Fairlanes and LTD's are essentially slightly fancier, slightly longer Fairmont Ghia's. If I didn't mention your model (Falcon SR, Classic, etc) these were typically limited run models based on an XT / Futura etc, with additional options included.

In the boot at the very back where the seam welds are can prone to rust if your Falcon is sitting outside in the elements. If parked down hill water will pool up in the boot channel area when it rains. Best to park on level ground or facing up hill if always parked outside. Keep the great content coming Sean 😎

I had a 2004 BA XR6 Turbo and it spent much of its early life at the dealer for warranty work, including bubbling headlight lenses, squealing washer fluid pump, broken hood release lever, faulty door lock actuator, rattling brake pads, vibrating exhaust heat shield and loose steering rack that would creak on hard cornering. But the most serious fault was very common and I'm surprised you didn't mention it - diff whine from 80km/h and above. Ford agreed to replace it with a new one, was without the car for a week, get it back and diff is silent - for about 15k, before the whine started again. To be honest the 4-speed auto and entire drive train on the car was like a tractor - the auto would loudly thump when being put from neutral into 'D' and the shifts were hard and clunky due to excessive slack and play. I still loved the thing because it was wicked fast and had great street credibility, but the entire drive line needs to be looked at by any prospective buyer.

Back in the day I had a brand new manual AU III XR6, replaced it in 2002 with a brand new Auto BA XR6 with Factory sunroof and polished face factory optional alloys - what a fab car at the time. As a kid of the 70’s and 80’s I was team ford at heart .Having said that we had new holdens too :) . We all all got affluenza and now drive posh European cars. I loved when Australia had their very own cars. Great reviews - thanks - cheers from Caloundra

I paid 8000 for my 136000km xr6 a few months ago and I’m already in love with it. Previous owner had both the rear and front brakes upgraded to slotted rotors and pacemaker competition headers. The BTR 4 speed isn’t that bad but the first gear is very tall. If you use the manual control you can bypass that a bit though.

Great video Sean, always love to see the BA :) Couple of points: - Both V8s have issues with spark plugs getting stuck in the heads and have timing chain issues. Aside from that, and well maintained, they're pretty good. - The Barra 220 is similar to the Boss and but has SOHC and 3 valves per cylinder as opposed to DOHC and 4 valves per cylinder. - Many running issues are also resolved by cleaning the throttle body. - BAs generally have the trans cooler just in the radiator, having it on the side of the block happens on the later cars. Both milkshake tho. - I reckon a lot of people will complain you said the BTR is reliable but I have always found them to be very reliable, I have one with nearly 500000k on it and it's just now getting tired. ZF is a great trans tho if it is well maintained.

I have a stock 04 6cyl BA ghia, I fully re-bushed the ass end and front, also replaced ball joints, shocks/struts, added trans cooler, changed a few coils, fixed small leak from power steering pump (common). Rear one piece spoiler is cracked on both boot mounts, the F&R discs were replaced with slotted discs (would not do again) and replaced front wheel bearings and centre tail shaft bearing. Wires in steering column all cut through (bad Ford design)The car has proven to be reliable(200,000 + KMs), maintenance and wear and tear no more than any other car for its age, has a couple of knocks when going over speed humps which I am still trying to find. The worst issue the BA has to fix in my opinion, is the front duct vent shafts breaking, pulling out the whole interior to fix theses is a C*#T!.

Oh yes, is there a way to get into headlights without either removing battery and casing, induction box...or whole front Bumper and grill? Caus I had to change my bulbs few weeks ago,couldn't get hands in there and had to remove bumper, and headlight casing just to change bulbs. Although gave me perfect opportunity to get rid of the sun damage on the headlights while i.had them out. Couldn't believe I had to remove so much (those stupid clip in bumpers) just to change bulbs.

The front air ducts breaking…. My wife came home the other day and said the heater stopped working in her BA XR6. A quick doctor google seemed to point to the air vent rod, what a nightmare. This was about to be the straw that broke the camels back. Then I did some more checking, I don’t think I’ve ever been happy before to see no coolant. The water pump had gone and dumped the lot. I like my BA but it’s never ran long without needing something fixing. I wouldn’t recommend one.

Great video. The Barra engine is legendary and apart from normal maintenance are generally bullet proof they will always get you home. The biggest issues I have in my workshop are transmission issues both auto & manual. These are down to lack of maintenance with either auto transmission cooler failures and or transmission failure just because people don't change the fluid often enough. the fluid then gets brunt causing the transmission slip. I would say change it every 100,000 kms or so to be safe. Manuals can have clutch issues again they only last about 100,000kms. Also LPG conversions need to be checked over as they can cause issues if not done correctly. Most falcons have a reputation for chewing threw front brake disks especially, a good set of after market ones will last longer than the standard ones which are quite weak in my view.

