Yeah, i was blamed by my friend when I said 'was' is for informal and 'were' is for formal. She strongly believes that 'were' is the most most correct. 😢

In American English, you would hardly ever hear anyone say "If I was you"....we tend to always say "If I were you" because this is a phrase. But, in other situations you can see people using was instead of were. like "If it was summer, we could go to the beach". We cannot generalize. In formal situations like a job interview for instance I would say "were" sounds more appropriate. I myself use were most of the times. Even Beyoncee sings If I were a boy.

American English is kinda messed up.
@buschhuhn9197
@buschhuhn9197 Год назад
I presume the "were" is there because of "I" (first person singular). So in case of "summer", which is third person singular, "was" is correct, or?
@buschhuhn9197
@buschhuhn9197 Год назад
Sorry, I meant to say because of the "You", which is second person singular... My bad!
@apdorafa-rafaelalmeida7159
@apdorafa-rafaelalmeida7159 Год назад
@@buschhuhn9197 actually, the right grammar is to use "were" with all pronouns when we have a conditional sentence. But, in everyday language, people just end up using "was".

I was expecting at least a mention of the past subjunctive and its use in counterfactual situations. Even though the subjunctive in general seems to be optional in English nowadays. Sentences like "If I were you" or "I wish I were rich" actually refer to the present and describe something that is untrue (I am not you, I am not rich) Although rare, it is possible to have a sentence with a conditional that refers to the past, even in the first person. For example: If I was wrong about what I said (when we spoke yesterday), then I apologize. Here it would be wrong to use "If I were". We are speaking about an event in the past, the validity of which we are unsure of. Similar sentences in the third person are slightly more common. If he was home when you rung the bell, why didn't he open the door?

@ajs11201
@ajs11201 2 года назад
At 7:22, you're not quite right. The was/were connundrum is another example of your type 1 vs type 2 conditional. If something *could* be possible, then use "was." If something could never be possible, then use "were." If I *were* you (because I can never be you). If I *was* there (I could have been there, but wasn't). To illustrate further: If I *was* in Italy, but if I *were* on Mars.
