I downloaded this years ago when it was available as a 32bit plugin. Seems that now it's 64bit only. As I recall, the notes stated it was an emulation of Genelec speakers, not Yamaha. Still, it is useful as a crosstalk simulator.

From what Im researching....for NS10s to be viable...you still need something like KRK Rocket 10s or 12s for Low end monitoring as well, I use Alesis M1 Actives MK2s and I think they are a better choice because its an "All in One Flat Freqency" Solution and thats what you want when your mixing down.....my monitors with ATH40s will Smoke a pair of NS10s as far as Acuracy......because you need another "High End" Monitor to go with it for your Lows....thats not a good idea to me.....youll get further, using Adam 7s or Some Alesis Actives....

the stereo field shrink feels exaggerated, almost like the speakers are only 60 degrees apart. Feels drastic vs my monitors which retain quite a bit more stereo image (they are 90 degrees apart from my head)

It’s ALL about the midrange. That’s where every important sound lives and balancing them successfully is more important than either end, which can be enhanced to some degree by EQ after the fact. EQ can do nothing to resolve a bad mix in the midrange. I never used NS10s but always did a great majority of my mix on high- and low-restrained speakers. Once you’ve mastered the balance in the midrange, reintroducing the rest of the sound almost sucks! That is the realization about where the music really lives.

The problem is they don't emulate the changes in cone integrity. That's why they were good for checking mixes on. If you had too much bass in a frequency they can reproduce they would distort in the low mids... and this is the same all-around the frequencies. Its a test to see where you song could make speakers fall apart and sound bad. You get audiophile headphones that show the truth and ones that make everything sound good. You get speajers the same. When mixing, your job is to make sure you song doesn't fuck up as many places as possible. Anything worse than a NS10's isn't really worth worrying about. Although, once you've used something like this long enough, you will not need it once you know these subtle things you need to listen out for. I tend to keep my test speakers now just to explain the reason for decisions in a mix to someone sitting in on a mix.
@roman_styx

Yes, getting used to your monitor setup is crucial, ones you know your system, your mixes get better and better.
@earlsfield

Had NS10s back in the 90s. Dude. These speakers are all about mids, and if you are mixing anything sub - related, good luck using NS10s only, if you don't have a subwoofer or another pair of monitors that you sort you low end with. Also, you cant just chuck NS10 on cans and "mix on ns 10s" - the fact they are near field monitors means just that, you should use them near field, to balance those harsh mids. This way you just get super harsh binaural mode. I would strongly suggest either buying proper ns10s as your second monitors, or just buy a good pair of studio monitors and cans and forget NS10. Yes, learning to mix with them helped me extremely, yes if your mix sounds good on them you are probably ok, but i dont think a free plugin can make you hear the mix better. 2.59 NS10s cannot sound like this in low end, period. This has been tempered with.
@roman_styx
@roman_styx 7 месяцев назад
This plugin helps me a lot in balancing mixes even if doesn't sound like true NS10s. This gives that mid focus as well as binaural effect. I know that it helps, I personally have genelecs as my near field, but I also work a lot in headphones, and even if I mix some track only in headphones, I sounds the same as my usual mix.
@earlsfield
@earlsfield 7 месяцев назад
@@roman_styx no its fine whatever works for you mate, I mix a lot on cans, but have 2 pairs of focal and adam. I am just contesting the premise this is 100% ns10 sound because it isn’t, easy to test even with what you are playing over youtube:)

You don’t need an NS-10 simulation plugin, just add an eq on your stereo buss, hi pass up to 100hz and bell boost at 3khz by 30db 😂
@assshakerstudios549

Umm, IDK about that plugin. It's kinda like Audified Mixchecker, among many others. They can be good if you don't have external speakers to use. But just as a double checker(you should have 3 total, 2 sets of speakers, and headphones...minimum). As far as headphone plugins that you 100% should mix into(like top down mixing, but take off at the end), it would be GoodHertz Canopener! Which simulates the cross-feed that speakers normally do. Guy from ScanPro Audio has some good info on it that has panned out nicely for me, and was recommended by peers. ScanPro Audio-The BEST Studio MIXING Headphones + Plugins - The Pro Audio Podcast check on youtube. Now I've got a set of NS10MS's so don't really need this plugin. I can tell with 100% certainty that little things like switching cables(length and quality-silver is best) can change your mix. However fixing your room(if your using any speakers)can make a drastic impact. Although it's usually a very expensive endeavor!