There are removable plastic inspection ports along the sills under the floor pans. If theres no rust, not a bad idea to spray fish oil into the sills just as a preventative measure. Also the firewall by the brake booster and in the same spot on the LHS

All sounds about right mate, though experts will let you know if you missed something! I think its a generation of car where its modern enough for it to be safe and structurally strong, but not full of complex electronics. The aftermarket AND wreckers cater for them very well where you buy something with some miles but in good condition, you don't have to spend too much coin on some preventative and/or high milage maintenance and you end up with something nice and reliable at the end. Case in point, my 2011 Territory with 330kms. A full detail inside and out, gearbox flush, shocks and some front end components and its just nice. For a $4k buy, maybe $1500 in parts installed, I'm bloody laughing.

Another common problem with BA Falcons is the gearbox cable connecting to the transmission can fail cause it's just pressure fit with a silly rubber grommet. I fixed mine with some tie wire and zip ties 😀

Agreed. Have had both the underside and the inner console cable connections both go out on me in just 2 years. Inside console you have to remove all the trim around the shifter to get to it. Better to use nut and bolt to hold and avoid further cable issues as over time the plastic clips just deteriorate with heat

I assumed they were something amazing. Your car is absolutely Immaculate..Im not sure how long you have owned it, but if it was a recent purchase I'll bet it took you quite a long time to find one in such amazing condition. I was fortunate with my XR6 that I have (after owning it for a year now) only found one bit of rust..when I was chasing a short to ground on my demister the other day I removed the back parcel shelf and in the left hand bottom corner there is quite a large hole developing from the seal failing..about the size of a golf ball actually, and bits of metal were flaking off and getting onto the demister plates which led to the DTC. Another great vid..cheers. Maz.

I bought it from my neighbour with 191,000 km who kept the car well maintained . I change the engine oil with Penrite 5w-40 every 5,000 with full Synthetic oil . Its dual fuel LPG/Petrol car . It’s got the good LPG gas system in it ( not the crappy LPG set up in Taxis ) cost $3,600 back in 2009 to have it installed . I could start this car up tomorrow and have all the confidence in the world that it will take me from Sydney to Darwin ( change the engine oil up in Darwin) and back home no problem.

Great vid! Another spot for rust is under the fuel filler and only some cars seemed to suffer really bad rust in the fire wall and around the bonnet hinges, the heater is a big one! If it doesn't work your up for a dash out job. On the XR8 listen for a ticking sound on startup, that'll give you an indication whether the timing chain needs doing, which is an expensive job but super common. Factory LPG is both a blessing and a curse. If your eGas Falcon is having trouble starting and/or is running rough, you might need to drain the converter, and clean the idle jet. You might also have to rebuild the converter at some point. IMO it's probably more worthwhile converting it to petrol once the 10-year inspection is due.

@bigdude101ohyeah Год назад
Also, there are a few interior pieces that are unique to the column shift models, so you might have to modify things to fit. Even the combination switch is different (because it also contains the lights from the gear selector). Australian Ford Forums has been very useful, as they've got a lot of guides and service manuals, Fordmods has a lot of guides too.

Late 80's, early 90's BWM's And Mercedes Benz are like the AU falcons with paint fading and rust. And from my experience with the 90's Audi A3 that car did look great but the build quality was very disappointing for a small Aldi what should had been better then a VW Golf. The car even made my Jeep look very reliable. And Chrysler vehicles aren't very well known for reliability besides the old AMC legendary straight six that my Jeep has which is a good engine if you look after it well. Glove box breaks of. Hi buddy 😊, orwsome job letting us know the full basics on the 2005 xr6. Iam looking into a second hand falcon 4ltr, I came across a good second hand xr6, yellow 💛, a lady owner 180,000 kms, it's been garaged by owner, she's asking $5000, needs attention on 19 years of wear. If I do get this little ripper I will be putting it into restoration from top to bottom inside and out an repaint in Ford gold. Thanks buddy for your information 👍. Fordfanstv4ltr.

I've had Ford Falcons as company cars from AU Series III to BF Series II (until they were replaced with the Ford Ranger PX onwards). They were usually the povo pack. Rust is the big issue in these Falcons & even repairing them later on the rust is a nightmare if not found early. To those who own them, start buying trim & spares now before it's too late. Ford will still have some OEM stuff in it's warehouse but it's running scarce. Start hitting up wreckers & even FB marketplace.

Bought a BA a few years ago with 325000 on it, can't tell.. An XT, was $2000. Runs well and suspension is still comfortable, hear changes are perfect, but obviously 4dpd auto has ridiculous gearing around town...great on highway. It's now up over 350000 and no different to when I bought it, and yes I did thrash it on a few occasions, but still drives the same..but now needs a sump gasket and soon the bushes and new brakes, but it's really almost like a new car to drive (exept no Bluetooth of course).

