Some clubs allegedly offered to participate, such as Bayern, Borussia and PSG, strongly rejected the initiative. There have been accusations of immorality, killing the spirit of football, elitism and betrayal.
The idea has evolved in the meantime, there have been discussions and consultations, including with UEFA authorities. On December 21, 2023, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that the sanctions UEFA had threatened clubs with were unfounded, and the topic came alive in the media. On the same day, moreover, a new plan was presented: the competition this time was to consist of 64 teams divided into 3 divisions. On February 2, 2024, FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta said that at least 32 teams were willing to participate.