That's an absolute NO GO. I do everything on the same professional BeyerDynamic studio headphones without any adjustment to how they sound on my ears: I use them for composing, production, mixing and mastering. And there is a very solid reason why I do it this way: because in this way ( and only in this way) my ears and brain are completely adapted to the characteristics of these headphones and very important: this one ONLY. This means that I can never be confused that what I am hearing is actually not what I'm hearing or might sound slightly different when listened to on other speakers or systems. It's the consistency that I use to only take the same headphones in the same flat setting on every occasion, which makes this possible. As soon as I would go and interfere with that principle (for instance: with the NS10 plugin), things will get confusing and end up bad in the whole mixing procedure. I only listen to other systems or speakers AFTER the whole process on headphones with flat setting is done. And I do that afterwards to make comparisons and decide wether there might be a little tweaking necessary or not. (Usually not).

And this is now my in retirement,, Professional Life's Mission. To get this change enacted. So everybody is hearing things. The way they should. So much better. Because this is the only way your brain wants to accept, electronically reproduced sound. When you get the timing right. Because when your speakers are sucking. The timing factors are all helter-skelter gobbledygook all over your room. And it's really making for horrific monitoring difficulties. So as to get everybody to blame, their gear, their speakers, their acoustics. Above all, their lousy acoustics. So you need all sorts of gobbledygook all over your walls! And you need to get better speakers. And then the better speakers need to be replaced with yet better speakers. And then you need Dolby ATMOS. To get Totally Immersive Audio! NO YOU DO NOT! While it might be true. Your room most definitely has, Lousy Acoustics. Because it's your converted bedroom. Or it's your converted basement or den or spare bedroom. And that's all, really lousy acoustics. Because you have no cubic volume. For frequencies to properly, propagate within your room. And gobbledygook on your walls. Isn't going to change your cubic volume. Let's be clear about that. And so Proper Acoustics. Can only be had in rooms. With enough cubic volume for a 30 Hz waveform to stretch its legs I mean waves. And you ain't got that and never will. And so your acoustics shall remain, Crap. And all the gobbledygook on your walls will make no difference. It'll just improve the diffusion. Of all of your waves directed in the wrong direction. That are all helter-skelter all over your room. Canceling in midair all over the place. And you think you have your speakers connected correctly. Because you follow the wiring diagrams explicitly. And you did. You did good. The factory didn't. This issue all comes down to DC Theory 101. That all the engineers get right. Until they get to the output. When they go the wrong way. The plus on the amplifier. Does not get connected to the plus on your loudspeaker. No. Instead. The plus on your amplifier. Gets connected to the negative on your loudspeaker. And the plus on your loudspeaker. Gets connected to the negative of your audio power amplifier output. Because that's the only way a lightbulb will light. In a flashlight that requires 2 batteries. That's DC Theory 101. So then why when you get to the output of the amplifier. Would you connect the plus terminal of the amplifier. To the plus terminal on the speaker? That's backwards! DC current will not flow that way. Oh but this is AC? That's right. And AC has an, Absolute Polarity to it of negative or positive. Oh whoops? Yes it does. And everybody got it backwards. Except for JBL. And I think this is very funny. And I laugh over it. But it's really not funny. Because everybody with the college degrees got this wrong. As you may have also well surmised here. I possess no, Electrical Engineering College Degree. Nope. I am just a Fabulous Electronic Audio Technician. And be that as it may. While I am not always 100% right. I'm also never wrong. In my over 50+ year career in Pro Audio