literature review writing process. Hope it works for you too. Typically, I cover these 4 steps in a half-day workshop, but I have created a video that serves as a summary of the workshop. So, each second of the video contains valuable information, and it's important to fully comprehend every sentence I share. I recommend watching the video multiple times until you have a complete understanding of all the details provided. In the upcoming videos, I will provide more examples and instructions to elaborate on these 4 steps in greater detail. Mastering this video will prepare you for the content covered in those subsequent videos. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need further clarification. 11:11 what is the reason for not using some theories that you don't want to use. Should the "reason(s) for no using" be supported by previous studies?
@saeedsharif
@saeedsharif 11 месяцев назад
Well, it is important to support your statements or arguments with relevant literature. However, this doesn't mean that past studies have discouraged the use of a particular theory. Btw, this advice is more applicable to thesis writing, but it can also be beneficial to address in an article if you choose not to use a widely accepted theory. In such cases, you can refer to the mixed results of past studies that have employed that theory or highlight the limitations associated with it. All of these points can be supported by existing literature. Let me know if that clarify things.

10:44 Highlight the research gaps. Do we only show the gaps in the final sub-heading of the Chapter2LitReview? Should we just highlight the gaps as stated in the Problem Statement in Chapter1 Introduction?
@saeedsharif
@saeedsharif 11 месяцев назад
That's a great question. I will address this topic in my upcoming videos on literature review, but let me explain briefly here. Follow my step-by-step guide on problem statements that I explained in the video for writing your problem statement. That needs to be like what I explained in the problem statement video. For your thesis, consider adding a separate heading in Chapter 2 titled 'Research Gaps.' In this section, you can highlight and discuss the research gaps in detail. I understand that they may seem repetitive, but in this specific section of Chapter 2, you will delve into the gaps more extensively.
@anitalow3628

11:11 How does your work contribute to the body of knowledge. Since we already show the "contributions" in Chapter1, why do we repeat it in Chapter 2? Where do we insert the "contributions" in Chapter2?
@saeedsharif
@saeedsharif 11 месяцев назад
I understand your point. A research thesis is different from industry or consultancy reports. In industry reports, we usually use the MECE (Mutually Exclusive, Collectively Exhaustive) approach to ensure there is no repetition. However, in a thesis, some parts may appear repetitive, but these repetitions serve different purposes in various chapters and sections of your research thesis. It's important to note that copy-pasting content in different sections is not the approach; instead, the content is presented differently for different purposes. Returning to your question, the contributions of the study should be clearly stated in Chapter 1. I recommend creating a heading specifically for this purpose in Chapter 1. In Chapter 2, these contributions provide a lens through which to review the literature. This means that during the critical literature review process, you can use these contributions as a guide to decide which aspects to include in your literature review. Also, you need to structure your literature review in a way that, by the end of reading your work, the reader understands the identified research gaps and how your study aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge.

@saeedsharif 11 месяцев назад
Thank you for the question. I have many examples for that. Let me share one of them here. See this paper: "Naghavi, N., Pahlevan Sharif, S., & Iqbal Hussain, H. B. (2021). The role of national culture in the impact of board gender diversity on firm performance: evidence from a multi-country study. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion: An International Journal, 40(5), 631-650.". In this paper, on page 632, we have highlighted the mixed results of past studies in the paragraph that starts with " Despite the seemingly persuasive arguments, requirement and policies favoring board diversity, the results of empirical studies are, at best, mixed or even downright contradictory." and then in the next paragraph, we explained that the mixed results could be due to the context. We stated that "The results of meta-analysis studies suggest that the effect of board diversity on firm performance depends on the context".
@saeedsharif
@saeedsharif 11 месяцев назад
Another example: See my paper "Sharif, S. P. (2017). Development and psychometric evaluation of the breast size satisfaction scale. International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance, 30(8), 717-727." On page 718, I discussed the mixed results of past studies, and then, I stated that "The mixed findings of previous studies can be due to using different instruments to assess breast size satisfaction/dissatisfaction and also the interaction effect of other variables such as overall body fat and the size of waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) on the participants’ judgments of attractiveness and breast size satisfaction (Furnham et al., 1998)."