I have a 2005 Bf ford falcon xt and besides having to replace the front warped brake rotors, having a cracked windshield which I'll be replacing soon and a unfortunately snapped bonnet release cable as the previous owner yanked it a bit too hard (have a new one but haven't installed it yet as it's a slight pain to remove the inner guard and run the cable through), the car has been been smooth and great to drive, I'm on my L's so for me its almost perfect except for the minor inconveniences

When you mentioned the after market turbo back exhaust causing issues makes me wonder if that's what's the issue with my BA Turbo, bought it completely factory, test drove it but was in town so couldn't really test how it went up top, i trailered it home and already had a complete exhaust system for it so got straight into changing it, was a 4inch from back of turbo, catless pipe to a high flow muffler and twins out back, looks and sounded mean but took it for a drive down the open road and soon as it gets higher into rpm under load it starts hesitating sort of makes a farting noise lol and then gets back into it.. have put a new walbro 255 fuel pump in and new genuine coils and plugs still the same issue.. downloaded FORSCAN had no codes but couldn't get a throttle position reading on it, so wondering if its the TPS? is that common to fail and what issues would it cause?

I really loved the BA BFs until I bought a BF Xr6t 6 speed manual. I was always fixing something nearly every week! must of been a Friday car, the only redeeming feature of the car was the paint shockwave ( it had been resprayed under Ford warranty) which I think is probably one of the best colours, when it’s not flaking off!!! I’ll stay with my E series for now.

Talking about the XD range, my brother purchased a mint FC LTD in the early 90's. It was silver with the subtle red pinstripe. Lightl tan-coloured leather seats, moonroof and a 302C. The car was immaculate and cost !6K!! He let me drive it on my P plates and I thought that I was the man, with a car full of mates and an AC/DC cassette in the impressive stereo. I know that it was 'only' a 302 but it still saw 200/kmh. Damn, shut up Tim, I could talk cars all day - every day :)

@MotoringBoxTV
@MotoringBoxTV Год назад
It can happen on AU's, but I don't think they have the same 3-cylinder limp mode. They'll just have rev hang, self acceleration and higher fuel usage. I suppose it could cause it to run slightly rougher at times or make it harder to start though.

My BA Fairmont (bought new in 2003) got rid of the foot rest which my EL Futura had. The foot rest is invaluable for comfort for long drives. My Fairmont has Mercury Silver which was replaced pretty quickly by Lightning Strike which was lighter. Mine is in really good knick... It's been garaged most of its life and its intensive motoring finished in 2007 where most of its life was driven between the south coast and Syndey once a week. I probably had better reliability with my EL but the design of the BA was second to none.

They're a good solid car, I've got a 141k BA XT that's been very reliable. The fuel economy around town is garbage (I've seen 14-15L/100km), but with the amount I drive fuel is still cheaper than a car payment.
@VicariousLord

Something is seriously wrong with that car with that consumption, because that is what mileage I get with my BA XR8 around town. My BA XR6 was getting 11L per average around town. Mind you, both are/were manual, although that still means little difference.

I own a 2003 BA XR6 (4 speed). It turns 20 next year. Bought it 3 or 4 years ago for $2000. Spent near $10k or so fixing every problem it came up with over time of owning it. Currently at 271*** k’s and only a few months ago have started a car instagram for it and started saving money to do up nicely and mostly going for cosmetic cause 1. Going for power is expensive and 2. I don’t think it’s worth chasing power in an ‘03 4 speed BA (unless you changed pretty much the entire car) 😅. But that’s just me 🤷🏻‍♂️.

One thing with B series is to pull the boot trim out and inspect all the body seams- some cars started rusting from inside out (i pumped all the panel joins with fish oil and a Tectyl cavity wax product (name escapes me). Also put anti seize on the steering rack mounting studs- that is what causes the clunking in the front end (rack binds up on the studs). Dont use Ford brake rotors- even now the qaulity is crap. Turbos- use a silicon spray in the boost control solenoid (car will feel sluggish/ slow to build boost when it is gummed up) and clean the turbo oil inline filter once a year (or replace with an Earl's filter) 6 speed manual- use Transmax Z oil to stop the 2nd gear jamming on the 1-2 shift. 6 speed ZF's in the MK2 through to BF MK2 had issues with the 1-2 & 2-3 shift solenoids (not changing down). The aircon drain clogs up real easy- it is up above the gearbox Probably a heap of stuff i have forgetten from my B Series days.

The driver's control pad for the electric windows can just pop out of its spot without warning, true of both BA and BF Falcons. I have a BF wagon currently and previously had a BA wagon. One other grief-causing element is the *Body Control Module* which resides behind the stereo/aircon control, which you're stuck with in BA and BF models, by the way, but the BCM causes all sorts of mischief, wipers - rear wiper comes on when front is engaged, rear reversing lights stay on after engine turned off and car gear set to "Park"(my cars are automatic)..... Another cause of grief is the actuator which operates the central locking - the Doors Open warning comes on intermittently, even when all doors and tailgate are firmly closed....... I'm regretting ever buying the brand! My next car will be a Holden(or second preference, a Toyota).
