YT keeps deleting my comment so I’m going to try to split it up. Apologies for the multiple comments. I was saying that you were right about the meaning of the first part of the song, but I think he’s trying to convince himself too. He’s always been pretty self-aware, even when he’s still doing what he does.

In another song he says “this is nothing to relate to” as much as he talks about sex and drugs it never felt, to me anyway, that he was glorifying it. There’s always an ode to the dark sides of that lifestyle.