at the Top of the Heap of Engineering Talent. As I've worked for some of the most legendary and best. American Pro Audio and Broadcast Equipment Manufacturers. And then I went to work for a major Television & Radio Network back in 1981. A little place called NBC. Owned by RCA. I was hired by RCA. I was paid by RCA to work for NBC. At their News Hub in Washington DC. And I had a sweet independent contract worked out with them. After I resigned as a full-time engineer. After 10 years. And then worked 10 years as an independent contractor. And but one of the ways. I eventually ended up with 2 of the 1970 designed, delivered in, 1972, 36 input, custom Rupert Neve, original, Audio Consoles. Much better than any of the Recording Studio consoles they made. As that is what Rupert Neve told me. Over hours and days of conversations I had with him. Since the purchase of my first one in 1996. From NBC. And my second one in 2008. Oh my Lord! 72 inputs worth. In total for both. Oh my God! I never thought I would own anything like these. I loved using them, sure.. But even used and decrepit. They would be out of my meager price range. But I was a much loved, NBC Engineer. And I know strings were pulled by at least one of my engineering managers. As I had done some really cool things for NBC through the years. And dear Sully loved working with me and me with him. He was the best! Not like other company guys. He was definitely into the Audio. And he knew. He had the Hottest Audio Engineer in the NBC Network Chain of Engineers. And he would be correct. I knew I was also. Because you see also. Back in 1984. American Television went Stereo! For the first time. And I was the only one consulted by NBC News. How to Engineer the News in Stereo. And so you will find today. In the dawn of 2024. The Network TV News. From all over the world. Is actually presented in Mono.. Like it always has been. Except for the music in the opening and closing of the show. And the bumper musics going into and out of the commercial breaks. That is in stereo. The news otherwise is not in stereo. Because I told them. We should not do the news in stereo. And my reasons seemed sound and legit to them. And so then. All of the other networks followed my lead.. Because NBC-TV News, Leads the Way. For most others around the world and in the USA. And so even CBS, ABC, PBS, Fox,, CBC, BBC, Deutsche Welle of Germany, France-24, Japan's NHK. Still do their news in Mono. Because of me. From 1984 LOL! Because I made sense. Why we should not do the news in stereo. It's distracting. It takes away from what is being said. And the desired message to be told. Without distractions of stereophonic stuff. That distracts the mind. Along with other reasons of intelligibility. Speech audio processing. Consonant enhancement. Because you don't want the switchboard lighting up with phone calls. Because somebody misinterpreted a consonant. And so on and so forth. Because I'm an expert with the human speaking voice. I've recorded a lot of narratives and National Commercials. When I previously worked for other top recording studios and advertising agencies on a national level. The big time commercials. Not your local car dealer or beauty parlor,, advertiser. And those have to sound Very Right. And then I ended up doing the news on a worldwide level. And historic news broadcasts. I never expected to be doing ever. But found I was one of the best at that stuff. But I was really all about the music. And good spoken word stuff is music to my ears when it sounds great. RemyRAD

Added the link, thanks! I heard about Deespeaker from a studio buddy who was on the hunt for a Yamaha NS-10 alternative for mixing on headphones. While the plugin docs don't scream NS-10, I did some snooping. Found PDFs with speaker responses dt7v1i9vyp3mf.cloudfront.net/assetlibrary/n/ns10m.pdf , and guess what? Deespeaker's output, checked with Plugin Doctor, lines up pretty darn well - even a bit flatter in the mids than the original, which is a real plus. They probably keep it hush-hush on brands for legal reasons - licensing headaches, you know I've had hands-on with NS-10s in the studio, and I gotta say, this plugin is a spot-on sidekick for catching similar mix quirks. Super handy, in my opinion!
