Funny, I am in the midst of a first time playthrough, and your "Have you ever wondered" was my playthrough.. i was worried abut my reputation, so i delayed the thieves guild arch for quite awhile, and so by the time i really explored Riften, I had "accidently" started the thieves guild by helping with the merchants, then found about the guy in the ratway

I didn't know you had to pay for info. iv always sided with the theives guild before i got too far in the story.

There is also different answer if u kill grelod the kind before talk with boy arentino for kill

what if you kill the executioner when he's about to kill roggvir in solitude? can you find roggvir hanging around town?

But you realize you can just ignore asking & walk straight to esberns location

What would happens if you just straight go to esbern, without asking the bartender? Will you know it's esbern is the old guy that lived in the ratway and the thalmor will not chase you down?
