How do you build a custom aircraft fuel tank that doesn't leak? Lots of experience and tricks to help make sure that Scrappy has many years of leak free wing tanks. Also and update on Scrappy's wing spar pieces that you can order.

Yeah I don't think any of us would mind a few hours a week. there is not a TV show on that could hang with this guy. I mean he takes his time not only to do things right but to tach us to do them right, these car building shows show them starting a weld and 2 minutes latter the entire chassis is welded up. At least here it is very detailed and you can truly learn. I am building a hot rod and a lot will relate. I even using his zip ties with the rubber coating to protect wiring. very good product. This many is no dummy and his work ethic is second to none.

@@MikePatey it's guys like you that make it all worth while. When I signed up, I was an immature 18 year old. Yeah, I knew I might be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice, but most people who sign up don't know that. Now, 45 years later, it's painfully clear that we're enlisting the wrong people, that it's the older guys who should be enlisting, since we have some concept of what it's all about. But, like you, I am so thankful for those young people who are willing to give it all, to lay it on the line. But, it's people like you who honor those who serve that really brings home WHY we serve our country, and what it means to be patriotic. YOU, and those like you, are the reason we are proud to serve, and are thankful that there are people like you worth being there for.

Former 747 assembly mechanic here. Your explanation of tolerance for countersinking rivets is very good. It was 45 years ago but I believe our standard tolerance for flush rivets was + .001 to .002 / - .000. In other words, below flush was out of tolerance and grounds for a rejection and special repair for the reasons you mention. Also depending on the thickness of the skin, if countersunk too deep it creates a knife edge on the skin which can be a point of stress induction into the rivet potentially causing it to fail before service life was complete.
@mattpalmer8918
@mattpalmer8918 2 года назад
Current 767 assembly mechanic on the wing line here. Every rivet we install must be microshaved to match flushness of the skin, whether it's composite or aluminum. Were you body structures or wing structures?
@mytmousemalibu
@mytmousemalibu 2 года назад
@@mattpalmer8918 Was going to say, just a touch proud of flush and hit it with a microshaver for perfect flush rivets! Nothing looks worse on a clean plane than a bunch of smoking rivets. More importantly they are a failure mode.
@4stringmanagmaildcom
@4stringmanagmaildcom 2 года назад
@@mattpalmer8918 Yep, I remember microshaving but we had very few if any that needed it. I helped build the wing to body fairing when it was still done in house. Former aircraft engineer here. Yes to all, and in fact I never designed for a countersink more than 2/3 through, and that last 1/3 or more was always at a chosen length or more. The idea was to completely avoid even the chance of a knife edge, given expected variability in actual csk depth in production.

Mike Patey's nobility, generosity, acceptance of different people, insane work ethic, flat-out genius is all of it, inspiring. It inspires me to be more neighborly, more open to others and other's viewpoints and beliefs. He builds community, fellowship and comradery through his example. My patriotism has taken a huge hit over the past 5 years, especially over the last year, through a violent riot/attempted insurrection, and since, as large groups of people and some politicians have organized to undermine our democracy and our democratic process at the state and federal levels. Our 2020 election was saved from being subverted by local volunteers and officials who, no matter what side of the aisle they were on, made sure the election was fair and accurate. However..... when watching the flag/award portion, I was sobbing. I do love our country and while I'm a grandmother, I would defend my neighbors and fellow citizens with my life if need be. Mike Patey, his brother Mark and their family (including Ron) are amazing and they motivate me to be a better human being. So, thank you, all of you. (hugs)

I completely agree that I am very interested in Draco X, even more so than this build. However, the more I learn as I watch the Scrappy build, the more I am in love with this little hot rod as well! It's funny-in the years that I have followed the Patey family (and the rest of the Flying Cowboys) I have often daydreamed of owning my own bushplane. However, at my age and circumstance, that probably will never happen. I spent so much of the early part of my life chasing big checks (crazy hours, living away from my young boys, etc.) and blowing the money on God knows what, that I am content to earn a good living and enjoy the time I have left with my kids. The foresight, attention to detail, creativity, engineering, and craftsmanship that we all watch and enjoy lead me to two conclusions; I have to go see these guys and planes in Oshkosh and I have to get a ride in a bush plane one day!

@gildedbear5355

@@kelsondigital6183 that is my understanding as well. after all, the stars don't go "on the left" they go "next to the pole" and if that pole is on a vehicle in motion then the stripes will be to the rear, no matter which direction it's viewed from. (unless it's REALLY windy 8)
