I've been telling people the same thing. These people act like they don't remember that. None of those champions at the time would fight Floyd. They all claimed he wasn't ready. I don't agree with a lot of what they are saying, but it's either your intentionally misinterpreting their words or you are very slow. They are saying that Floyd waited for the "right time" to get advantage. Floyd watched until they showed signs of weakness and then made the fight. Athletes are affected by age differently so they go out of their primes at different rates. Floyd's style allowed him to stay longer in his prime than Manny did, that's why they are saying he waited for Manny to get old. Though I disagree with a lot of these, some of the arguments have a debatable point.

It's different. Floyd learned to not rely on his power punching ability. He had to wait for the other boxer to deteriorate then he'll fight them. They are saying because of their fighting styles, Floyd was in his prime for longer and other fighters were affected by age more. That is true, but it just shows all the more how brilliant Floyd is. He did not started with a very defensive style, but he changed into it as he aged to minimize the damage to his body and so that he can rely more on his accumulated experience and ring IQ rather than athleticism which fades with age. It's the other fighters' fault that they could not do the same.

I respect the sniper and the door kicker. Meaning, I love fighters who will accept any challenge. Swing like crazy and go out on their shield. The door kicking type of fighter. But, I also respect the carefully calculated fighter who uses everything at his disposal to give him the best advantage. Ppl hated on GSP in the UFC. And his career kind of mimics FMJ. GSP was a kickboxer but once he got to the top top dogs he had to start relying more on his wrestling. Similar to how FMJ had to become more defensive later in his career. Somewhat due to hand issues but largely because he was simply facing the top guys. Maidana dang near beat him, Mannie was close. Mosley rocked FMJ like we've never seen. The De La Hoya fight was the only fight that was bs. The Canelo fight was just a result of age difference. It had to happen when it happened and unfortunately it was before Canelo completely matured as a fighter.

And you shouldn't fight everyone you can, because there's far more bums than there are top competition in boxing. That's why when you look at the resume of a guy like Cesar Chavez, he fought about 45 times before even stepping in there with a ranked fighter. Also, as a CHAMPION (yes, champion), he was fighting guys in their debut and with only one win. Warriors don't take on cab drivers when there is a lot of great talent available.

As he (and any other boxer moves up in weight) it’s rare that their power moves up into the heavier classes.
