Towed a caravan 27,000km around Australia over 8 months in one. Up and down mountain ranges, across dirt, in 45 degree heat. Did not miss a beat. All I had to do was replace the rear half of the exhaust for $220. That’s it. It was super comfortable and used as little as 12L/100km towing a 1500kg caravan. Great car which helped us have a great trouble free adventure I will never forget.

As a taxi driver some time back, I drove the A.U. Falcon before my boss replaced it with a B A wagon. The old A.U. Clocked well over a million kms, although going through three gear boxes. It was re registered and sold, the motor never had the cylinder head removed in its lifetime. You can’t get those ks out of any Holden ,not even a Holden cab.

Serious? AUs still in revenue service? They relaxed the age limit for cabs in Sydney after Uber was legalised yet the oldest cabs I see are BF III wagons. Are memories that short in Sydney at how well the AUIIs handled taxi work? It must be that the workshops don't carry AU parts anymore.

@AussieBill128
@AussieBill128 4 года назад
I bought my Au Falcon just over ten years ago. Prior to buying it I asked several mechanics if there was anything wrong with the car mechanically. They all said no. I needed a new car as my daily driver and thanks to motoring writers and public opinion AU Falcons were being sold cheap. I also had LPG installed making it dual fuel and at that time the government was giving a rebate on cars converted to LPG. I paid just over $6,000.00 for the car and it had about 120,000 ks on the clock. Well I have clocked over 465,000 ks and what has it cost me in repairs other than routine maintenance, one alternator, which I only replaced a couple of months ago. A tank of gas costs me about $40.00 and will get me at least 400 ks. Don't tell me the AU Falcon is a crap car, I'd buy another one tomorrow. Running it on gas gives you a large comfortable car with a small car fuel bill. Go the AU.

Easily one of the best engines ever built by FoMoCo. It's nothing for them to do a 1,000,000+ km. Many years ago I had an AU taxi come into the shop with over 1.4 million on the clock still going strong on the original donk. Let's see an alloytec do that😂

Actually not so bad looking. I like that they used the trusty straight six engine that Ford sold here in US. That engine might have been a good fit for the Ford pickups, like they were before, but with the modernized design used in this car.

Nice report. 😀 I owned a 1999 AU Fairmont wagon for many years. Great machine. Gave it to my son who drove it even further. Then I bought a 2010 Focus 2 L turbo diesel with the wet clutch auto. This car is still going well with my daughter. I replaced that with a 2008 BF Falcon wagon. Still driving it today, excellent vehicle and superior to the AU in most ways - except that the AU seats were better, and the AU steering was better. Let me expand on the steering. The AU had variable ratio hydraulic power steering, the variable ratio being provided by the Bishop technology steering rack. This jewel provided more direct steering as you increased lock, and at straight ahead was a very smooth easy rolling feel, such that cruising on the highway was easy and relaxed. Enter the Focus. 11years on design wise and the steering was wooden and needed more attention than the AU on the highway. Enter the 2008 BF wagon. Steering in this car is similar to the Focus - in their wisdom Ford dropped the variable ratio steering and now I have steering which is wooden, does not roll easily from centre and requires more work on the highway than the AU. I've driven my wife's 3 Commodores, only the last one with electric steering steered better than the AU, and lately I drive a Hyundai i40 (once a week or so for the Red Cross) and the steering on it can be described in the same way as the BF, although it is helped by being lighter. So there you go, more cudos to the mighty AU. As an afterthought, why did Ford fit a TAPE player to the Fairmont AU. At that time nobody used tapes anymore, I wasn't even able to find a tape in the bottom drawer! I had to go to Dick Smith and buy one of those tapes with a 3.5mm jack wire coming out of it to play my music. . . 🙄🙄

I own an Au series 3 falcon. It has 235 000kms on it, and everything works. I look after it, oil every 5000kms, Trans 50000kms. I replaced the ignition system, and injectors and fuel pump with aftermarket, but apart from that it's standard. It has excellent performance, and by locking the torque converter by selecting 3rd for speeds under 80km/hr, I achieve on average 10 litres per 100kms on regular E10. I prefer the single overhead cam straight 6, just more simple. My car seems to be quicker than the BA's.. even though their figures are better for peak power and torque. I can consistently do 0-100kms in high 7 seconds. Standard cam and all.

Nothing wrong with the look of the AU, IMHO. It was the first Falcon I had paid attention to since the XC (yes I'm that old and owned a few). After they toned down the AU Falcon shape they went back to Boring rectangular boxes that hardly differed year after year. Your story should also have made mention of the return of the ozzy made 1 tonner ute in the AU which even made Holden re-enter that market after nearly 2 decades absence.

I also owned a VT and whilst I still prefer the exterior look of the commie the falcon did everything else better. Economy, driving comfort, interior quality (minus the sticky steering wheel) etc etc If I had the room and the means to support a garage of classics and memorable vehicles I'd definitely have an AU on the roster, restored to showroom condition. If you don't intend on keeping yours please make sure it goes to a good home, there's so much life left in it for someone to enjoy.

I bought an AU back in 2009 for a roadtrip - fresh out of highschool and never had anything bigger than a 1.8L before, but decided I needed some horses after our poor Camry died en route to the Nullarbor - overworked in the WA summer. I hit up Gumtree. I viewed an ED falcon for shits, but decided it wouldn't go the distance as the owners informed me that it 'overheats sometimes' while filling the radiator straight from the hose, as I looked on at their bogan mansion (complete with overflowing wheely-bin and sticky barefooted kids who should have been in school at the time). I viewed a suspiciously cheap V8 VS Commodore, with gold spoke rims and a very enthusiastic seller who took us on a thrash around the block to show us 'she fuckin' goes alright', but decided it was probably just too thrashed-out and far too thirsty. I viewed an AU in a Kalgoorlie dealership with epilepsy. All of the electronics were truly fucked; lights flashing on and off randomly, doors locking and unlocking themselves non-stop from the moment you turn the key, rough body and a slightly concerning 330,000km on the clock and passed up on it, but something stuck... _she's not pretty but I reckon she'd go the distance_ I settled on an ex-realestate agent's car. A sporty red 2000 AU II Falcon with spoiler and alloy rims, single small scratch on the door handle and 220,000km on the clock. $3200, cash in hand, rego transfer papers signed off on the boot lid, done deal. She was a mighty AU falcon which would go on to do 6,000km across Australia in the next 8 weeks - from cruising at 140kph on the Nullarbor to the shaky unsealed back roads of coastal South Australia, from the Great Ocean Road and rolling hills of inland Victoria to the windy mountain roads of Kosciuszko, the stop-start traffic in Sydney and all the way up to Cairns. She never missed a beat! She was smooth and quiet, sitting effortlessly on 110 even with an arse full of tents, tools, baggage and 3 adults. Need to overtake some grey nomad with a Maui going up-hill? She'd roar to life and leave them in the rearview mirror. Never overheated and surprisingly wasn't even that thirsty. The AU falcon was the perfect Australian touring car. I fell in love. I ended up regretfully selling her (for more than I paid), but went on to buy another AU and 2 BF Falcons since then. I became a sensible-6-cylinder-overhead-cam torque connoisseur in an economical-4-cylinder man's world.
