I posted a photo of my binding library on Instagram two weeks ago and by popular demand, here is how I made it...and several other libraries that I have grown over the years. And funny, it's just as important to see the misses as well as the successes. And our machines have so many stitches but they look so different stitched out on fabric. I hope that you start your own libraries. Enjoy

It is SO OBVIOUS you have the professional organizing background.. the information you share is so valuable to my logic programmer brain. Things like this are great to do when you’re not feeling the mojo. Touching all the fabric and thread can help spark ideas. Thank you!

Months and months after using a new machine for just straight stitching, today I decided to learn the decorative stitches. A few little scraps with pleasing lines of stitches... and I remembered, WAIT, Karen has already told me how to do this systematically. I re-watched the video and realized there's so much good advice here... more than just creating a stitch library. Karen, you're the best.

Great ideas Karen. Whenever I bought a new sewing machine ( overlocker , embroidery or quilting) I always read instructions from cover to cover and get to know it by sewing out everything shown. New quilting templates have their own sampler sandwich with different width bindings on the corners. So good to have reference to past projects that we can't always recall instantly🤣♥️🇦🇺

Thank you Karen for an inspirational and informative tutorial. While watching the video I thought about my pages of doodling when I’m trying to create a FMQ design for a project. I’m still a novice so I sometimes need to “play” a bit to get my technique and courage up, and I can’t seem to toss them when I’m done. I could include those pages as part of my quilting library next to a stack of mini quilt swatches to practice on.

I stitched my quilt samples into a quilt using the flip and stitch method. It is right there on the wall, visible and inspiring!

When I bought my new Viking machine several years ago I did samples of all the fancy stitches to have them as a reference. Even though it took a bit of time it was fun and it told me which ones I would most likely want to use in future projects.

My Bernina 350 came with three mornings of lessons that included a notebook. As we went along, working on various stitches, we were invited to slide the sample into a sleeve that also held the explanation page. My recent purchase of a different Bernina came with only 3 hours of "lessons" that left me only slightly informed about the machine's possibilities. Good for you, Cindy!!!

This is such a great idea and I know it should be on the top of my list. I’m loving the one that you do with all the decorative stitches and different threads, after that it’s like wow that a lot of work. This reminds me of my vast collection of recipes somehow ends up in a unorganized mess. Obviously I need help 😩. Thanks for your ideas and inspiration 👍❤️😊

Bravo, Karen!! This is a fantastic and inspirational video! I'm going to be starting my own library because your ideas are just wonderful. There have been quilts I've made where I still regret not noting what batting I've used or how I did that certain quilting meander. I wish I had done this sooner, but definitely glad you've given me such great ideas for going forward. Thanks, Quilt Momma!!

Thanks Karen for all of the great suggestions. I like the samples of the various binding sizes. I think if I take the time to try those out I will actually use more variety of sizes. Thanks too for the information about the "This is how you quilt it" series.

I love this video. I’d be quite tempted to make all blocks the same size for all different aspects and use a QAYG method. That way I could combine my library blocks into a sewing room display quilt.

I have made and kept samples of all the stitches that my machine makes. It's the first thing I do when I get a new machine, which is infrequent, because I tend to get higher-end machines with lots of stitches--love using those. It's a way to get to know the machine and also then you know how much variation can be done with all the stitches using fabric that's easy to stitch on like plain cotton. It also helps to be prepared for the new user lessons that the dealer often offers. I had not considered keeping a library of different batting or bindings but what a great idea. I haven't done a lot of quilting but perhaps by doing this, I'll not feel so intimidated. I like piecing the tops like most everyone but I really enjoy the quilting part. I discovered that when my local quilt and Bernina shop was open and held quarterly quilt-a-thons for making little quilts for Project Linus. (How I miss that!) The batting was already selected so I never thought about it and the Linus sessions didn't use bindings but used the pillow case method to complete the quilt quickly. I see I have some fun 'work' to do.

As a web designer your ideas are GREAT! I can put page layouts, photo layouts, backgrounds, fonts, navigations and more in a space on my website. It's nice to collect all this, so you don't have to remember how you did everything. Keep up the good work Karen. We Karens have to stick together.

I loved this video! Thank you. I've been planning to make a sampler (library) of the decorative stitches on my machine, and will start one before July, as part of my 100 Days Project. Your video gave me more ideas on how to create these samplers, as well as other libraries I'd like to have/make. Thank you. :) By the way, I've incorporated so much of what you teach in my day to day that it feels like I've been taught by you for years. Instead, it's been just a month or so, when I first heard about your channel on Kate's Last Homely House's channel! Thank you :)

I love this video! I love all your videos! I have grown in my confidence and skills since I started watching your videos a year ago. I also am quilting every day, which I am so happy about. I took a class recently that had me doing a lot of what you said in this video. But you added so much more, and I love it. I especially loved the Thread color library, making the different color fabric strips and seeing how the thread color interacts with the other fabric colors. Genius! 💡I learn something new to do or try in every video you make, even when I think I've got this. Thank you for your videos. Have fun on your cruise and safe travels!

So inspirational ❤ I’m working on a collaborative Polaroid crumb quilt. The crumb blocks were made by youth in an after school program where I taught crumb quilting as an art lesson. Each crumb block is labeled with their names embroidered as well. I have an idea to make library samples of quilting with these crumb blocks; varying on background fabrics, thread colors, machine/hand quilting, quilting designs, etc… Like a consultation before I do anything on the final quilt. Thanks for the video Karen!

Because you are both creative and organized, I am requesting that you offer a video about marking quilts. Not the where, the how. I have purchased marking pens over the years. Some you spray water on to get them out of the fabric; some you iron. Does the packaging tell you which is which? Rarely. Also, I don't mark too much, so the pens end up dry before I use them the third time. What a waste of money!!!!! I've seen chalk packs that are supposed to be patted on a template, but I'm not convinced that method would last long enough for me to get to X section of the quilt. I am doing more actual quilting now (instead of just piecing), and I'd like to try marking lines that aren't stitch-in-the-ditch or echo quilting. I know I could draw and cut out my own templates, but I don't have a good tool for the marking. Can you help?

Hi Karen, you always come up with some fabulous ideas, my problem is space, I basically don’t have any to store a library. I juggle my quilting space and my work space in my livingroom and struggle to store my stash. It’s something I will keep in mind for the future Thank you 😊

Some of what you made are to big to fit in a notebook. I had to leave my sewing file in Memphis, Tennessee, when I left; because, there was no place to pack it. I have needed it many times; but, I went to my sewing books and worked it out each time. That sewing notebook (file) would have saved me a lot of time. What you showed us is are wonderful ideas. Thank you.
