Like I suggested for the cow flap... How about automating the oil temp control by thermostatically controlling the relative door position based on, for example, a program table of the known heat loss coefficient value of the incoming air temp vs air flow (volume) vs oil temp. Or perhaps a simpler, less sophisticated controller that simply sets the door in a few positions based on oil temp. Not unlike the concept of an automotive coolant thermostat..
@bencoder
@bencoder 4 года назад
Huh, so that's why I have to wait for the oil temperature to rise. I probably should have asked, but it's always just been "make sure oil temperature is in that green range" and I never questioned it.
@vancamjr
@vancamjr 4 года назад
Oil temperature will be “set it and forget it” such that the worm drive is actuated to drive automatically? Or is this manually operated where Mike must continuously adjust the oil cooler air flow? 💪
@MikePatey
@MikePatey 4 года назад
Great comment, thanks. 👍🤠 In my filming I thought I was already talking to much and may lose some people 😴 💤 often I think I may give to much boring detail. I’ll go into more on this topic in a future video. I am using a bypass thermostat similar to the vermatherm I used in Draco. the variable door drive allows me to restrict air and reduce cooling air drag and increase efficiency in cruise. The thermal bypass loop I’m using does a great job on auto temp control. The standard setting on my variable drive cooler doors will be full open for startup and climb. This eliminates all pilot workload. I have excess available heat rejection in the coolers in that position and the bypass i have is set at 187 degrees so I have no workload and warmer temps are controlled automatically. Yet, in cruise flight when I’m killing time I can close the doors to a preset mechanical limit (not aloud to fully be closed) this limits cooling air drag and increases speed and efficiency. At this point I can see the temps creep above the thermal limit meaning thermal bypass is full Open to the coolers and I can stop the doors there. Also the doors will never close all the way in case of mechanical failure of the door drive unit. I will set the doors at a minimum heat rejection of 200 HP so that worst case if my doors were set to max available closed in cruise they will never be shut. If the system failed in this position I would fly near normal cruise speed of a standard cub and have plenty of cooling. If the door system failed at the other end (fully open) I would have full range of power and the thermal bypass will keep the temps warm and the only loss would be either top speed or a minor fuel efficiency loss due to extra drag. Sorry for such a worded response, I hope I didn’t put you to sleep and that it made sense how I worded this. I’ll try and give more details in the future without putting anyone to sleep 😴 ... cheers 👍🤠

@MikePatey
@MikePatey 4 года назад
Scissors95 😂 your correct and you can’t even get to zero. It’s just how close you can get to zero from current atmosphere. At my shop it’s 25.3 and so I’m lucky with that pump to anywhere close to zero. I mentioned more about my comment in joking about the gauge problem but I have help with editing and most gets cut. I was poking fun that my vacuum pump is so good it can achieve the impossible and go twice atmosphere.
@kBIT01
@kBIT01 4 года назад

Most aircraft already have one, called a vernatherm. But they still seem to let oil flow to the cooler a little in my experience. Putting a door on the oil cooler is best, and it may allow the cooler to get warm enough so oil doesn’t congeal in the cooler on cold days. Maybe he could put an automatic function on the servo motor, then it can adjust itself without him trying to chase it!
